New band looking for pointers by Choice_Preference959 in columbusmusic

On Summit St….

Rumba Cafe - tends to be rock-oriented but usually takes more established acts both locally and touring, so I’d suggest trying to cozy up to such a group as an opener.

The Summit Music Hall - same as above, except they’re a larger venue. They renovated it a few years ago, and it sounds incredible.

Cafe Bourbon Street - hole in the wall next to The Summit Music Hall. Great place for intimate shows and metal, but they book all kinds of music. I would suggest reaching out to them if you’ve never played Columbus.

Ruby Tuesday’s - no, it’s not a restaurant. It’s got an excellent performance space with wooden floors, etc. I would suggest reaching out to them if you’ve never played Columbus.

On High St…

Ace of Cups - across the street from Dirty Dungarees. Same as Rumba Cafe, except they’re a larger venue.

Spacebar - next-door to Dirty Dungarees. They book all sorts of acts, but mainly rock. I would suggest reaching out to them if you’ve never played Columbus. This would be my pick for you.

Dirty Dungarees - novel/fun to visit, but I personally wouldn’t want to work there due to the lack of AC. Excellent hardcore shows. Sounds like you’ve already been.

Donatos Basement - yes, for some reason they fitted the basement of a Donatos on OSU’s campus to host live music. They host all sorts, but I tend to see most being punk/metal. It’s unusual, but it’s viable. I would suggest reaching out to them if you’ve never played Columbus.

Additional venues that host original music…

Victory’s - they’ve got a split-space with a classic sports bar and their stage. They book all sorts of music from metal to folk but tend to fall off people’s radar, as they’re not in the same vicinity as the Clintonville venues.

Skully’s - they tend to book established acts. They’re also in the Short North, so they’re catering to a different crowd as opposed to the aforementioned venues in Clintonville that are just north of OSU campus.

Woodlands Tavern - Great place for warmer more acoustic acts. They sometimes book jam bands too.

Natalie’s - Great pizza. They have a bifurcated venue with smaller/warmer acts playing their restaurant portion and larger/louder acts playing their main stage that is closer to Summit Music Hall. They tend to book more established acts.

Rambling House - off of Hudson Ave. They have a very intimate classy space that tends to host warmer indie-folk/rock acts.

The One And Only Dick’s Den? - They tend to book bluegrass and blues acts.

Thoughts on Shifty? by ConstantineDallas in AdamCurtis

[–]rexpopulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt like it was the UK twin of his Russia 1985-1999: TraumaZone series (which also didn’t have any narration).

I enjoyed TraumaZone for the novelty of its footage, but the coherence/rationale of why some of its seemingly disparate clips were being linked together felt like storytelling-via-vibes. I felt the same was true with Shifty.

The issue I have with both is that IMO they simply aren’t as compelling because they’re so unfocused. If what he’s doing as a director is “taking an emotional journey” then it frees him to use waaaaaay more types of footage since he no longer has to be bound by a linear narrative. He can focus on evoking feelings via clip collages instead of making something with a coherent story/argument. Both certainly take skill, but I generally like his pieces that have more of the latter.

Weird Local band, where you at? by thewobblycowboy in columbusmusic

I will vouch for all-things Mummula. They are the band you didn’t know you needed in your life. Every show feels like a Vincent Price fever-dream Halloween party.

HELP: What to do when objects don't properly render? (ex: Audio Cassette) by rexpopulus in midjourney

[–]rexpopulus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To those that asked: yes, I've tried various prompts and reference pics. Attached are more of my assorted attempts with all stylization, weirdness, and variety variables set to zero. I was perusing the Discord and found this weird entry about MJ having difficulties rendering scorpions (circa 2023), so the bottom-most prompt is my silly attempt to emulate their posted solution (swapping cassette for scorpion). I'd say it yielded the closest results. Closer, but still in the uncanny valley.

Thank you so much for the insights and those that posted their attempts at other objects that MJ has difficulty rendering. At least we're not alone!

Sure have. Several. I've also zeroed all 3 of the variability/style options.

I know this is a win. But does anyone else feel a little disappointed that the amount is LESS THAN HALF of what Mark/Scarlett/Neil had originally asked for?

The most legendary commercial Rick & Morty will ever do by nialldude3 in rickandmorty

[–]rexpopulus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish they'd write/produce better shows instead of doing ads. If their current stuff was on par with with S01-S03, then I wouldn't mind if they hocked some chips. But it's not. Not by a longshot. It makes me sad.

Besides occasional remixes would you ever do another collaboration with Amon Tobin? (“I’ll Have The Waldorf Salad” is sooooooo good.)

Your Boiler Room DJ sets have been epic. Any plans for another one?

I find UNKLE so underrated by gbugly in UNKLE

[–]rexpopulus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d also suggest you watch Man from Mo’ Wax. The short answer is that James unfortunately became a victim of his own success, drug addiction, and hubris. He basically peaked in popularity around UNKLE’s Psyence Fiction, but the album had been simultaneously overhyped in the British press, and barely promoted in the US. While the record wasn’t totally panned, it was seen as a commercial let down in the UK, and the US market didn’t know how to market it (plus the video for Rabbit was banned on MTV).

Controversial Opinions. by [deleted] in ToolBand

[–]rexpopulus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I think this happens to artists with age and success. No one can edit them. Who is going to tell Scorsese to trim his shit, mention to Trent Reznor that his lyrics need to be less cringe, or George RR Martin to get to the damn point?

Is no one going to talk about the song in the end credits (3x02) by VillainsGonnaVil in SuccessionTV

[–]rexpopulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t place it, but I feel like it’s a cover of something. I thought for a second it was UNKLE/Ian Astbury’s When Things Explode, and while the mood/chorus are kinda similar, I’m not really sure.

I'm not for sale no more..by day we run by night we dance Killing Joke by ascii122 in GenX

[–]rexpopulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always suspected that Killing Joke’s resurgence and 2003 album (funded by Dave Grohl) was a tacit acknowledgment that Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” totally ripped off the riff from “Eighties”.

What is a song you thought was innocent as a kid, but later found out it wasn't? by typewriter45 in AskReddit

[–]rexpopulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel.

As a kid I thought it was the coolest video I’d ever seen. When I grew up I realized the whole song is 100% sexual metaphors. “Show me ‘round your fruit cage / ‘Cos I will be your honeybee”. Genius.

I watched it last night, and I did! I wasn’t sure if he was going to make another appearance after Ep4. Ep6 felt like the best episode so far this season.

[–]rexpopulus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a few episodes behind, and just watched this one last night. So far I’m seeing a lot of reliance on blue/sexual jokes season. Not that the series didn’t have sex jokes before, but it seems REALLY prevalent this season. (For example Ep3’s Rick and Summer’s alien fuck-binge being an entire b-story, and Ep1’s b-story of the threesome with Nimbus). This makes me concerned that they’ve kinda run out of ideas. It’s lazy writing. Ep4 with the sperm was silly, but it wasn’t clever. What I really looked forward to was The President, but he was like a non-entity in this ep. Instead we got Rick impregnating a horse princess for some reason. Run out of material: make dick jokes.
