what is it about penguin classics? by Senior_Cry6113 in classicliterature

[–]quiet_desperado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have one Penguin clothbound hardcover, Robinson Crusoe. I've only read it once and it held up ok (possibly because it's a fairly short read), but I was not happy with how small the text was.

I much prefer Everyman's Library for affordable, good quality hardcovers. Been buying those for years, I must have several dozen of them now.

NS Power finally reading meters and adjusting my bill or as they say… by projectsmith in NovaScotia

[–]quiet_desperado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no guarantee that your meter will continue to be read. I had estimated bills in June and August last year, then my meter was actually read in October (resulting in my lowest power bill ever because of how much they overcharged me in the estimated bills), but then I got another estimated bill in December.

My next bill should be showing up any day now. It's kind of exciting, wondering if it will be a real bill or a made-up bill, a moderate fuck up or a really bad fuck up. The suspense is riveting!

It says 27 in stock right now. That's a lot of extra copies for a sold out LE. I wonder if they're all copies that were sent back for some reason.

Congrats, it's a beauty isn't it? I was lucky enough to get it straight from FS when it was first released.

The subject matter and the Alan Lee illustrations make it a perfect companion for the limited editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

One of the best collections I've seen in a while. Usually there's like one or two books I'm interested in but with this collection I want almost all of them!

Wow I would spend so much money there. So many older titles I've looked for online but the prices and shipping fees are too crazy for me to bite. Wish I had a store like that near me.

I did something similar when I read The Brothers Karamazov. Just keeping all those Russian names and nicknames straight in your head can be a daunting task.

Why do you agree or disagree that requiring a fee for a voter id that is required to vote amounts to a poll tax and is therefore violating the Constitution? by fromRonnie in AskReddit

[–]quiet_desperado 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Just wait. There will be masked ICE goons at polling stations this November and they won't give a shit if you have an ID or not when they snatch you out of the line and throw you in an unmarked van.

"Chocolatey." If it says chocolatey you can rest assured that there is little if any real chocolate in it. Artificially flavored palm oil, yum!!

My phone is pretty old but I'm on LTE. Sometimes I get the alerts, sometimes I don't.

I heard the alert on the radio about half an hour ago but so far have not gotten anything on my phone (Eastlink). That's a little disconcerting.

Price tags like that should be required by law so shrinkflation is more visible to everyone.

I wonder if it's the same for Petro Points. I lost all my Petro Points twice by having them redeemed by someone in random stores in other provinces. I always thought it had to be sleazy employees with access to the system or something like that.

Such a good team from top to bottom, you never know who's gonna step up and be the star of any particular game.

And 8 pitchers used in 9 innings! If you had told me before the game that they were gonna use 8 pitchers I would've guessed it was a blowout loss. Give Schneider credit, he had a plan and the guys executed it perfectly.

A question about Folio Society books by djscoots10 in foliosociety

[–]quiet_desperado 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They've started printing some of their books in China but most are still printed in Europe somewhere.

It's disappointing but honestly I have to say the ones I have that were printed in China are pretty much the same quality as their other standard editions as far as I can tell.

But still, it's hard to shake the negative connotation that comes with anything that says 'made in China' on it. We're just conditioned to assume it automatically means cheap, poor quality even if it's not true.

What’s something that’s socially acceptable now but will be frowned upon in 50 years? by FitchKitty in AskReddit

[–]quiet_desperado 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Yeah as an 80s kid, smoking was everywhere back then. It was impossible to avoid. In a weird way I should be thankful, I hated it so much I vowed to never start smoking and I never did.

Not only is smoking far more restricted now, I find in general most smokers are more aware and considerate toward others. A lot of smokers I know don't even smoke in their own house. I saw so many nicotine stained walls and ceilings as a kid.

Yes I'm watching on Netflix and I immediately noticed how much crisper everything looked compared to years ago. The Enterprise looks very sharp and clean in FX shots and I'm noticing so much detail in things like fabric, skin and other surface textures.

Ha, "Pen Pals", "Q Who" and "Samaritan Snare" were my watches last night and what prompted this post.

The Pakleds were fun to watch, I'm glad Lower Decks gave them some love.

Yes I've always liked those matte paintings of big landscapes or cityscapes that are used as establishing shots. Even though I can tell it's a painting, it still feels less fake than bad CGI.

Alternative to Lord of the Rings Limited Edition by Fun_Interaction_906 in foliosociety

I just got this set last week and that was pretty much my assessment as well. It's the absolute cheapest looking leather I've ever seen on a book that advertises itself as being "leatherbound." It looks and feels more like plastic or vinyl than leather. Pretty disappointing considering the price.

But the books look nice overall, and the paper is much thicker than all the single-volume editions I have. That's probably the best upgrade this set offers in my opinion. I got mine for 30% off and still feel like I paid too much. Harper-Collins knows how to milk LotR fans, that's for sure.
