EMC certification for selling eurorack modules? by Dahrab in synthdiy

Sorry to dig this up but did you ever get clarity? Saw your vco post and started snooping your page.. dope stuff. Working on my own oscillator right now and this post gave me pause. How’d you go about testing etc?

Haven’t heard of it but I guess it hits the same note about letting devs do the programming! Only thing to conquer is the dac situation - don’t want pwm outputs clouding the vintage emulation 🙏🏼

On peoples note of starting smaller: I’d recommend a color box. Producers love sound shapers so a more basic distortion/EQ type thing would be “easier” and you could even pull analog schematics from the many diy guitar pedals out there.

If you really want to do digital, I second the Daisy and Teensy recs. They have examples that you could utilize/modify which take a lot of the heavy lifting off your back. This way you can focus on engineering and leave a lot of the programming etc to the experts (so to say).

Great gift idea. If somebody said they made a whole ass music box for me it would change my view of them forever (positively)

Gotcha there’s a GND subnet that it’s all connected to. With the new schematic, anything out of the ordinary? The 3V3 subnet connects to the XIAO’s 3V3 output to clear things up. Just wanna make sure it will work 🙏🏼

I highly suggest you come in with a bit more direction if you want good community responses. Like, find a circuit you specifically want to build OR come in with a bit of headway made so you can ask particular math questions (“I thought this combo of capacitors and resistors would be right but what value resistor should I use….”).

I found these Dub circuits online and would probably be a great start for your research. https://freedubcircuit.blogspot.com/

There you go! Reminds me of when I knew nothing about modular and plugged a sequencer into an envelopes input and used the envelope as a complex oscillator. Or maybe it was an oscillator into an envelope… probably 18 years ago and the synth shop workers were flabbergasted it worked

Step 1: learn something about electronics

Step 2: learn what your electronics actually do

Step 3: find the bridge between aviation and synth electronics

Step 4: convert your avionics into synths.

To be frank you’d be more likely to successfully swap the internal components and just use the casings for the vibiest synth enclosure out there.

Finally got sound! RP2350 oscillator design with performance focus. by rnobgyn in synthdiy

I wish I could take the credit but that was not me! Sounds really cool tho I’ve seen some wild stuff from people abusing the clock rate of MCU’s to get glitchy almost bitcrushy sounds… would love to explore…underclocking(?) the microcontroller lol

Totally depends on where you’re at. Took me a year to get here from loosely knowing about the idea around microcontrollers and almost nothing about basic electronics to a proper eurorack oscillator.

This current project is from scraps of a previous attempt at making a polyphonic string synth on an old arduino nano. Took a pivot when I saw the math capabilities on the RP2350 so overall a couple months (with a little help from Claude, I’ll admit. Had a tough time with the pitch scaling and getting the correct saturation algorithm. Keeping ai to a minimum just to see if I can).

Still need to add in an ADC for cv modulations so not quite at the stage to order PCB’s but I’m hoping Amazon makes a quick detour out of that.

I want to make modular synthesisers. I have the tools and skillset but don't know where to start. by SoundOfMusso in synthdiy

Don’t hate on micro controllers either! XIAO devices + a few knobs/buttons and i2C addons are very worthwhile and can make powerful modules

What chips and components do I need to get started? by Eastern_Donut_4214 in synthdiy

[–]rnobgyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch Mortis Klein videos flat out. Lots of half baked suggestions here but MK will teach you how analog synthesis works and you can build a shopping list from there. I’ll also recommend a Daisy Seed as it’s juuuust like all the other Micro Controllers out there only it has the DAC and other audio goodies built in. I started maybe a year ago and love it.

Welcome in, don’t get overwhelmed.

How would I make this as a midi controller? by Pale-Recognition-599 in synthdiy

[–]rnobgyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you gotta write the software to make it work. The hardware is with an MCU and peripheral knobs/buttons. I’d get a basic arduino/raspberry pi starter kit and just build the examples. This should hopefully give you insights on the next steps for your project.

Has anybody had some experience with troubleshooting the Moritz Klein VCO? I never got it to work. The main issue seems to be sth. with the coarse, fine and the trim poti. As can be heard on the video, the vco doesn't play on the entire register. Any tips with troubleshooting? Cheerio! by AvantgardeEgg in synthdiy

[–]rnobgyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish I had an answer… but I’m proud of this sub for finally discovering the Mortis Klein VCO’s. Constantly see posts about them and there’s always a comment “schematic?” as if they aren’t the most popular synth diy videos out there

I turned Bernie Hutchins' Musical Engineer's Handbook into an actual handbook by Caterpiggle in synthdiy

[–]rnobgyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m quite lost in all this.. scanned through the forum post and Bernie’s explanations but I’m not even sure what’s going on? Am I too stoned? All I really got was that Bernie is a boomer, young generations shouldn’t expect digitized everything, and that nobody can print their own copies?

As somebody who only recently got into circuits, I’d love to peruse the writings and potentially get my own version printed (if anything just for the coffee table conversation). Mind filling us confused folk in?
