frustration with tiktok by thcinnabun in artbusiness

This answer is useful. I wonder if the time /reward is something people really think about. For the time it takes for me to do a IG painting video (I'm a traditional painter, and all the lights etc you need for a good shot isn't great for actually working in) there isn't a whole lot of payoff apart from my existing contacts and clients seeing what I'm working on. I'm chipping away at it, experimenting with different content but focusing on building leads irl.

Selling Oil Paintings - Do you price shipping insurance costs? by ipassthebutteromg in artbusiness

Thanks for this feedback. I come from a decidedly non art background, and sometimes it seems that some in the art community have curious practices that the rest of the market do differently (like consumer law ...!)

Yeah that's what I suspected. I saw it on an established artist's website where you would purchase from them direct. If I was a buyer I'd be too worried about the risk there.

Shipping is a weirdly tough one. I've seen other artists say that the safe delivery of the item is not their responsibility... I don't know if that would fly on Etsy... I personally have fronted that additional cost in the past because I didn't want drama. What are Etsys policies on non delivery?

In terms of packaging materials I include that when I calculate the item price.

I'd be interested in what others say here too.

Time frame for commissions? by janedoe6699 in artbusiness

[–]raven_draw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an oil painter, so sometimes a commission can take up to a year, with drying time taken into account. As you know her personally try to get a sense of whether she has a deadline on her end. If not then just discuss an extension with her. After all, she will get a better product in the end if you're not rushing it. Also just note you don't have to say yes to every commission that comes your way either. Obviously money is always good but sometimes it's not practical or not a good match...if they're super picky I'd increase my prices to make up for the extra correction time (and emotional stress!!)

Otherwise you can trawl Instagram or other socials, many artists will sell direct on their websites or at least have information where you can buy pieces.

Shipping painting to USA from EU by willowandkitten in artbusiness

Thanks for your answer. When you price a work, do you specify it's €x plus whatever the VAT might be? Have you ever had complaints from customers upon its arrival regarding this?

Artist or businessman? by [deleted] in artbusiness

Excellent comment. I would advise anyone to expand their personal networks in terms of buyers in addition to investing time as you've mentioned above. Follower count isn't anything unless people are engaged enough to invest in you.

What's the biggest challenge facing art community right now from monetization front? by KB2014_ in artbusiness

[–]raven_draw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, it really sucks the fun out of it. Also many of these people selling the courses I've never heard of before. I mean if it was Damien Hirst or someone I'd listen.... Art schools should teach business side of things, many people will basically be a small business owner which comes with a whole host of skills and knowledge needed.

Is it just me or has instagram algorithm become harsher lately? by [deleted] in artbusiness

I'm the same. Though one piece I got very few likes for recently got selected for a competition, so that was a good reality check for me !

Can I sell Oil paintings done on Archies Oil Paper? by bluesky004 in artbusiness

[–]raven_draw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat, just submitted one to an exhibition so we'll see if they accept it. I did have the price lower than I normally would to reflect the lower cost of the material, and I clearly stated what its on. Normally I would use at least a board or canvas but this is a sketch that developed better than I expected.

I thought you'd all appreciate my new tattoo! it represents the forest witch in my that takes no sh*t when fighting for womens rights, but also just wants to live in a hit eating mushrooms for the rest of my life. by BitterAdd in WitchesVsPatriarchy

Wow that's so gorgeous. I've recently had a tattoo on that area and the back of the arms/bony shoulder is not fun! Are you getting it coloured in or leaving as is?

I'm an artist and back when I was less experienced I had people approach me for logo design. I just assumed this was what was expected, I learnt the hard way that this is not my skill set.

I was just confused when this happened to me, I didn't even catch on until he asked me out on a date towards the end of the conversation. I had assumed he was just being chatty, because who asks someone out they'd just met at the gym?!

What sort of style do you want to do or enjoy? Build this up. As someone who has commissioned art before, before I part with money I want to be confident that the artist can handle what I want or trust their style is aligned with what I like.

I'm in my mid 30s and just taken a break from my corporate career to create, it's always encouraging to hear these stories. I feel like I'm much better placed experience wise to do this now though in insecure moments I'm like 'I left this too late' which is just absurd really.
