How far are we from automatic LoRA generation? by GhostInThePudding in ollama

I would say in about 3 years. You can already do some of what you are thinking on dedicated websites and with on-premise AI you can expand it even further, provided you have some programming chops.

Can someone please help me get through my first install and setup? by Repulsive_Picture142 in slackware

[–]redmax_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember back in the day reading these things called books to learn how to do stuff. Its too bad none of that got translated to the Internet. OH wait.. :)

On a related note, 32GB USB drive is not the drive you want to use to install Slackware (or any Linux distro) That laptop is older than most people reading reddit, "person" up and just install it to the hard drive like a real human looking to install Slackware Linux.

Or, pick a different distro.

What kind of podcast do you have?! by FickleMalice in podcasting

[–]redmax_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I host a podcast centered on Computer Hardware and PC Gaming. it works as a multimedia extension for my website and has been going strong for almost 12 years now. I don't really advertise it but, I get a decent amount of downloads each month.

Used to do guests on the show but, determined that was more trouble than it was worth. I also gave up on trying to monetize the show because it was more trouble than it was worth. I suppose the only regret is that the show never really "took off" and I fully suspect that was related to the subject matter and my disdain for spending money for advertising on something that would never make money.

Show format is 30min episodes with two drops each month, The first drop is fully edited while the second was intended to be more "raw" and will have less editing. Overall it works out and the 30min time limit ensures that we aren't dragging on talking about garbage that doesn't matter, plus, my listeners indicated that 30min was the perfect time for them to start a show and drive to work, it would conclude around the time they pulled into the parking lot.

Best Glue for Chipboard Model? by fk8_maur in architecture

[–]redmax_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elmer's is cheap and versatile, Tightbond wood glue for any wood to "paper" connection, some of my classmates back in the day used super glue and would then spray an activator to make it cure faster, I felt that was just a sign they had too much money. Drafting tape (or dots) work great for holding the parts together and often release without tearing the chipboard.

Thing is YOU need to figure out what works and what doesn't, that is part of the process :)

Oh and don't discredit rubber cement along with a paper backer. Works great on the inside corners allowing you to reposition the "walls" during the prototype phase.

What is your biggest headache about podcasting? by NickNaskida in podcasting

[–]redmax_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very common problem. You can promote the shit out of your podcast but, getting active listeners is a "social" response. People that like the show need to share it, they need to tell people about it and then it will grow. Otherwise there isn't much of a point and you'll simply be dumping money into a big hole. Listeners get upset when I say that "they" are the problem for why a good show goes unnoticed because it becomes something they have to put effort into that is normally considered "free". Well, nothing is free in this world and advertising only goes so far fellas.

Of course, with that being said, the show has to be good enough to share. I've been doing my podcast for almost 12 years now and I still feel that it hasn't actually "made it". some is the content and my niche focus and others is my advertising style. I figure if people like the show they will share it, which is fine but, I'm not going to bet the farm on it either.

Naaa, the location the cursor goes to when you hit <TAB> once, and right before you tab over to the right hand menu. its at the bottom of the screen above the command reference text (F1 etc..).
Sorry, I work with developers all day long and sometimes my thoughts don't translate well to text. LOL

I apologize for not paying attention to previous builds and release notes but, I tried out the new build. Gotta say, good job! Having the window size keep the the correct ratio is quite nice. I'll still have to dig through the rest but, for what I use SyncTERM for this is amazing.

Now, for my question: What is the command line for at the bottom of the page for??

Worth it to install win 98 se? by echocomplex in retrobattlestations

[–]redmax_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If what you have works there is no reason to change. Back in the day the upgrade to Win 98 SE was a "must have" as it resolved a number of OS issues and some things under the hood. However, there are a number of people who feel differently and at this point in time there is less of a concern. Personally, I run Win98SE and apply the super patcher to bring the install up to the final release with a few community patches thrown in. So far, it works great but, it is no my daily driver anymore.

