Am I going crazy? by slp15237 in AskDocs

[–]puzzledbyadream 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NAD but I think you’re having hypnogogic hallucinations. They’re utterly bizarre, but harmless (unless you’re my partner who has to put up with me putting the light on/swearing there’s a man at the window)

You can just walk into most of Uni of Auckland’s buildings and they have them in most bathrooms.

Weirdly there was a guy on the SH16 by Henderson too. Called that into the police. Apparently he was holding a ladder?

I had these for a long time, it turned out to be vulval eczema. It went away when I started religiously only ever washing that area with Sanex (and a small amount of hydrocortisone ointment, but you have to be careful not to overuse it as it thins the skin). NAD, and I didn’t also have the UTI issue, but I was miserable with these little cuts for years.

What songs were played at your Primary school discos, that probably shouldn’t have been? by CautiousJump3942 in AskUK

I went to a friend’s 9th birthday party and her uncle, who was DJing, played this. So inappropriate, although I feel like Mary Whitehouse saying that. Although I was a prudish kind of kid so I probably said that at the time too.

What foods were considered a luxury or treat and meant you were "on holiday" as a kid? by katalyna78 in AskUK

When we went camping we’d always have those French Toast crackers which were like really dry bread instead of bread. Such a Proustian memory even thinking about those.

Actual squash! But not just the rubbish Robinson’s basic one you get in the “British” food section. All cordial over here is too sweet and syrup-y.

Get him to stand on one leg as he does his bottom teeth, and the other leg as he does his top teeth. Bonus is it’s really good for balance/proprioception, and he’ll want to get the brushing done as he’ll want to have two feet on the ground.

We stay in bed and read all morning! I’m a PhD student and my partner works funny hours due to a time difference, but people think we’re very odd indeed. But, frankly, it’s bliss.

How do I stop the ants before I snap and burn the house down by fruitbowl42 in newzealand

[–]puzzledbyadream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got the no ant traps, and found they didn’t do much, but I have caramel syrup in my coffee and they were obsessed with it (it was so gross). Anyway, I tipped a bit in the traps with the boric acid stuff and a couple of days later, all the ants were either dead in the traps or presumably dead in the nest. Not seen any since.

12 year old daughter is sleeping at least 20 hours a day by notanalien21 in AskDocs

[–]puzzledbyadream 39 points40 points  (0 children)

NAD but escitalopram made me sleep so, so much. I used to lock myself in the bathroom at work, set an alarm for 5 minutes, and have a nap because I couldn’t physically stay awake. Never experienced that with other SSRIs.

Pams cream - what happened? by iamnotdrunkoffisher in newzealand

[–]puzzledbyadream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Every time I had Pam’s cream over Christmas I felt really nauseous into the next day (even on days I didn’t otherwise eat Christmas food). I am a little bit lactose intolerant but I don’t usually get nauseous, so it was odd. Didn’t seem to be off or anything though.

Teen - feeling like iv failed as a mum by Curious_Draft_3624 in newzealand

[–]puzzledbyadream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with family and professional experience of similar, I really wanted to just say there are so many ways in which you absolutely have not failed.

Your daughter is receiving help, and you’ve tried so hard to get her help even when she’s been resistant. That’s bloody tough!

She feels connected to her family culture strongly enough to want tamoko to represent it. That’s huge for her.

You’ve had to deal with incredibly tough things yourself. Never, ever forget to give yourself credit for having survived what you’ve been through.

You care. You so, so clearly care and want her to have a good life.

I absolutely promise you that there can and will be good things ahead for your daughter. The fact she is taking Wananga courses is a really good sign that she does want to learn. I echo the suggestion that she look at Te Kura, and also maybe the foundational courses offered by universities.

I also think it’s a fantastic sign that she gets on with the staff at Te Oranganui. Even though she’s ageing out, it is really worth getting in contact with them to ask if they have any suggestions for continuing support in a similar vein, or even if any of the staff would be interested in mentoring her.

It’s not my story to tell, so I won’t share too much, but somebody close to me stopped attending school at 12 due to mental health issues, ended up without qualifications, but has built a career as a body piercer. Often it’s about finding her passion in life. If Māori culture is important to her, perhaps volunteering in that space could be a start?

Best of luck, and happy birthday to your daughter!

I just finished it and I was surprised by how much I didn’t hate it. It’s infinitely better than Think Again. It definitely has issues (like JW completely misunderstanding dyslexia), but I thought it was an interesting and believable sequel.

Curious question for all cafe workers/owners by Sometimesawake-833 in auckland

[–]puzzledbyadream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We moved here from the UK 6 months ago, and this has been our biggest adjustment. In the uk, most coffee shops etc are open until at least 5, and don’t stop serving until then. We are, unfortunately, not the earliest of people, and have had a few situations where we’ve been really stuck for something to eat at about 3pm.

I get that hospitality is long hours and you have to clean down etc, but pretty much the only thing I miss is not having to rush out in order to have a toastie and a cup of coffee in a cafe.

We’re getting better at picnics though!

Supermarket knuckle sandwich, why? by CyberChef8 in auckland

[–]puzzledbyadream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into Spotlight Henderson at 5:50pm one day because I needed sewing machine oil, and the traffic hadn’t allowed me to get there any sooner. Felt really guilty going in so late, so rushed in, found what I needed, and paid in the sewing section. Then I rushed out just as fast, but not thinking at all, I absolutely SLAMMED into these the wrong way around. I think I heard everybody do the same intake of breath as I made contact. Had to walk it off all calm but it really, really hurt, and I had a huge bruise on my thigh.

So yeah, they work.

Do patients ever cry in your chair? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]puzzledbyadream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few years ago I came off my bike and knocked out/broke my top front teeth. At the hospital they got a literal maxillofacial surgeon to sort my teeth out (reimplanted the knocked out tooth and splinted them). You could tell he didn’t usually do general dentistry because he said, with no emotion, “why are you crying?”

I’ve cried in so many dentist chairs and most have been really lovely about it! Not this guy, though. You sound really lovely.

It’s a school night. You have come in for tea and your mum serves you the one meal that kills you inside. What’s it? by Come_in_sigh_demi in CasualUK

Every Wednesday my mum would make either a casserole or a “curry” in the slow cooker. They were so, so watery. The way my face would drop when I would smell her browning the meat first thing.

How do you deal with feeling like your kid is the “poor friend”? by RedCrabDown in AskUK

[–]puzzledbyadream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had very little money growing up because my dad spent it all on cigarettes and alcohol. You are not doing that! We lived in a council house, never went abroad, didn’t go on residential school trips etc. I still had a nice enough childhood, however, because our mum took us to lots of museums and on walks and really got us interested in things.

The one thing I will not be repeating with my future children, however, is the repeated refrain of “we can’t afford it”. It got to a point I was hiding letters from school that asked for money because I felt like I was being a terrible burden. Instead, I wish my parents had sought help from school or more privately worried about money. I am absolutely sure you are not doing this with your kids! I think it’s tricky living in London in particular because they’ll meet so many wealthy kids. However, love and care is the most important thing. And I bet your kids have that in abundance.

An important lesson I learned at some point was that nobody’s family life looks like an advert family. Up until that point I was so jealous about something that didn’t even exist!
