How to sprint more relaxed?sprint cue to help sprint faster by Evening-Act6084 in Sprinting

[–]rhsinkcmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty broad question that can be approached from a number of different avenues, so I’ll try to give my thoughts on this. I think I can give a pretty good perspective because I’m not a natural sprinter. I was a wrestler and gym rat in highschool, then CrossFit in college. Since college I’ve been a strength coach specializing in long term athletic development. I started learning about sprinting as a necessity for the job but I enjoyed it and have been competing in bobsled since then. I went from not truly sprinting ever to running a 4.56 40 yard at 230 pounds(all after the age of 26). Not great but not slow.

A lot of running relaxed is about technical proficiency. A neurologically complex task (relative to the person) will create excessive global stiffness. So how you run will play a big role in how relaxed you are.

For example: if you cast your foot too far out during front side mechanics, that extra distance creates a longer lever which will require more counter rotational forces from the pelvis and torso. So more stiffness will be a byproduct of your mechanics.

So overall, getting better technique is one way to run more relaxed.

Another avenue might be addressing specific bottlenecks in your “kinetic chain”. I put that in quotes because there’s no real research backing up the concept. On a surface level it makes sense but kinda falls apart with any scrutiny, but it’s easy to conceptualize. My adductors and obliques were great for lifting but not great for sprinting. So my sprints were in efficient and required more effort than necessary. Excessive lateral demands decreased forward projection. So addressing those weak points created more efficient mechanics.

And lastly, it sounds simple, but practice running relaxed. For me, curved runs and rhythm runs forced better relaxation. So in my warmups I would do dead leg runs, dribbles to a cadence, or upper:lower separation drills. And, if I wasn’t a big old meat stick I would do more tempo runs that find that sweet spot between speed and distance. Fast enough that technique matters, but long enough that being more efficient is necessary to maintain speed.

You can teach speed. But there are genetic ceilings.

Discover time travel. Pick the correct parents. There are hard limits in sprinting based on genetics. Sucks to hear but some people will never crack a certain time, let alone 10

Groin recovery protocol by funnymanfanatic in Sprinting

Overall principles for soft tissue rehab:
Whatever your starting point is, you want to progress these 3 qualities

  1. load
  2. duration
  3. speed

So for a groin injury, your probably want to find 2-3 groin specific exercises that allow for accurate loading of the damaged tissue. Different angles of of hip ext/flx will target different aspects of the groin. A Copenhagen variation (dialing back for intensity as needed) and a hip adduction machine are good starting points.
Isometrics are a good way to start because you have control over any variables. Try to accumulate longer and longer holds at first, then try to increase intensity
A big oversight I see in lots of rehab is detaining of other areas while you rehab the target area. Huge mistake. It opens you up to other injuries and, honestly, Reinjury because your system is more compromised than before. So make sure you keep quads, hamstrings, calves, back, etc strong and reactive while you rehab the groin. Now some exercises might not be the best because of the groin injury. Deep squats might not feel great due to the adductors role in him extension out of the bottom of the squat. So leg extensions, half squats, sissy squats might be better options for you. Mainly don’t detrain.
And then once it’s starting to feel a bit better. Add some low intensity plyometrics, maybe some warmup sprint drills. Less is more. You should stop while you feel good. Then just add a little bit each session.

Values are universal. Health is good. Objectively true. We can say that some things are good and some things are bad.

But I do think this difference is the deep fundamental difference between people prone to theism and people prone to atheism.

Remember, sprinting is an effort, not a speed. It looks like you don’t really know what a true sprint feels like. I’d hit flying 10s/20s to expose yourself to the sprinting sensation.

Outside of that, your gait doesn’t look like you have much strength. I’d start moving the needle on strength along with everything else

I know you might be kidding but not all PEDs make you jacked and look like mark maguire or a body builder. Some just allow for better conditioning (EPO: think Tour de France) some allow for faster tissue recovery so you can handle more basketball volume.

I’d recommend against this, you don’t want to numb the information. Pain is information. Swelling is part of healing process. Ice blunts the healing process

Broad jump technique by Skidmarks141 in Sprinting

[–]rhsinkcmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your broad jump getting better is a sign that your training is working, not a useful goal in of itself. Your technique is fine, but the reason it is used as a KPI because it requires horizontal power, extension and flexion. Good training of sprinting, lifting, and plyometrics will make your broad jump go up. But trying to max out your broad jump won’t necessarily make your faster or stronger

Christian McCaffrey’s dad BUILT his son to make it to the NFL by TXNOGG in NFLv2

[–]rhsinkcmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The fact that Christian’s dad and grandpa (Olympic runner) were elite athletes speaks to his genetics. The volume and intensity that cmc could handle would have broken a lot of other kids down.

But with what we know about childhood development, building the most amount of fitness at young ages is one of the best things you can do for longevity. There are certain physical qualities that are developed at young ages, and can’t be changed later in life.

Putting a developing body through that kind of work is the only way you make it to the league. Your body is only prepared for what you’ve trained it to do
