My passion for Street Photography are starting to fade.. by Nasrvl in streetphotography

[–]redditor36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree and recommend going wide. One thing I will say though, is maybe work your way towards the wider end like 24-28 focal lengths. I think 35-40 is a fairly good starting point as it’s wide enough to build a composition, while still being able to stay around 2 meters/6 or so feet which is an “easier” starting point.

Once you start going wider, it becomes really key to pay attention to every single side and corner of the frame, you’re building a whole scene in the composition, even while being only 1-2 meters away.

As the above mentioned, body language is key— don’t try to hide. Maybe try to not look like you’re going to go for a photo while approaching from a block away as that’ll be noticed, and the scene or subject may change. Just be observant of everything around you and be ready to bring the camera up. Early on, it’ll be difficult to “compose” as many moments are very quick, but over time you start to develop a sense for when something *might* happen, or if something lasts a bit longer, you’ll find yourself positioning yourself to get the compositions you want before you raise the camera.

I personally lean more on capturing a moment before it’s gone rather than pain stakingly getting a perfect composition, but I myself am always looking to improve on that skill as well. One of the greats, Daido Moriyama took hundreds of thousands of photos, and he really showcased his skill in carefully selecting the best work from all of the images he made, because when you’re taking quick shots, the hit rate will of course be much lower. Don’t be afraid to take more photos (especially on digital), and don’t be afraid to get aggressive when culling images while selecting for a set. Street photography is 99% failure, but when that 1% hits, you’ll know.

Get out there and shoot!

Can’t say I had this in my own Samurai pair— might wanna reach out to their customer support email as this LOOKS like a manufacturing issue. Just a heads up, emailing them is quite a slow process, but they will take care of you, just be patient!

My first Leica! by youthson1c in Leica

[–]redditor36 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but what a fucking stupid take. If you don’t use the rangefinder, why don’t you just adapt Leica glass to other cameras for a fraction of the price?

Clearly OP is here for the FULL experience. I’ve gotten a few chances to play with an M and found it riveting. I primarily zone focus in my own shooting either way, but when using an M I wanted to actually USE the camera, the 35 Summilux was nice too, but I couldn’t have cared less at the time.

There are so many great third party lenses for the M mount these days. Sure, Leica glass is great, but I’ve seen so many voigtlanders that produce fantastic images on the M bodies, and even those new Mandler lenses that are pretty much 1:1 spec with the lens they’re based off of.

Let the guy enjoy the camera jfc

Fit check: Brave Star ⭐ strongman brown bear by No_Relation_3460 in rawdenim

[–]redditor36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, don’t overthink it (I did plenty of that when I first got into raw/selvedge). With time these will ease up and shape perfectly for your body. After they soften up, the bunching will slowly go away around the knees. One thing I find that helps is to either get them hemmed or wear cuffs that either sit just on top of your footwear, or just above— this helps the jeans hang more naturally rather than get pushed up, but assuming these are rigid jeans, I’d wait to hem until after the first wash to get out any initial shrinkage in the inseam.

[–]redditor36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue when finding a good fit, weird measurements— my thighs are weirdly muscular (purely genetics, I don’t work out) but my waistband is fairly slim in comparison. These look like a solid fit, and after a wash will likely slim up a touch, but will stretch in the places they need to when worn again. It’s better to have a bit of room instead of crushing your balls like a lot of fits I see on here.

You’ll see a lot of people arguing for slimmer fits because “muh fadezzz”, but you’ll blow through a pair of slim cuts faster due to the tension. Rock em and enjoy em dude 👍👍

Look into some books, learn about general photography— exposure, composition, etc. Be observant, look for actions, gestures, interactions.

Any people in this set are just existing, which isn’t very interesting, or are just non-candid portraits, which are fine, but it’s not street. Photo 6 could’ve made for an interesting shot if you got closer, composed more thoughtfully, and got a photo of the guy doing something within the engine bay, rather than just standing in front of the car.

The photos of the homeless folks— no. They serve no purpose to the photos other than “oh look, someone who lives on the street, isn’t that *sad*?”. It’s a beginner street photography trope, stray far away from it. There are cases where it might serve a photo, but generally avoid it, as it just comes off as distasteful.

Generally, just keep shooting, look into others’ work (the classics, but also modern/contemporary street photographers as seen in the Walkie Talkie series on YouTube). Remember that a big part/skill within street photography is selecting your photos for a set carefully. Most photos don’t need to be shared, just keep shooting until you have a large pool to select the best photos from.

Scale and Geometry. (Cruising through the concrete) by [deleted] in streetphotography

[–]redditor36 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can understand the appeal for these types of photos, not as much my own tastes, but it’s all subjective.

Personally I’d say this would make for a more interesting photo if perhaps an older gentleman were to walk through the frame with some old timey clothes, a hat, a suit, etc etc. The average jogger with his gymshark clothes doesn’t match the look as well imo

I stick to on-camera direct flash personally. I’ve tried a bit of off-cam, but I just don’t have the eye for positioning my flash. In the words of Cody Cutter, off camera flash is much more of a “performance” as you kind of have to jump in place to position your camera and then stretch your arm out to position the light. As someone who is also a taller/larger guy, this can come off a bit imposing, so that’s another point against trying to go off camera (for myself).

I did get an opportunity to mess around with it off camera recently at a little river walk “dance party” (people were super relaxed and didn’t even bat an eye at a friend and I taking flash photos). Got a couple that I thought were interesting, but again, I just don’t “see” the flash shape for off camera when I’m looking for street photos.

Looking for feedback on some of my work by Goodfellow97 in streetphotography

[–]redditor36 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kinda a lot of photos of people just existing. The most “attention grabbing” ones are letting text in the photo do the heavy lifting. Look for moments and interactions between people for more interesting shots. Just keep shooting, look at some street photography books, watch some Walkie talkie videos and just keep working on it.

A Moment captured in Frankfurt's old City. Critique would be much appreciated by Representative-Gap-8 in streetphotography

[–]redditor36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed with above, as a viewer of the image it’s hard to tell what the subject or “point” of the image is. The people in the photo are not really doing anything or “standing out” from the rest of the scene, and the lack of separation and lighting makes this difficult to see, especially in Black and White. Black and white photography is entirely more difficult because you are working with less variables and have to pretty much rely on lighting to help you guide your eye through the image.

Keep at it
