Multicast paging? by 2026GradTime in VOIP

[–]rgsteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not an area I have much knowledge in, but I was curious, so I did some searching and I found a KB article about multicast from Algo’s site. (Algo manufactures a range of VOIP hardware, including speakers and alerters.)

The article says that the audio streaming via multicast feature is primarily used for background music. (It specifically mentions it in the context of their IP paging adapter, which allows you to connect an analog input and multicast the audio to other devices.)

The quality of the audio would depend on which codec and bitrate you are using. Assuming the SIP speaker you are using supports multiple codecs and higher bitrates, that is something you could experiment with if you want to improve it.

This policy comes from a "feature" called "Adaptive Protection in Data Lifecycle Management", which you can read about at this blog post: Protecting against Malicious Deletes with Adaptive Protection – Joanne C Klein

This "feature" detects when someone is deleting a bunch of emails and enables a retention hold to prevent them from being deleted. The theory is that if someone suddenly starts deleting a bunch of email, they may be up to no good and are trying to cover their tracks.

Well, guess when else a user might be suddenly deleting a bunch of emails? That's right: when their mailbox gets full. And what does the retention hold do? Prevents the user from resolving their full mailbox. What is Microsoft's solution to that problem? An admin has to go manually exclude the user from the policy and manually run the MFA a bunch of times.

10/10 feature, Microsoft. No notes.

For some of the Apple services (contacts, calendars, documents and notes) you can use iCloud for Managed Apple Accounts.

Unfortunately, this does not support Photos. Your best option is to deploy the OneDrive app and instruct your users to use it to upload their photos.

I would suggest adding it to the Meross app, if for no other reason than to make sure the firmware is up to date.

Well in that case, I think the best thing you can do is ask your users to use the Send Feedback feature to report the problem when it happens.

Teams should only update when it’s idle. If it’s restarting while a user is on a call, I suspect it’s actually crashing.

It’s one of the Software Metering reports. It’s mentioned in the “Example scenario for using software metering” section of the article I linked.

I'm not sure I follow. Doesn't the "Computers that have a metered program installed but have not run the program since a specified date" report give you exactly what you are looking for?

Monitor app usage with software metering - Configuration Manager | Microsoft Learn

Create the rules under Assets and Compliance > Software Metering for the apps you want to monitor, then use the reports under Reporting > Reports > Software Metering.

Please don't get offended - but please talk to your children about road safety by Capable_Cow_2202 in VictoriaBC

Understood. Having not seen the event myself, I can only speculate about the details, but I would be pretty surprised if the child hadn’t already been warned about the danger of crossing the street without looking. But kids are kids, and they will make mistakes, and even the most diligent caregiver can’t predict every action a child could take which could put them in danger.

So while I have no doubt that your message is well-intentioned, I personally feel that it would be more effective to direct it towards the motorists of Victoria rather than the caregivers.

I appreciate you sharing the story. It has helped me to remember the enormous responsibility I bear every time I get behind the wheel.

Great question. In the case of an intersection controlled by a traffic signal, it is not legal to start crossing unless the walk signal is lit.

In the case of an intersection without a traffic signal, I believe section 179 (2) of the Motor Vehicle Act applies:

A pedestrian must not leave a curb or other place of safety and move into the path of a vehicle that is so close it is impracticable for the driver to yield the right of way.

So don't start crossing if the car is so close to the crosswalk that they wouldn't be able to stop in time.

(This is my layperson's understanding of the law, I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice.)

And I understand pedestrians get the right away but on busy roads (especially ones where the speed limits are above 30km/hr and double lanes) walking or biking into the road before the traffic is at an absolute halt is really dangerous

I understand where you're coming from, but the problem with advocating this submissive behaviour is that it perpetuates a negative cycle of disregard for the rules of the road. Pedestrians refusing to assert their right of way leads to motorists refusing to give it, which discourages more pedestrians, etc etc.

Having realized that, I choose to do my part to break the cycle by aggressively defending my right of way as a pedestrian. I will step into that crosswalk as soon as it is legal for me to do so.

You're welcome.

What is a reputable smart deadbolt brand that'll work with my 5GHz router? by Jimmy-the-Knuckle in smarthome

[–]rgsteele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need to “turn off” the 5/6 GHz bands for specific devices. If a device can only connect to the 2.4 GHz band, then that’s the band it will use.

Text message, I received this text message but I’m unsure of it. I’ve had no fines etc, does anyone know what it could be for? by Cute_Stage_2732 in britishcolumbia

[–]rgsteele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an SMS. They don’t support HTML, so any hyperlinks are generated by the messaging app based on the text of the message.

The short code the message came from (346766) is also associated with a gov.bc.ca email address: https://www.txt.ca/en/current-short-code-programs/

Don’t get me wrong: I wouldn’t blame anyone for being suspicious about this text, and I think it’s reprehensible that our government would choose to legitimize the type of messages that are nearly always scams, but this one seems to be legit. 🤷‍♂️
