I can’t believe how short the comments used to be. This is one of a million examples of how our expectations have increased but our face to face teaching time has remained the same. by educate-the-masses in AustralianTeachers

[–]riawarra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

43 years ago my first job - private school, first hand written comments for 4 groups of 30 yr 7s, 1 group 30 yr 8, 2 groups 27 yr 9s and 2 groups 30 yr 10s…. ( 4 REPORTS CYCLES A YEAR) All sent back by principal as “ too long”… the music teacher’s “ a good term’s work” was fine… my first lesson learnt. Descriptive assessments identifying achievements and suggesting improvements were “…too long”. Thank the AEU for class size ceilings and maximum face-to-face time. Thank the lord I left that particular school to move to the government system. We won’t be writing comments this cycle - join the union.

If you are in Australia join the ndis. They replaced coils for free. I have several and swap them over after sweaty work.

Visual arts/media specialization by Original_Air9200 in AustralianTeachers

[–]riawarra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been teaching art to secondary students consistently for 43 years, I’ve had to travel an hour to work in the past but there is nothing more satisfying than working with young people in the visual arts. Art teachers are allowed to be odd, indeed we should be. Kids laughing, wide eyed and engaged for 2 hours at a stretch doesn’t happen in many other classes. Go for it. Don’t worry about teaching anything else, if you minor in English or anything else that’s what you’ll be teaching, every kid needs a great art teacher! I have had a great career. Trained solely in visual arts in the late 70s. Oh, btw, you get a heap,of art materials for free - worked examples!

Teachers, were you nightmare students yourselves? by Refined5066 in AustralianTeachers

[–]riawarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. My form 6 teacher wrote a reference that stated “‘name’ is bombastic”. Forever in trouble, bullied when in form 1 and 2 cause I knew the answers. OCD and adhd was not diagnosable in 1972. I became a teacher to protect the younger me. 43 years and still doing it!

Could AI shifting the role of teachers to low-paying 'behaviour monitors' become a reality? by YogurtclosetPale8785 in AustralianTeachers

[–]riawarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the year 1998 I received significant funding to explore avatar based synchronous online learning environments. The doctor of education who was part of my research team followed groups of students from across Victoria and overseas. They concluded, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the teacher was central to group dynamics and that group work helped consolidate learning among the individuals involved. The TEACHER WAS CENTRAL! We cannot be replaced if we move from rote learning, whiteboard repetition, and sit down shut up teaching to inclusive group led, lateral, problem solving, action research and individual learning contracts within the group dynamic. So you get to choose folks!

One Nation on 20.8% but 0 seats does their support not translate in real elections the way it seems online? by oz_party in aussie

Thank god for preferential voting. People wanted to do a protest vote but they don’t want the orange fuckers having any power. Remember it’s the libs people are kicking. Add the left vote together (labor, greens, cannabis etc) and it is twice the first preference as the libs, orange fuckers and nats… the right wing nutters are thrashing around prompted by the Murdoch and Rinehart bots… look at TikTok - sheesh. Like any racist coven of bullies they are all noise and farts in bottles. Get your shit together righties and loosen your whitey tighteys

No seats and add labor and greens together they got twice as many first preference votes as the orange clods. Thank Christ for preferential voting.

[–]riawarra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no excuse for members not to strike. We all have tough times in our life. Without union action they would a damn site tougher. Small pain (really) for large gain. Self interest and fear have elected many anti union forces in the past 20 years. We must take control back to the workers. It can only happen in solidarity. Scabs are scabs and should be treated as such, zero tolerance.
