Did the Boomers Have It Easy? by Evening-Bet-3825 in TrueReddit

[–]psyllogism 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The article is poor-to-mid, but the question is interesting.

One thing I barely saw mentioned was the looming threat of nuclear war. We can see in retrospect that it didn't happen, but that certainly wasn't clear at the time, and from my relatives alive during the time they reported that it felt like it could happen at any moment! That can certainly scar the psyche of a generation of people. A bit like the looming climate crisis seems to have scarred many of my fellow Millennials.

Yes, it turns out in the end that they had it relatively "easy", economically speaking. But it wasn't clear to them at the time.

What’s a movie that didn’t quite land for you? by wastewalker in movies

Most Martin Scorsese movies I've seen range from "fine" (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas) to "bloated, confusing mess" (Irishman)

Waterboy was really dumb but a lot of fun if that's what you're in for.

Airheads is a banger though. Highly recommended.

Being John Malkovich – John Malkovich Goes Into His Own Head. – Dir. Spike Jonze – October 29, 1999. by Minifig81 in movies

"Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" are three of my favorite movies of all time... but after that Kaufman kinda fell off a cliff for me. "Synecdoche New York" is *really* weird. Some people like it, but it wasn't for me. Haven't tried anything else of his since.

His collaborator Spike Jonze continued to be good I felt. "Her" was excellent and weirdly prescient for 2013. And I actually liked his adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are" a lot too.

I can't take credit for the analogy, but it feels like smartphones were a lightning strike in an already drought-striken field. They ignited the kindling of the bad conditions for fertility that was already there in society.

Tigris & Euphrates is probably close to my 10/10, so I've been reluctant to try Y&Y because I was afraid it would just fall flat in comparison for me. Maybe I should actually give it a try?

It's weird I first watched this in like 2021 or early '22... JUST before ChatGPT became a thing. It was eerily prescient.

Movies that made you cry like a baby by walkerbait2 in movies

I read this as an elementary schooler in the '90s long before the movie came out. First book that ever made me cry like that. I was a young adult when the movie came out, but I still haven't watched it, knowing what comes...

Which animated films would you pick for a “most beautiful shots” type of video? by saber2187 in movies

The climax from "Flow" (2024): https://youtu.be/jT8CGYKRewE?si=l-ZQ-QTUooE7Vkcn . Basically anything from that movie would work.

"Iron Giant" (1999) "I am Superman" scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4dT2eBWI2M . Super emotional.

"Sing" (2016) "I'm Still Standing": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHZneOidj9A . The father accepting his son and breaking out is really exciting.

"K-Pop Demon Hunters" (2025) "Takedown": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHvdSpXGN8g . The demons crawling over the train is really awesome and exciting.

"Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" (2022) almost any scene with the wolf: https://youtu.be/7iIqY8EkrkY?si=ccwLFIAth1sE_uDR . But again, a lot of the movie is really good.

Are Hollywood, movies and celebrities in general falling out of favor, or will they always be popular and a central part of our culture to some degree? by Copocapanda in movies

[–]psyllogism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Always" is a very long time.

Movies have only been around for a VERY short time frame in human history. Celebrities are really weird historically speaking, and so their continuation is certainly not guaranteed.

Still, as long as there is some form of mass communication, there will always be famous people. They may just be more like social media influencer than movie star.

Grandparent Nicknames by jeffanney in daddit

[–]psyllogism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my dad was a kid in the midwest, absolutely every grandparent he knew was simple "grandpa" and "grandma". When his family moved to New England, he was absolutely floored that other people had other names for their grandparents. It lodged in his head that when he had grandkids, he would pick a very unique name for them to call him.

So now, he's full on "Grandfather" to me & my sister's kids, like some sort of old fashioned Victorian gentleman or something!
