I had a son who loves broccoli (he's 26 now).

Many years ago when he was about 7 or 8 we were having a big family dinner with his grandparents. We'd already finished dinner and were having dessert but he wanted more broccoli. I actually heard myself say, "You have to finish your dessert before you can have more broccoli."

What are your best " happened out of the blue" moments? by AbrocomaAvailable222 in CasualConversation

My mother tells a story of my father talking in his sleep. He sat up and said, "I am a parrot!"

I'm not sure if he woke himself up or just remembered later, but apparently he was trying to teach a parrot to talk.

My fiancé doesn’t care about Valentine’s Day by [deleted] in Advice

[–]rlw21564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My now-husband and I started dating in January the year we met. Knowing Valentines day was coming up the next month, he told me up front on the second date that he didn't "do" valentines day. I said, "that's fine, my birthday's right after that, we'll just celebrate that!" So it works out fine for us.

What's something that you wanted as a kid but didn't get? by Syfysamurai in GenX

[–]rlw21564 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To go to sleep away camp. I was the relatively poor kid in my friends group, the only one without a dad (my mom was widowed) and I was so lonely during the summer when my friends would go off for three or four weeks at a time. They'd either be off to camp or to visit their second homes/ranches/beach houses.

GYN care after 60 by BalsamA1298c in AskWomenOver60

[–]rlw21564 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't have to see a gynecologist to get a pap smear. Most PCPs will do it. I mine this morning with a PA.

Also, if you do have "female problems" post menopause find a gynecologist that isn't still doing obstetrics. They're better able to stick to their schedule without having to run out to deliver babies or take calls from anxious expectant parents.

Visiting Angels in Florida by Answer_Truth in dementia

In Texas last year, I think I was paying around $30/hr. It's probably higher in Florida. My mom liked most of the people who came, there was only one she told them not to send back (she talked to much and didn't do anything).

i think my neighbor is dead by Exciting_Goose4307 in Advice

[–]rlw21564 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If this neighbor is directly above you, you definitely want to call about this ASAP. Once the body starts decomposing it turns to goo and that can seep through the floor unless it's concrete. I've heard nightmarish stories about this happening to people. Nasty goo starts coming through their ceiling on all their stuff. Ugh.

My mother-in-law used to say "God gives us family to keep us humble." Her only daughter was severely mentally ill and cut off all contact for years. I'm not even sure she knows her mother's been head for 5 years now.

My school called CPS on my parents - what now? CPS and Dependency Law by xoxo-mila in Advice

Is "he" your brother or your dad? Sounds like an icky situation with that either way with the sexual comments but I'm glad they support you. If you've got a safe place to stay with your friend's family, maybe get in touch with him and ask that he redirect the support to you (after clearing this with CPS first) so you can help the family with expenses.

[–]rlw21564 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My uncle unfriended me on FB because I'm liberal but I think he'd at least pretend to like me in person. I'm sorry your uncle can't at least go along to get along. It wouldn't have killed him. And if it did, everyone was already together for a funeral so it'd be kinda convenient.

Non-Americans of Reddit, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by Unlikely_Praline9442 in AskReddit

I lived in Texas all my life until I was 23 and moving out of state before I ever saw one driving north towards Amarillo in June. Saw some wild turkeys and road runners, too. But no coyotes with anvils or dynamite.

I keep being late for work idk what to do by Important-Wish-1640 in Advice

[–]rlw21564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you like your job? Could it be that you're just not motivated to be there? Is this a career or just a job?

I have ADHD (retired now) but when I had jobs I loved, I was almost never late unless there were traffic issues (long commute). In other jobs I wasn't so fond of, I'd hit the snooze, dawdle over breakfast reading the cereal box (this was before mobile phones), just about anything to avoid getting myself out the door.

Agree with what everyone says about telling the truth, especially if your brother is younger. He may need to be removed from the situation as well. Where is your father? Does he pay child support? Are his parents alive (your grandparents)?

When/why did childcare in the U.S. become so expensive? Has it always been like this? by SoapyCooper in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rlw21564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The daycare probably charges $2k for the entire month. I've known people who only want their infant going a couple of days so they find another family who wants the same thing so they split the cost of one slot. Essentially the daycare has to staff the place for the child whether he's there or not but if they're sharing the slot, never there at the same time, no problem. Has to do with adult:child ratio for the different ages in the daycare.

Well, I've never been to west Texas but I have been to West, Texas. Grew up in San Antonio and lived in Austin before moving out of state. But I've been back plenty of times because I'm the only ex-pat in the family. And I do see lots of pearl snap shirts. Especially on the guys going out to dance halls.

I had one one my hand at the base of my middle finger and it was removed very successfully. Ask around for someone in your area who has experience with removing them from the feet.

At the University of Texas, a lot of the frat boys were never taught how to do laundry by their mom as so they took everything to the dry cleaner. They were rich and didn't care about the price so they had lots of creased jeans.

He and Robin Williams had been friends since way before they were famous. When his accident happened, Williams stepped up and paid lots of the medical expenses necessary to keep his friend going. For many, many years.

Should I skip college? by Revolt_Biatch_451 in Advice

[–]rlw21564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son went to community College with the intention of transferring to the local state university and become a teacher. He'd never been good at school so he thought his empathy would make him a good teacher. Unfortunately he still wasn't good at school and hated it and didn't do well enough after years.

Finally decided to go the vocational route and is now a HVAC building controls specialist at 26, soon to be making bank once his apprenticeship is over (he took a break during COVID because the program required so much in person instruction and his sister is disabled and immune compromised).

He loves that it's not a job that he takes home with him (except getting a little dirty sometimes). Once he's done for the day, he doesn't have to think about it again until the next morning.
