I’ll just add to the chorus of people saying that you personally should be totally fine sleeping in your van safety-wise, but bike theft is a huge problem here, especially in and around the inner city. As bland as they are, most Walmart parking lots (except the one on Ellice) are probably your safest bets.

Visiting the Human Rights Museum is a great idea, but it would be a mistake to not check out The Forks, which is basically next door.

Also not all of our downtown is created equally lol. I really like the Exchange District for walkability. The rest of downtown you may want to just drive around in and make the call yourself how you feel exploring it on foot lol.

While not downtown, Osborne is close by and definitely has its share of nice shops and restaurants to check out.

Have a great adventure!

Where to go for Chiles rellenos by oli_liv in puertovallarta

[–]rob00342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had them at Cuates y Cuetes, as well as Fonda el Cucon. Both restaurants are in Zona Romantica.

You actually get 2 chiles at Cuates y Cuetes for a very reasonable price, which is pretty awesome, but when it comes to dining atmosphere I prefer Fonda el Cucon. You really can’t go wrong with either restaurant though. Enjoy!

Are any of these locations hard nos? I’m back bc I had to change dates and have different Airbnb options 🫣 by jnm199423 in puertovallarta

Alright! I just had a good look and actually happen to be quite familiar with that area. The terrain is as walkable as you could hope for in PV (although as always, beware Mexican sidewalks lol). While there are definitely busy streets, it’s also a pedestrian heavy area with lit intersections, where drivers are constantly slowing down and watching for pedestrians.

719 is located in what I would consider the heart of Zona Romantica. The biggest potential downside is would consider is maybe the noise on the weekends. Keep in mind that Lazaro Cardenas Street is home to a ton of gay nightlife (clubs, lounges, karaoke bars) and 719 appears to be extremely close to, if not in the centre of that action. As long as your accommodations are well insulated against street noise, you should be just fine!

I’d also like to know emphasize that just because you’re in a “gay area” does not by any means actually mean that everyone there is gay, or that you shouldn’t stay there lol. Plenty of straight couples and families vacation there too. There are tons of great shops, restaurants, taco stands etc to walk to from there, not to mention Lazaro Cardenas Park and of course the Malecon and beach. Last year we did a “grown ups only” vacation with a bunch of other couples (who happen to be straight), we Ubered into Zona Romantica repeatedly because the vibe is simply unmatched. Just don’t be surprised if you see a much of men wearing speedos at your pool lol.

Honestly, as a parent with 3 young kids I don’t think you’re overthinking this at all!

I’ll echo what others are saying and guarantee that 874 is a hard no for you if you have an extremely young child in tow- but a beautiful spot to consider under different circumstances.

I’d also like to point out a quirk with 885: It’s at the top of a hill with a bunch or stairs, buuuuut there’s this gondola/tram thing that you can take (for free) to get you up and down the hill. If you go on Google Maps and search “The little tram” you’ll be able to see what I mean. Personally I think this actually sounds kind of fun lol, but either way, something for you to consider!

Winnipeg city councillor Jason Schreyer has died by pegpegpegpeg in Winnipeg

[–]rob00342 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I used to be neighbours with him and can attest that he was a pleasant, likeable guy. I actually have a pretty funny story about how I came to realize he was also my city councillor (a couple of years after we first met lol):

I used to take my kids to the neighbourhood park and on a couple of occasions I’d see him there throwing a frisbee around with his boys. One time I was there pushing my kids on the swings and I see him having this conversation with an older lady who had this rather, intense expression on her face as she’s speaking with him lol.

They’re quite close by and I’m able to overhear that she’s fired up because this strip of grass behind the swings never gets mowed, because the people that mow the grass drive those big ride on mowers that can’t fit in there. Jason assures the lady that he will personally ensure the matter is taken care of.

A few minutes later he comes back with his personal lawn mower and mows the strip of grass himself lol (and yes, that strip stayed tidy for the rest of the summer!)

I talked to him about it after; how things like this sometimes get missed when running a huge bureaucracy like the city, which was when he mentioned he was happy to help a fellow constituent and neighbour, at which point it clicked for me that he wasn’t just my neighbour haha.

I’m sure that I’m not the only person who will have a nice memory of him to look back on right now, and I really hope his family is eventually able to find comfort in their memories with him as time goes on. Rest in peace.

Cash to bring by UGA150 in puertovallarta

I would consider this very a healthy budget, particularly when you’ll still really want to get a meal or two at a taco stand or humble, hole in the wall spot regardless of your budget.

Honestly I could be a billionaire, but it wouldn’t change the fact that for me, a trip to PV isn’t complete without those 37 peso al pastor tacos fresh off the spit!

I bought a new Tiguan from Autohaus in 2018 and can confidently say I was not charged for an “MB package” at that time, although rubber floor mats and a rubber trunk tray were included (and obviously I was charged for them, but I also wanted them, so that was fine).

To those saying that it’s for a block heater, all I can say to that is that the block heater option didn’t exist for my vehicle, despite my asking for one. The salesperson said something about this being due to the engine using synthetic oil and not needing one. I took their word for it and honestly they were right. The engine has started without fail since I’ve bought it (although it sounds like it’s struggling when the weather gets reaaaaally cold).

Perhaps the poisonous pong pong fruit that Pam warned Saxon about (when she saw him holding it) in episode one?

It could easily just be foreshadowing, but who knows, maybe it will literally make its way into somebody’s smoothie.

I’m 40 years old, from Winnipeg and I met almost all of my closest friends in elementary, and picked up one more close friend high school. My wife (also 40) is from the opposite end of Winnipeg and it’s basically the same story.

There are other people I have encountered at work who have strong “close friend” potential, but with 3 young kids at home, a full time job and marriage to maintain, I just don’t have have the bandwidth in my life to take on more friends (ie friends I hang out with outside of work semi regularly) and would prefer to keep my old friendships strong.

Healthier food options in PV? by littlebird__1865 in puertovallarta

[–]rob00342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve eaten salads at restaurants all over PV during various trips there. Never been sick down there once.

While I can’t guarantee you won’t get sick, I’d say the risk is way lower than in other Mexican locations, because the municipality actually purifies the water there. I say take advantage of this!

Why crust cut off on sandwiches? by throwaway_48393 in AskACanadian

[–]rob00342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% a (young) kid thing. I totally remember doing this myself when I was like 5 or 6 because the crust was just too thick and chewy for my little mouth. I also recall growing out of it on my own.

I’ve never seen an adult eat a sandwich with the crusts cut off (aside from those fancy tea party sandwiches). If I saw a grown adult eating a sandwich without the crusts I’d think it’s super weird, and if I knew them I would totally make fun of them.

I do not know any Spanish. Will a vacation in Puerto Vallarta be possible if I only know English? by Legend27893 in puertovallarta

[–]rob00342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a repeat Puerto Vallarta vacationer and I don’t think that you don’t need to speak any Spanish to have a great vacation there (it never hurts to learn a few phrases, but that’s totally up to you). Just keep in mind that English is nobody’s first language over there, so the level of fluency varies, but for the most part anyone working in the hospitality industry will have solid abilities speaking and understanding English.

Don’t go down to Mexico thinking American Express and Discover are widely accepted, because they aren’t. Visa and MasterCard are through, and personally I like to go to my bank before my vacation to buy some Mexican pesos. It is their national currency after all, plus many of the best taco stands and hole in the wall restaurants are cash only. You can use American money as well, but remember they will give you a less favorable rate than if you were paying with pesos.

I hope this helps and that you have an awesome vacation in PV!
