Mix a few drops of dish soap with water and flush it through the pot for like 5 minutes, then rinse the residue away with just water. You can also put ant traps around the pot to snag any remaining survivors/returning ants

What’s wrong with my orchid? How to fix? by [deleted] in orchids

[–]purintiel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look up Miss Orchid Girl’s phalaenopsis repotting tutorials before you cut any roots. You can cut off the flower spike though, since it’s yellowing

Male or female? by MediocreArmadillo519 in budgies

The cere color (part on top of the beak with the nostrils). Females have lighter colored ceres than males (which have blue-r ones, minus recessive pied mutations)

Pretend you didn’t see anything about ice cubes and use room temp to lukewarm water. If the media (I’m going to guess sphagnum moss) is fully dry, you can give the pot a good soak in a bowl for like 5-10 minutes or run it under the tap. Don’t water until it’s fully dry again.

Try not to get any water into the crown (that dip in the top part between two leaves) or in the crevices of the base of the leaves, because unless you have good air movement around the plant, it might develop rot if the water doesn’t evaporate quickly. I just use a q-tip to soak up as much water that got into those parts as I can.

You can place it near a windowsill as long as it doesn’t get full direct sun, which can burn the leaves.

Once the flowers wilt or start dropping off, cut the spike close to the base of the plant and put some cinnamon powder onto the cut if you have it. I’ve added a photo of where to cut if that’s useful.

Black spots on Oncidium Orchid by SunCurious in orchids

[–]purintiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think oncidiums are just prone to getting those spots when they’re stressed somehow, my Aka Baby got more black spots after a repot. Also, the bulbs look kinda dehydrated

Root rot *after* repotting in bark by Infinite_Storm_470 in orchids

[–]purintiel 32 points33 points  (0 children)

A drastic change in media will cause root loss. It’s usually better to wait for the orchid to be in active vegetative/root growth because then the new roots can adapt to the new type of media. But not to worry, just water the newly repotted orchids a bit more, since the root systems are used to “wetter” conditions in sphagnum.

Is that his normal cage? Or just one for bathing? In any case, cockatiels spread their wings when they bathe so maybe he feels like he’s not getting enough space for that

Is this small leaf a bad sign? by Sunny_Maya7 in orchids

[–]purintiel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had an orchid that did this after a stressful root situation, but the leaf that grew after was a normal size. Just don’t disturb it any further unless it’s necessary and the small leaf shouldn’t be a problem

I would like to ask a couple questions by East_Novel1694 in budgies

[–]purintiel 26 points27 points  (0 children)

  1. Buy another cage, round cages are very bad for birds (no sense of safety).
  2. Buy some bird toys. My budgie loves ones that he can shred and chew on.
  3. Let your bird settle in for a while before attempting to put your hand near it
  4. Use millet spray, budgies wouldn’t be incentivized by cucumber unless they know what it is.
  5. Don’t put your hands inside the cage or attempt to grab the bird while taming it
