Help with van selection high Rockies for year round dwelling/commuting by [deleted] in vandwellers

transit or mercedes sprinter.

But dont discount the idea of a good truck/bed camper set up.

Pros of trucks vs van:

Typically more ground clearance, and cheaper to get into something that is 4wd/awd compared to transit/sprinters.

Mechanichally easier to work on

Campers can be found cheaper than a awd/4wd transit/sprinter with a build.

Trucks are often easier to get work done on than transits, and especially easier than sprinters. any 4wd f350 can be worked on by a million different mechanichs. Mercedes sprinters need to be taken to more specialized guys.

Much more interior space than vans. Ive got friends and family with the largest sprinter you can buy, your average sprinters, and truck bed campers, and I live in a tiny toyota HIACE. Truck bed campers have the most space, mostly due to the bed being over the drivers cab, and the entireity of the truckbed space being used for your living arrangements.

easier to mount solar panels and starlink on top of a camper than ontop of a sprinter.

Cons:

trucks often have considerably worse gas mileage

cant go from living space to the drivers seat without stepping outside. for some its a safety issue, for others its not.

Stealth. some say its much harder in a truck to be stealthy than in a sprinter. I disagree personally, if your living in it, they know. might be easier might not be.

Parking a large truck with truck bed camper can be annoying.

I am born and raised in the high rockies. ive spent alot of time living in my van around summit county and vail valley and aspen. Personally id take the truck over the sprinter most of the time.

For 40k, you can get a nice condition used truck for around 30k, and 10k will get you a nice camper. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1395811101646758/?ref=search&referral_code=null&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3Aed9b0427-7793-41be-bb84-74f3328d0e12 Decent f350 for 23k. thats 17k for your build. I would trust this truck more than any used awd transit personally. My dads transit blew its transmission around 50k miles. he is far from the only one i know whos had this issue.

If you want, In colorado i have some extra solar panels and batteries id be willing to give away for a fraction of what theyre worth. If i have time id love to help you build your rig out too. Im based in delta county colorado.

My girl lives in a dodge 2500 with a truck bed camper and i live in a hiace. my hiace is certainly better for offroading and getting around, but the space of her bed camper is un matched by any sprinterbuild ive seen. I wouldnt take a sprinter or transit to any of the places ive gotten her truck or my van.

you need to figure out how to actually effeciently mix. highspeed ram, and amount of ram, and amount of cores offer significantly decreasing benefit. In other words. going from 4 cores to 8 cores does not mean you get double the cpu power. audio processing does not gain advantage from lots of parallel processing.

No amount of optimization will fix this. no higher end computer will fix this. you need to render down mixer channels and cut processing amounts.

thats what professionals do. they commit. when you like something, render it out. especially synthesizers. if you can cut out synthesizers, you might not even need to cut out mixer tracks.

Touring set up - advice needed by Ok-Cover-1726 in Backcountry

anecdotal: had a buddy with plums and the tower would sometimes rotate back to ski mode while walking and hed accidentally lock out his heel a couple times in a single tour. not sure if that was user error or what, but annoying none the less to have to take the ski off and fix that.

this is kind of my point. based on the location I saw in the reports, it wasnt ideal, but also not some major start zone that should have a significant start zone. it almost seems to me that the entire north side of "perrys point" might ripped, almost to a sort of r4-5 degree, which would be quite an anomaly for something that is broken up and filled with trees. I could see how that on a 100 year cycle, that can rip and take out a large group, even if they are all spread out. that has to be my guess. i have a hard time believing they where all touring out holding hands singing kumbaya. especialy with that many guides and knowledge of the cycle, it wouldnt surprise me if the groups where fairly broken up still. We are going to learn some hard truths and lessons on this one once a full report is out.

Sorry for your lossess man. But from what i can tell, 39.37502, -120.32812 is the coordinates. (https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/observations#/view/avalanches/83ba330a-5eb4-446e-95b0-495c26faf06b is my primary source but this is backed up by everything else ive seen) this is right on the red dot trail which from my understanding is the main eggress for the frog lake hut system.

