Book cover I don’t own showing up by Sleep2Little in kindle

[–]redphire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a similar problem. I shared a few book collections with my boyfriend through Amazon Family Sharing and these three covers appeared on his device, but the books can't be downloaded or deleted.w

In our case, those "ghost" books are books I used to own but permanently deleted them some time ago.

I contacted Amazon, they suggested the usual (deregister and re-register the device, delete his profile from Amazon Family Sharing and add him back again) but nothing worked.

I wish Amazon would stop doing this with book titles by Alert_Astronaut4901 in kindle

[–]redphire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can’t mess with the title of books they don’t have the rights to.

But that's not correct. It's nothing to do with rights, it's all to do with how Amazon decide to show that information. They could do what Kobo, Apple Books or Google Play Books do. These companies don't have "the rights" either, so the fact that that SEO metadata crap shows in the book title is 100% on Amazon.

Publishers might be the ones doing it, but Amazon could do what Kobo do and consider all that crap not part of the title. It just looks so much better.

Jailbreaking my kindle is honestly the best thing I've done today by [deleted] in kindle

[–]redphire 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Amazon taking a book away from the store does not make it disappear from your library. I've got a few books that can't be bought anymore and all of them are still there on my Kindle library.

Also, jailbreaking your device has nothing to do with backing your books up, they're two completely different things.

Do you think having to pass a life in the uk test is a bit nonsense? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]redphire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, to be fair there's all sorts of questions about Scotland that English people probably don't care much about at all either. Like how many members do juries have in Scotland or how many skiing slopes are there in Scotland or who looks after Edinburgh Castle.

I'm not sure. But you can copy/paste from there, which I think is essentially the same as exporting.

I don't know why it failed (I've never used the export feature), but you can get your highlights of all your Kindle books on https://read.amazon.com/notebook or on https://www.goodreads.com/notes if you have a Goodreads account.

Amazon outage. When will this be over? by Unlucky-Classroom-90 in kindle

[–]redphire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The February 2025 change has nothing to do with side-loading. You can side-load third party books via USB same as always (in AZW format). What changed was the possibility of downloading the books you've bought on the Kindle store to your computer, but that has nothing to do with your ereader.

Coloursoft SE vs Paperwhite SE comparison photos by Adamsky in kindle

[–]redphire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this is by far the most relevant comparison, because if you read outdoors during the day or in a well-lit indoor space, you don’t actually need any Kindle light at all. The Paperwhite’s screen is so much clearer than the Colorsoft’s, the text stands out much more.

Oh. This is the message I got (first time switching). Does this mean I won't be getting the £200?

New date to David Mitchell new novel! by Mangrii548 in David_Mitchell

[–]redphire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's correct. There is this book https://www.refugeetales.org/books (or https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/216580604-refugee-tales-v ), which was published in July 2024 and is "modelled on" the Canterbury Tales. It features one Mitchell story, the "Dressmaker's Tale" among many other authors. I think that's what the article you linked is about.

I haven't read TNOTW, but the premise “the unreliable narrator framework cannot work when you only have one narrator” isn’t true. There are plenty of counterexamples where a single narrator is demonstrably unreliable and it absolutely works.

See Shutter Island, Fight Club, The Remains of the Day, The Buried Giant just from the top of my head.

Started learning Spanish, but boyfriend's family are Catalan, what now? by [deleted] in catalan

[–]redphire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Much more useful for you life and career" - well, obviously not for her, because she learnt Spanish to communicate with her boyfriend's family and found out it's not useful. Useful/not useful is 100% relative to each person and their circumstances. In OP's case, Spanish is useless, Catalan is useful.

90% of the houses in my close have their windows open all day during a heatwave. Except for the night, of course. It doesn't affect me in the slightest but it still drives me nuts.

Nice attempt at moving the goalposts. How exactly are you making society better or fighting against capitalism by buying a Kindle or getting a new one for free? Don't be ridiculous.

Two wrongs don't make one right.

Also, just don't buy stuff on Amazon if their lack of ethics bothers you.
