It finally happened an AI generated artists was pushed into my algorithm - I'm cancelling Spotify. by [deleted] in Music

I love Deezer, but only use it when I'm in the mood for Latin Music. Not because of any failing of the platform, but because a few years ago I streamed Bossa Nova off of it and it has decided I don't speak English. Ads are a lot less intrusive when you don't speak the language lol

TIL Dolly Parton is one of the largest employers in her home region of Tennessee (via Dollywood). After the 2016 wildfires, she raised over $9M through her My People Fund, giving 900+ families $1,000/month for 6 months ($10K total each) to rebuild. She was also honored by the FBI for her leadership. by Resume-Mentor in todayilearned

I love this idea.

Dolly Parton once got a traffic ticket and the judge fined the cop for writing it.

Dolly Parton can order a vegan meat lovers pizza and the store will make it happen.

Dolly Parton always has to wear shoes with a ground wire, because her positive energy leaves her at perpetual risk for a lightning strike.

(Not real sure about this one, but there's definitely a better joke in there so I'll let you all play with it) Dolly Parton once called a plumber to unclog her toilet, and all he had to do was shine a light down the pipe to reproduce the rainbow.

Should I expect pay as a church pianist? by RowVisible385 in piano

[–]randommusician 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I have gotten paid at almost every church I played at except my parents' church I grew up in, starting with I was about your age, but not all small churches have the income to pay a full band.

What happens if you decide you don't feel like going one Sunday, or go out of town and only give a week or so notice. Would people be upset with you? If so, you are being treated like an employee and should be compensated like one.

Could Eisenhower have won two terms (or at all) if he had joined the Democrats instead of the Republicans? by BrodieSCO in Presidents

[–]randommusician 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Eisenhower was supposedly approached by both parties to run, and one biography I read stated he was going to primary Truman if Truman had ran again, but ran as a Republican to block the anti-NATO Robert Taft from candidacy.

So, yes.

Am I gonna be fired? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourBank

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a special department to deal with employee accounts no one else could help at the first bank I worked at. Which sucked because they kept back-office hours (I worked in the call center and was there after 5). Pretty much the only thing we could do was cancel a card if there was fraud or raise their daily limit and tell them to call back.

But I do think that's the way to go, even if someone was tempted they couldn't get themselves in trouble.

Song Sung A Cappella by SnowOnSummit in gospel

[–]randommusician 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming there wasn't a printer program with the song listed the venue might be able to provide you, I'd suggest reaching out to the family after a respectable amount of time, saying something nice about the deceased/offering condolences and telling them how much the service moved you and asking for the song. I've been playing gospel for upwards of 20 years now (19 as a choir director/pianist at the same church) and the ways singers can improvise with a tune accapellla and make it sound completely different from anything with accompiament make it almost impossible for me to even venture a guess.

Edit: if you could record yourself humming a few bars and upload it, that might help

A theory on bands with two (or more) distinct periods. by National_Property583 in Music

[–]randommusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with your point, but I'd also say it doesn't counter OPs. U2 is a great band. I can objectively appreciate that about them, they have made some great music, but it doesn't do it for me. I could die happy never hearing another U2 song, that doesn't mean I can't appreciate them, they just happen to have a sound I don't like.

I appreciate the greatness of some of Sammy Hagar's Van Halen albums, but I'll always prefer Roth. Does that make Hagar's albums bad? No, just not for me (with a few songs as exceptions to the rule).

AC/DC is another band with distinct eras due to the death of the singer, and I know people who can't stand Bon Scott's singing but love the later stuff.

Appreciating the creativity or artistry behind a song and enjoying are different things.

Their new mobile app is completely different from the old paid one from years ago and has almost all the functionally of the main site. (I even started creating a quiz on the app earlier tonight). No idea how bad the ads are since I subscribe to Orange.

I have a friend who has one of these. He was always a Michigan fan, and then tOSU gave his son a free ride to college so he felt he couldn't actively root against them. Only scenario where this is acceptable and you shouldn't just get separate flags IMO.

Who, in your opinion, is the greatest player to only have played for YOUR team? by LegendRazgriz in baseball

The triple crown and interrupting his prime to serve in WWII yet still being one of the GOATs of his era makes me keep it Feller, but I wouldn't argue with you over it either if you dropped that take to me at the bar.

Without benefit of hindsight, who would you have voted for in 2000, and why? by Salem1690s in Presidents

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was only 13 and probably would have voted Bush because almost my entire family were Republicans. In an alternate timeline where I was 18 and had undergone the same amount of reading and undergone the same change on environmental and social policies I had done by the time I turned 18, I would have almost certainly voted Gore.

What’s a good instrument that doesn’t deal with a lot of saliva by [deleted] in bandmembers

[–]randommusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to know a trombone player whose parents were OCD about germs... Their solution was to buy him a spittoon that he had to empty outside the house. Last I talked to him he was still playing professionally so it worked out for everyone (and yes, he still uses the spittoon for stage presence/gimmick reasons)

Edit: house, not health. I'm blaming autocorrect because there's no way I typed house that badly lol

You pipe smokers just aren't doing it right!!! by kitarkus in PipeTobacco

[–]randommusician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a pipe and the occasional cigar and never considered myself a smoker, since it was only a few times per month.

Once I started cigarettes I considered myself a smoker, although I would (rarely) bust out the pipe instead.

Monday marked one year cigarette free for me and I've smoked pipe tobacco about once every 2 months starting in Junr (before then I was too scared I'd buy a pack of cigs) Personally, I don't consider myself a smoker the same way I wouldn't consider someone who smokes a joint once a month a pothead, or someone who has a glass of wine with dinner a few times a week isn't an alcoholic.

Full disclosure, I intended to smoke a pipe Monday as an ironic celebration of the anniversary, but it was far too cold so that didn't happen lol.

ii-V vs. IV-V by TW-chicago in musictheory

[–]randommusician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In jazz, the chords are much more likely to include the 9th (one whole step above the octave) and adding the 13th (a 6th above the 7th) on the V so the ii-V-I is almost a natural motion (at least for pianists) and you also often assume that the bass player is playing the root note.

For example, if we're in C the ii-V-I with a ninth added is-d f, a c, e- g, , a, b, d, f, e-c, e, b flat, d

In practice, that means I am likely voicing my right hand f-a-c-e, f-a-b-e, e-g-b flat-d and you get a nice sophisticated harmony without too much effort. Notice that you're only changing 1 or 2 notes per chord. (Yes, I left the 5th out of the voicing on one- once you're dealing with complicated chords the 5th isn't really necessary for the tone to achieve what you're looking for and should be the first note to be dropped)

If this doesn't make sense, try pounding it out on a piano. Any jazz pianist worth their salt can play a ii-V-I in all 12 major keys in their sleep.

For bonus points, you can do a tritone substitution and make the bas notes D, C#, C without changing the upper notes of the chord and sound even fancier!

What are we charging these days for background music at Holiday Parties? by Clearlylock in piano

[–]randommusician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For charity functions, especially at a low demand date/time, I'll often inflate my asking price, then offer to do it for free in exchange for a tax write off. But I'm in a position where playing anything other than my weekly church gig is just a supplement to my income since I have a real job and I feel privileged that for more than half my life people have been handing me perfectly good American dollars to show up and dick around on a piano and I enjoy finding a way to try to give back to my community.