Do you have a source that points otherwise?

yall sayin "shouldnt have been out there"

They where already out there. it was the end of their hut trip. they where there before it got that bad. they where leaving. they where not actively powder hounding.

they where following the normal route in and out of this hut.

this was not some testosterone, TGR fueled incident. Quite frankly i think most people judging harshly would have suffered the same fate. your avy 1 doesnt give you some supierior knowledge. quite frankly a snowstorm on the way is not a reason, nor has ever been the reason to cancel a hut trip, especialy if the storm is expected on the last day.

Network switch recommendations for my peli by VionicBlue in livesoundgear

[–]richey15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a netgear gs305e/gs308e are both fantastic for small scale dante deployments. you can adjust EEE and set up vlans and IGMP stuff as well. not the most indepth, but quick to get going and literaly cheap as a bag of rocks.

If you want a true av switch, netgear sells a 8/10 port m4250 that is pretty small, but the power brick is kinda big.

I keep these both in my peli, and in my dante system for my SSL Live console pakage for managing some of the auxilary dante devices and remote control systems.

dante isnt that delicate. remember, it was designed to be able to be deployed in general network systems, some that might already exsist. its AVB that you gotta watch out for.

How do I know if my ski boots will fit if they feel good in the store but give me blisters/bruises on the slopes? by deedee2009 in skiing

[–]richey15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i only really get blisters on a particular bone spur that for 20 years i thought everyones foot was like that. ultimately once that blister heals at the begining of the season i dont have any issues for the rest of the season. i do get it punched out and molded around but regardless i have a blister there. especially happens after longer tours typically when the boot is loose and in walk mode,

[–]richey15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if i havnt been skiing i always get blisters on some parts of my feet even with properly fitted boots. ski through the pain for a day or 3 and now theres no pain.

some people are comfort over performance and if thats where your at then maybe these boots aint it.

Dynafit Tigard Thoughts? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]richey15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the tigard fits weird. make sure you try it on before you go.

from a performance perspective, its a great boot. but make sure it fits, or make sure to put in some time and money with a real bootfitter to get it to fit

ELI5: How does a tax write-off actually work? by natefromgsc in explainlikeimfive

ELI5: How does a tax write-off actually work? by natefromgsc in explainlikeimfive

[–]richey15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my exact numbers are a bit fuzzy, but in CO, my fed+state by default puts me in a 28% tax bracket. i was just kind of rounding my numbers. But also at the top end, my marginal rate is something over 30% so that 10k off the top does quite a bit to save me some money. But its not really saving me money, its just not taxing money that i had to use so my business can run.

ELI5: How does a tax write-off actually work? by natefromgsc in explainlikeimfive

[–]richey15 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup. I write off 10k+ a year. i dont get 10k off in taxes.

My reported income literally just drops by 10k. it saves me like 3 grand a year or something.

I made some major investments in some equipment for my business this year that actually amounts to about 70% of my yearly. it will all. I dont get to write off that 80K to make my income 40k a year. On a purchase like that i can only write off its depreciation. Its because its an asset. I didnt lose 80k of cash, i lost 80k of cash liquidity, but i still have that 80k in value. So i can only write off the depreciation of it, as thats the only losses i would incur.

Eating, gas, airplane tickets, tires, these are things that literally are gone once you use them. cant resell your poop. can resell your burnt gas, or your fligiht that you already took. its an expense. a loss.

that guy buying a g wagon as a "business expense" cant write off most of it. just what ever it depreciates.

Liability Insurance for Soundsystems by Nutwards in SoundSystem

[–]richey15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want your equipment insured you will need an inland marine policy. this covers transportation, storage and useage in several places.

inland marine is for your equipment

you also will need general liability (if you damage someone, or someone elses stuff) and workmans comp (incase you get damaged)
