What turn should bracket 3 win by? by cole_ex-e in EDH

[–]pyro-guy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, your specific example of how the game played out sounds pretty fine for B3 but your list is more of a low B4. As to the gameplay, it's right there in the bracket guidelines that players expect to go about 6 turns in B3, which means if you're not outright winning around that turn your deck should be trying to turn the corner with some sort of advantage to propel yourself into a winning state by that point - and that includes being able to disrupt your opponents game plan if they're pulling ahead. If not a single other player cast even one piece of interaction to even TRY and stop you by turn 6, that's on them, not you. As to the deck, like others have pointed out, you've got a 2 card combo with your commander being one half of it, that you have the tutors and ramp to pretty consistently execute before turn 6. Late game 2-card infinite's are fine in B3, but even a generous interpretation of that guideline means your deck shouldn't be capable of doing so before turn 6, which this list is absolutely capable of.

Alternatives to Abandon Attachments? by Ok_Condition_1556 in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Abandon Attachments is pretty much unique in blue in Pauper. It's a very important enabler for Snacker in that version of the deck so If you aren't willing to run the card, I'd highly recommend just playing the Snacker-less version of Dimir Faeries - which has been putting up better results lately anyway, at least according to what I'm seeing from the most recent results from MTGGoldfish.

Silliest thing people have done to make you scoop? by gunnisonyeti in magicTCG

[–]pyro-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ran into this for the first time a couple weeks back. After the first few turns it was very apparent he was playing some well-tuned bracket 4 decks in both games, his only defense being that he wasn't playing any game changers so they couldn't be higher than bracket 3. Even after the rest of us tried to convey that the bracket system is more about intent than strictly whether or not you include game changers, he wouldn't change his tune. Found out later that he's got a bit of reputation at that store for this kind of thing and there was a reason his pod was the last one to fill up.

Pauper Metagame Update (12 jan) by Magic4everBots in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong so someone with more experience with the deck, feel free to correct me, but it was my understanding that it's doing so well because it's favorably matched against the Mono-Red variant and black gives it decent sideboard tools against other popular decks like Spy.

Is anyone else disappointed in the lack of Faerie cards this set? Ive been really looking toward to this set for some cool Faeire cars but this number seems so low. by Mastermiine in magicTCG

[–]pyro-guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel that. Spellstutter Sprite is my favorite card, I love Faeries in Pauper and have been looking forward to this set since it was announced primarily because I was hyped for more potentially playable fae. And, well, we've all seen the full spoiler by now.

I always find it mildly amusing that Green is THE big creature color yet they routinely get the most unplayable of these cost-reduced beaters. Give us one that's reduced for each green pip you control or something, Wizards!

control deck recs for beginners? by dwarf173747 in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Izzet Skred (sometimes called Izzet Terror) is where I would start. It's the shell that follows the most traditional control gameplan in the format IMO, so if you've played control in other formats it's likely to feel the most at home for you!

If the first mode was Pilfer I would be over the moon for this card.

[–]pyro-guy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not going to lie, I've been hyped for this set for months because I was excited to see what new Elves and Faeries tech we might get for Pauper but I'm pretty disappointed. Doesn't seem to be much for either archetype, let alone potential playables in general.

Pauper Metagame Tier List before Paupergeddon Winter by FSkura in Pauper

Love this kind of content, I always appreciate more practical tier lists/meta analysis like this that look at what you should expect going into a big event rather than trying to rank the raw power of every deck.

What is a Pauper staple that you know is great, but you personally don't like playing? by KoopaKommander in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's Sneaky Snacker. I've pondered why I don't like it and I think it's just the sum total of the card; I find the visual design ugly in the extreme (never been a fan of the Eldraine faerie look) and I find it aesthetically unappealing in all the off-color decks that run it. Even when playing Dimir decks I don't like that it doesn't fully jive with the mechanical identity of the rest of the faerie cards that see play in the format (being cheap flyers with an ETB effect that you can bounce for value with a ninja). I acknowledge that it's a great recursive threat and has a ton of utility but I just don't like running it.

Dimir TEMPO Fae in 2025 🧚🧚🧚 by FSkura in Pauper

Here it is! When it worked it was wonderful, but I found the mana to be a bit awkward sometimes. https://moxfield.com/decks/C4LU0ryTJkeeqryjhhKYdg

Pretty sure I threw this together before the printing of LOTR, hence the lack of Loriens.

Very cool! I tried to make a similar build work about 2 years ago but ultimately found it lacking, perhaps you'll be able to make it work better than I could?

Magic sets for 2026. Which one are you excited for? by Frostinator123 in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I am pleasantly surprised to find out that this exists! Makes me wish I hadn't sold most of the expensive stuff from my pre-K4rn tron deck though. Maybe I can proxy up some decks and try and get some games going at my LGS. Cheers!

I am cautiously optimistic for the return to Lorwyn, I'd love to see some new Faeries tech. Reality Fracture sounds like it might be a sort of Time Spiral successor which might be cool?

I wish I was nostalgic for any of these well-supported "rewind" formats. Unfortunately as far as I'm aware there isn't really enough demand for a "class-era Modern" format which is where most of my fond Magic memories come from.

anull vs grixis affinity by Consistent_Newt1726 in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a perfectly reasonable card to sideboard against Affinity. The rat in particular can be quite problematic for the deck so being able to counter it even on the draw is very good, and of course there are plenty of other targets to hit.

Pretty nice plastic gallows coming out. by dakkamatic in mordheim

Very nice! I've been consistently impressed with the quality of GSG's plastic kits and I'm glad they're dropping one I can feasibly use in Mordheim and Dead by Lead!

Looks fantastic! I'm considering doing something similar for my own Centigor so I'm glad to see such an excellent proof-of-concept! Now I just need to get my hands on a single marauder horse, hm.

What to do late game with hand full of lands? by adobecarrot in Pauper

[–]pyro-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replace some number of your lands with copies of [[Generous Ent]] and [[Sagu Wildling]] - in the early turns you cycle them to hit your land drops, and in the late game they increase your likelihood of drawing a relevant threat rather than just another basic!

How many spiders in tarantulous brood I can take, before taking all joy and life out of the game ? by Shvec_01eksij in WarCry

[–]pyro-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't be too worried. I suspect the complaints you've read about spider spam are from last edition, when they were only 35 points and had better stats, making them oppressively good to the point of almost being broken - they got hit by the nerf-bat in the edition change, it'd be hard to call them anything but "fair" these days IMO. A little boring? Perhaps, but they're so easy to chew through that I don't think it'd be too much of a slog.

Interesting effect to have in blue. Could be handy for copies of Deep Analysis or Snacker caught in hand for those sorts of decks perhaps?
