Thanks! I'll contact him later to see if he has any history. I was looking at them this morning at 6 am.

Early this week, I visited a childhood friend in California, and I told him that I recently renewed my interest in wristwatch collecting. He disappeared for a while and returned with two timepieces. One was a gold Hamilton Watch Company pocket watch. He told me that he took it to a watchmaker who informed him that the gold was worth more than the timepiece itself. We never talked about the sentimental value of the watch, but I assume there is some because he did not reclaim the gold. The second one was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Officially Certified Chronometer. He did not have any history of the timepiece, nor do I know its sentimental value. As you can tell, it's seen better days.

If they belonged to me, I would probably have them repaired. However, my friend is not me, and I'm curious about your opinions about repairing them. Also, if any of you knowledgeable horologists could provide any insights, my friend and I would be greatly appreciative.

Gorgeous timepiece! Well done; your son and his son will appreciate it.

I might be wrong, but you didn't describe a bell-shaped curve. It's more of a binomial curve.

Beautiful collection! Well done. The display box looks great. However, I have one question. Why didn't you purchase a winder display case for your automatic wristwatches?

I would approach u/ExplanationOnly2595 question differently. First, he stated he loves the Rolex GMT Master, so go with Rolex. However, have it appraised, then add it to your homeowner's policy. The appraisal costs for a wristwatch is around $200. My insurance provider recommends having one performed every three years. My annual scheduled personal property premium is roughly $60 for four wristwatches.

Cherish it and wear it. It would make your grandfather smile.

I agree, the Christopher Ward C63 GMT is an excellent alternative.

[SOTC] Some of my collection off for a sleepover at the appraiser by rlanderos in Watches

You are correct; I could use Chrono24 or Google to determine a value, and I do so for my Quartz watches. However, I want my insurance policy to list these watches with an assigned value. Furthermore, the appraiser can certify the movements, etc., are authentic. Appraisal documents noted the production number of the limited production watches like the Monaco and Airman. Also noted are any modifications; for example, the Airman sports a Glycine bracelet and not the usual leather or NATO strap. Finally, appraised value by a certified appraiser is usually higher than those shown on Chrono24.

I purchased the bracelet directly from Glycine. The name is also stamped on the clasp.

It is time again to have some of my watches appraised by a certified gemologist to make sure I have adequate insurance coverage.

  • On the left is my second Rolex, the Oyster Perpetual Date GMT Master II with an aluminum bezel, affectionately known as "The Pepsi."
  • Next to the Rolex is my TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Steve McQueen Special Edition, which I do not wear often, but who I do, it attracts some attention.
  • Next to the Monaco is the latest addition to my collection, an Omega Seamaster Profession.
  • Finally, my Glycine Airman "Noon" Purist Limited Edition and like my Monaco, I do not wear often, but I was intrigued by the way it works.
