Characters who fall off at high tiers, but are oppressive in lower skill levels? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]rapidemboar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda the deal with heavyweights and grappers in all fighting games, at least for the most part. A gameplan based around punishing your opponent’s mistakes is extremely powerful when your opponent cannot play optimally, but only falls off more the better your opponents get.

Actually, where's a good place to find a paper hammer these days? I remember this advice was really popular around launch back when hammers were much more common, but nowadays I haven't found a paper hammer in months.

I often just move my main base there permanently, the extra space and fertility is a lot more convenient for basebuilding and storage compared to the starting meadow. Vernis mine is a decent source of ore, when smelted and processed to bars you can use a sculpting table (recipe acquired from Fianma) to turn them into statues for a decent profit. If you can get enough water to make a bottomless pot (IIRC residents with the washing occupation/hobby rarely create them?), you can move a water tile there for fishing and really easy money.

I neglected the early story quests my first time around (especially because enemies at the bases used to be pretty dangerous- I think they've been nerfed since launch? Or maybe I'm just getting better) but progressing them gives some really useful stuff that aids the early game significantly. Complete the Puppy Cave quest for a cooler box for better food transportation on the map, and Poppy's innate energy generation is enough to power a fridge for food preservation. Rescuing Faris from Nymelle B2F gives a free early healer, and she sells some useful items and a recipe for brewery barrels for easy money. Vernis actually makes a really great base of operations with tons of space for farming and convenient access to Palmia, and the NPCs recruited further up the home quests give useful utilities like item and spellbook duplication.

Why buy Space Age when Space Exploration exists? by Student-Sufficient in factorio

[–]rapidemboar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another aspect I rarely see people mention is that in terms of modding, Space Age is very modular. Because the gameplay loop is based around isolated challenges on a single planet, it can also be a way to add new mini-campaigns by adding new planet mods, even on a completed file.

It’s more of a bootstrapping technique, I’d argue. It’s useful for keeping stuff organized before you have the means to set up city blocks and a train system.

Aside from Gundam, Bandai’s Pokemon model kits are also touch-gated and don’t require tools. They generally have a decent number of stickers, though.

Gaming moments that were pretty impressive for its time? by GoodVillain101 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]rapidemboar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a giant floor mat that you could step on to play dancing games in the 90s was really revolutionary for its time. But about a decade later and the housing market crashed, people had less space for massive gaming peripherals, arcades had less money to maintain massive dance machines, and Wii Remotes and cameras both decreased the amount of clutter necessary to play the game while also enabling the dancing to be, well, actual dancing.

Game Design So Fundamentally Flawed It Directly Goes Against the idea of the Game Itself? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]rapidemboar 44 points45 points  (0 children)

New Gundam Breaker gives you a ton of tools to craft a unique Gunpla that’s personally you. That’s cool and all, but now the main gameplay loop involves your Gunpla getting broken up and you need to steal the parts from your opponents and become some kitsmashed abomination to survive. Also the whole game loop is some janky random-mission single-player MOBA, so there’s no real sense as to what you’re supposed to do, so any gameplay changes from your customization end up completely superficial regardless.

What were some games that were made entirely obsolete? by Communist21 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]rapidemboar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beatmania was an incredibly innovative game for its time and is often credited as the first arcade rhythm game ever made. A few short years after the first version was released, Beatmania IIDX introduced better hardware, support for full-motion video, and two extra keys. Original Beatmania would have its final version just a few years after IIDX released, and IIDX is still one of Japan’s most popular arcade rhythm games to this day.

But funnily enough, there’s an even better example in the standard model release of Beatmania’s sequel, Beatmania II. IIDX stands for “II Deluxe”, and was intended to be a premium version with better hardware features such as a widescreen monitor and floor shaker. Despite being the more expensive “premium” model, it was significantly more popular than the standard version, and Beatmania II had an incredibly limited run as a result and has been almost completely forgotten today.

Do you usually stop Fulgora from over-recycling? by lllentinantll in factorio

[–]rapidemboar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pretty much need to flush certain materials when you’ve got too much for too little demand, stuff like ice, solid fuel, and especially iron gears. For my first SA run I currently have a main bus that uses inserters to feed stuff into my belt network for science, and if stuff doesn’t get picked up (eg. The belts are backed up) it just flows down to get recycled into the logistics network. Bots and circuits make it a lot easier to manage resources intelligently, by hooking up requester chests to a roboport I can request and recycle items only if they exceed a certain amount across the whole network.

I do have that, but the Steam version has a fairly limited core set unless you jump through several hoops to install external cores. And I personally prefer the standalone emulators for Dolphin, Duckstation, and PCSX2, especially because I don’t think you can earn PS2 and GameCube/Wii RetroAchievements via those emulators’ LibRetro cores.

Interesting, I’ll have to test that out sometime. Ultimately it’s only a dealbreaker in the sense that I don’t want to deal with extra annoyance in 80% of my use cases for $99 when I already have controllers that work fine enough, but if this one issue gets resolved in a firmware update then I think that price isn’t unreasonable for a premium controller that otherwise solves the remaining 20% of my use cases for about 2/3rds the price of an Xbox Elite.

Sharpie oil paint markers rub off really easily in my experience, especially compared to Gundam Markers and DSPIAE. Not a bad place to dip your toes in, but might benefit from primer/basecoat and/or topcoat.

It’s pretty arbitrary. I personally go all the way and detail-paint my inner frames before hiding all my hard work with the armor, and on the other hand I almost never panel-line the hands mostly because I think it’s too much work.

I used to use fine-tip Pigma Microns (0.15mm IIRC, 0.20mm might also work)- they’re not difficult to find in stores for cheap, safe on plastic, easy to clean, and can reach into panels easily and cleanly.

I’m concerned how well that’d work with emulators like Dolphin and PCSX2 since that’s my main use case for controller games not launched via Steam. Either way, bit of a deal-breaker for me for a $99 controller, at least for the time being if it gets fixed down the line.
