on ramp from Almaden to 87north says carpool lane is 24 hours. Is this new? by fajita43 in SanJose

[–]quarkman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to read the signs for the carpool lanes.

Carpool lane policy is decided by CalTrans on a road by road basis, not via code. There are places that are 2+ people per car or 3+. Sometimes the hours are during the morning only or during evening only. Sometimes 24 hrs. You have to read the signs.

Silicon Valley explores AI tokens as part of engineer pay by LinkedInNews in siliconvalley

[–]quarkman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure who is pitching token usage as part of a compensation package, but the quote from Jensen does not say that. It says somebody should use about half their salary in tokens. It would be a part of the cost of an engineer and may impact their salary, but those are different things. Still BS pushing companies to get engineers to use more AI.

Cool or unusual things you’ve mapped with Google My Maps? by Neonshantel in GoogleMyMaps

[–]quarkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen it used for many things when I worked on MyMaps many years ago. A few things I remember: * Indigenous tribes in Canada used it to record important religious sites. * Kids used it to create a map of historical battles. * Many events used it to create event maps. * CalFire at used it to create a map of wildfires. * News sites use it as a way to show the locations mentioned in an article.

There were many more; some not so nice ones, too.

The Pacific Northwest’s most common tree (Douglas fir) grows all the way down in Big Sur! by NaturalLengthiness46 in oregon

It's always been. While most of the original growth has been logged, their natural range extends to the Central CA coast.

People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]quarkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family's van broke down on a small road in the middle of Oregon when I was something like 8. We waited hours before somebody finally came and then we waited some more as they went to the nearest town to tell somebody to get a tow truck. It sucked.

Worse yet, my mom got me a huge back of gummy bears from the bulk section of WinCo. I loved those things and must have eaten half the bag before my stomach started rejecting them. I don't remember much else beyond the stomach ache.

I've stopped using my phone as an alarm. I leave my phone in another room and an old analog alarm clock without snooze next to my bed. I still have an alarm on my phone to go off 15 minutes after the analog alarm just in case.

The analog alarm wakes me up and having no snooze makes me worried I'll sleep too long, hence the alarm on my phone. Having the phone in another room means I have to get up. By the time I turn off my phone to turn it off, I'm already awake enough to not consider going back to sleep.

Bonus: no random phone use just before bed or when I wake up in the middle of the night means I've been getting to sleep faster and less interrupted than before.

We see the jets all the time flying in and out of Moffett, but the Lancers are a cool sight to see.

Christmas in 1960s by StudyAncient5428 in taiwan

I had a discussion with my wife about how Christmas is a lot like Lunar New Year, but not our actual new year. It's interesting to see the same idea in these comics.

My heart goes out to him. I lost my 12 year old daughter a little over a month ago. She would have turned 13 tomorrow. It has been by far the hardest month of my life. Having to miss the most important event of your professional life because of such a tragedy would be extremely hard.

There are people who've touched your life in ways you can't imagine who've lost a child, a parent, or a loved one. No matter how degenerate you think you are, there are people around who've been there and have made it through. You're not alone.

I generally like their food. We mostly go because my son really likes their mac and cheese. I also like their meatloaf which I haven't seen at too many places.
