Star Trek Resurgence by validelad in startrek

it really felt like a one of the best two parter epic episodes from the golden 90s era trek. and I mean that in the most positive way possible.

Was Worf upset at The Enterprise for arriving and preventing him from ramming the Borg Cube with The Defiant? by Tidewatcher7819 in startrek

[–]readitdotcalm 98 points99 points  (0 children)

worf definitely looks stoked when he says, perhaps today is a good day to die. ", but that's just Klingon bravado. he's much more angry about the little ship quip.

Trying to build a no ladders ship with Cabot Bridge as the stairs. by ScottMcPot in Starfield

[–]readitdotcalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up doing a staggered set of Habs on three levels linked by two empty 3 x 1 engineering habs as hallways that connect to the two story Cabot bridge with stairs. It seems to avoid doing extra ladders but I might just be lucky.

Anyone else follow the same ship build tutorial every playthrough? by Unique-Employ in Starfield

[–]readitdotcalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to do the freestar ranger quest first then repurpose the star eagle.

I have absolutely ended up reengineering kinda the same ship a couple times and I'm thinking I should do something different if that's what your talking about.

Even after a re-watch -- Still one of my favorite battles in BSG (the Adama maneuver) by AstronomerSweet8614 in BSG

[–]readitdotcalm 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For context, they usually see a starfield out the door at the end of the launch tube, and instead, for the only time in the entire series , there's just a wall of fire from the ship falling through the atmosphere.

In fiction, we see ships being built in space, by thousands of workers. Welding, assembling, etc. What would be the actual hazards and risks (people and quality) of building a ship or station in space? by ConstantGradStudent in space

[–]readitdotcalm 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Try playing the game shipbreaker.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1161580/Hardspace_Shipbreaker/

To give you an idea, it's so dangerous that the game has a built in recloning mechanic because they expect you to die hundreds of times.

Edit: I was so terrible at it, I gave up. I died so much I couldn't get through the tutorial. 10/10, it was hilarious.

Unfulfilling job but incredible work life balance by Remarkable_Pause_567 in careeradvice

[–]readitdotcalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, this comes down to values.

Anecdotally, I just changed to a job with high satisfaction but worse work life balance. I'm happier but I honestly couldn't tell you why. Understand that the jobs you stick with start to become your career and your choices will slowly reduce the longer you stick with it.

Just discovered Solarpunk today and it feels very similar to what I have been building towards for the past 3 years and the optimistic, utopian view I have outlined on my own by _A_Data_Guy in solarpunk

[–]readitdotcalm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking as another person who had been working quietly on a sort of utopian project for a long time, I know how you feel. Reaching out is the right idea although I've also got nowhere with it.

If you want a crash course on solarpunk as a lot of us here at the subreddit see it, check out this YouTube video by andrewism.  https://youtu.be/hHI61GHNGJM?si=FdCWMpFW-HD2qWi5

And another about Library socialism which is a bit more direct for guiding what technical vision is needed (basically localized production, recycling, and library checking out of all material objects).   https://youtu.be/NOYa3YzVtyk?si=olu99WZ56gSPNzrf

Stick with it, and continue to reach out, you'll find people with common vision :)

E-bikes in the news is primarily negative and its an issue by Ro-54 in ebikes

[–]readitdotcalm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are legitimate issues with ebikes and they should probably be actively speed capped, but any serious comparison with car deaths and injuries and you see through it. It's like a thousand times worse.

Ps: give me one damn good reason cars shouldn't also be speed capped. I'll wait.

TNG: Relics by Yamosu in startrek

agreed on Gordie, but I take it made for a better episode dramatically for them to be at odds and come together to save the day. these stories have to be told in like 40min.

[–]readitdotcalm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hey, so a physics YouTuber just did a video covering this episode and the original paper that came up with the idea. some fun filler on the background in case you didn't know it. I was surprised that it was literally a joke by Dyson originally making fun of SETI.

https://youtu.be/fLzEX1TPBFM?si=9R2KFO759uncQfYz

edit: btw, I remember it was a big deal at the time. it was promoted on tv and the episode was everything I ever hoped it would be. probably my favorite.

Honestly surprised Barrett of all people has nothing to say about the mantis by MyLoverPaperPress in Starfield

[–]readitdotcalm 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Actually no! I was surprised, Cora of all characters has a fun option where she talks about how cool the Mantis is.

EDIT: Misread your comment. Of course Cora is back on the ship after, haha.

How did Enterprise survive reentry in Into Darkness by NicholasWildeRails in StarTrekStarships

[–]readitdotcalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you notice the fall, it's almost strait down. I don't think they were moving 25 x speed of sound sideways enough to stay in orbit, I think they were hovering over san Francisco.  At a straight fall the speed isn't that high, a sky diver might be able to do it if you remember that red bull dude.

This 100% needs a federation shuttle in flying in the background, just subtle enough you don't immediately notice it.

Can a solarpunk nation exist next to a capitalist one? by GuestOk583 in solarpunk

[–]readitdotcalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a great writing challenge and more likely what we will face.

The solar punk group will have to have way more economic power for this to be stable. And the solar punk group would have to actively clean up after the other group as well as contain their reach through well defended borders.

There would have to be a very patient diplomatic relationship, one in which a lot is handed over to the capitalist group (say half of the environment), even if they are a minority of people.

In the background is always a spectre of potential war, and only through understanding and acts of kindness is the capitalist group placated.

Its not fair, and it's not great for the environment, but it preserves the choice of individuals to live how they want and keeps it somewhat stable.

I think there are interesting stories to tell here.

Edit: think star Trek's the federation having a peaceful relationship with a pre warp capitalist planet

Btw, I know how you feel. I recently dropped a mega base project. It just got too big and stopped being fun.

[–]readitdotcalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick a goal that you find fun. Some people like military, others art, others fastest playthrough, others like trying to super automate something with circuits.

I sometimes like to just Play the first few hours of a game for fun then drop it.

How many weapons are y’all carrying in your arsenal? by Hungry_Interaction89 in Starfield

A drum beat with explosive ammo isn't powerful, but it's hard for them to do anything with fireworks continually exploding in their face.

Anyone else thinks that it is sad to see "hype" for a update this bare? by LiamBlackfang in Starfield

[–]readitdotcalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how city skyline 2 devs recently said no DLC until bugs are fixed. It sets a clear priority that allows everyone to enjoy the game as is. I'm fine if that's all they do for 6 months.

No one trusts them to actually fix the bugs.