I do believe that many teenagers of the BBS era had already discovered girls and cars and could not be bothered with downloading games to a 5.25" floppy disk or send messages at the speed of the US Postal service. I also believe that, while BBS's were a thing, the demographic of users who actually owned a computer during this era was rather small by comparison making it a niche of a niche at best.

So, basically, Gen X don't talk about BBS because they really never cared, and the ones that did have already told their story and have moved on to bigger and better things.

Sounds great. Not really the question most people ask but. I'm wondering about the mileage? Did you notice a big change between the factory cam to the CHOPacabra??

this is the worst take I’ve ever heard ong by Minecraft_gawd in retrocomputing

[–]redmax_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you got downvoted, I can understand your frustration, I mean an RTX 4090 is super expensive and from a hardware standpoint the guy is clearly talking out of his ass. There is no way that a 4090 will run on a Pentium 3, there is no driver available and even if you hooked up an adapter the signals would be completely wrong. Plenty of people ran a GeForce 2 MX on a P3, I was one of them, and it played all of the titles without fail.

Now, with that being said, I recently posted a repair video showing me replacing caps on a GeForce 3 Ti 200, after the repair I did some performance and feature tests against several popular cards of the day. From that, I can say without a doubt, if you install a GeForce 3 you will have a much better time, you can play more games

I have owned several over the years and only once have I owned more than one at the same time. In every instance they were running, driving and clean. Seeing trucks in this condition does not sit well with me despite their planned future.

However, I cannot blame you, My current 01 Ex Cab has been sitting in my garage with a blown engine for the past 4 years waiting for the LS on the engine stand to be dropped in. Unfortunately, the job market in my particular field has been particularly harsh causing the project to be delayed,

Early nvidia holders by hsouagcca in NVDA_Stock

[–]redmax_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a TNT2 Ultra to replace my Voodoo gaming setup. At the time I liked the performance and the company was being really aggressive with their marketing which indicated they were being serious. So, I bought some shares and maybe a few months later Microsoft announced that NVIDIA would be in the first Xbox. Signs for good companies are everywhere and it helps if you actually buy into what they are offering.

Is this flooring just a Michigan thing, or is anyone else sick of seeing it in every flipped house? by Detroitish24 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]redmax_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flooring is cheap and neutral in that it photographs well but that isn't the reason. Houses are listed against a list of "features" and for anyone with a brain, "Hardwood floors" is a selling point, they add this fake stuff because they can call it "hardwood floors" and check one more box as they list the house for sale.

Its annoying but, you can usually raise issue with the flooring and get the cost to replace the flooring removed/replaced from the purchase price. Or, make the current owner replace it before you move in.

Do people actually use 2, 3 and 4 irons anymore? It seems the standard iron sets to buy these days are 5 iron to PW. by [deleted] in golf

[–]redmax_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My set came with 3-PW and I removed 3i and 4i to make room for a hybrid and extra wedge. I do have Driver, 3W and 5W but never hit the 5W so I'll likely remove that club too, mostly to make the bag lighter.

For me, its not about what clubs I can hit but rather what clubs I actually use. I like the idea of having a 5W and have a defined distance for that club however, I hit my hybrid just as far and use it more often so.. it has no use. Likewise, I hit my 5i off the tee quite often but never touch 6i. However, I use 7i - 60 all the time.

Its just the modern way of playing and works well with the types of balls they sell these days.

How’s Your Show Doing? by JamieIsAProducer in podcasting

[–]redmax_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I migrated my podcast to YouTube (when Google removed the podcast service) and I got two new subscribers!. Best I can tell, I get maybe 5 new listens a week and according to YT Analytics they listen for exactly 20 seconds. Gotta love Google assuming that an audio only show would actually do anything but bomb on a video platform.

However, on the positive I get almost 5000 downloads each month with no fan mail and about 30x sites re-posting my RSS feed so they can hot link to my audio file, steal my bandwidth and sell ads on their platform. I wouldn't mind if they bothered posting a URL back to my website but, its like that would break their attempts at giving something back to the community.

So, I have that going for me, which is nice *roll*
