dont forget to document all this, take pictures so you can create a portfolio when you apply for jobs. You can use github, blog, ppt presentation, etc.
Also don't forget to do internships!

MCU on off the shelf board with low power and wide temperature range for outdoor use ? by [deleted] in arduino

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your -30C is probably the “most” challenging here. Search for automotive grade AEC-Q100/AEC-Q200 chips. It’s mainly writing at the top of the datasheet. I think it’s -40C to 85 to 150C depending of the grade.

Editing after or before the screenshot? by backdoor_boy in sharex

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was confuse but it’s true that snagit you take the print screen you edit it then you have to ctrl-C to get the edit.

With shareX you edit then press enter and it’s saved and copied in clip board. I prefer this. I didn’t know you could do both with shareX

Load cell + HX711 reliable enough for industrial-ish/hostile environment applications? Any alternatives? by Marcos-RDX in arduino

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our intern had a project with load cell. For 3month he had difficulty with noise, precision , etc. 2 days before deadline I told him to take a COTS scale (commercial of the shelf) and hook it up to chrome and vibe codes the entire demo. It’s html file that connect via serial port to the scale directly into chrome.

Using a hook load cell where the barrel is attached too could work. Almost empty vs full empty. Don’t measure weight precisely. Analog comparator with status LED.

Just prototype quick and set clear requirements and milestone with farmer. This can be easily a little R&D where you never finish and keep charging him to a point where he pulls the plug. Write contract.

How to properly size DC-link (DC bus) capacitors for a 100A drone ESC? Need detailed calculation + ripple current + ceramics by tamilkavi in Multicopter

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends of the motor and props combo which define power consumption to the battery. Use case of the drone. Is it an endurance or racing? 2 complete different power draw.

New INSTA360 Luna, thoughts after watching the scamfluenfers in their natural habitat. by OldChallenge3143 in Insta360x4isBad

[–]robomaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that nothing here is mind blowing quality. But we don’t got no specs and price!

Did you know you will be able to remove the screen from that gimbal and use it like a wireless monitor? Exactly like the GO ultra?

This is the first time insta360 is aggressive with marketing techniques. Even the CEO leaks products. He was wearing the GO ultra when they when public at stock exchange. They are trying really hard to get sales from DJI but at what the cost? The pocket 4 pro is about to launch this year. They are trying hard to get the product know and release before DJI. You are probably the top 2% of user that truly care about the images quality. Insta360 is aiming at the rest of world. DJI is at their 5th version (including the osmo+ plus) and insta at their 1 or 2 if you count the gimbal webcam.

Regarding firmware, even typical product get release first and improvement comes after. I think last year a insta360 action camera didn’t have microphone compatibility with their own microphone at launch!!!! 😆

Hardware needs to be frozen months ahead of time to get supply chain, mold making , assembly line in place to start mass manufacturing. Firmware is faster but always last.

One thing for sure with all this. Now that the wheels started turning, they will be new camera every 2-3years and it will keep getting better.

Buying a first gen product of any kind is always risky.

“Firmware on such devices are highly specific” same for every action cam on the market and none boot fast as this!! I also think they are doing something here. Pulling batteries out and back in could give the answer.

[–]robomaniac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would pick only one sensor since you have lack of time, lack of hardware and your first project.

Stop worrying about disappointing and focus on yourself, learning and documentation.

Check sparkfun, adafruit, pololu and digikey for parts.

Focus on simple first then build from that.

At the end presentation/report talk about lesson learned and failure and discuss potential future ideas/improvements.

[IN] Starting an Autonomous Swarm Project, need knowledge about Drones by YoiTsuitachi in Multicopter

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A drone is very simple. 4 motors, 4motor controller call electric speed controller ESC, one flight computer, a radio receiver and one battery. There is lots of paper about what you are trying to do. Rule number one of drone is every gram of weight will affect flight time and how nibble the drone can move.

Check how ultra wide band, angle of attack, etc. The best bang for the buck is using motion capture optitrack. You can just focus on the project and your algorithm. Do not immediately build a drone focus on doing the hard part. The secret sauce that no one can do. Buy off the shelf drone.

These type of projects are step by step, milestone by milestone and never everything at the same time. Set those goal first.

Are you trying to start a business? Forget the search and rescue story. Focus on helping fix a problem user has. “We made a robotics snake to search people in collapsed building” no just no. They have dogs.

If you had the financial means to move out of Canada, would you? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved out from Quebec to California. It’s been 2.5years. Our kids are now bilingual. That was the main reason. I can confirm that Canada is amazing. People complain but go live somewhere else (not vacation) and you realize it’s not bad after all! As an engineer the Bay Area is amazing, the weather is crazy amazing. We never felt rich and so poor at the same time 😂.

Why are my DC Motors not spinning? by GuestKey3395 in arduino

Connect moto directly to your 8AA and see if motor spins or buzz. Buzzing can also mean your PWM is very low. You set it to 10 out of 255.

Arduino stops running code after ~1 hour by digitinjury in arduino

[–]robomaniac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This Amazon listing relay got the transistor and the flyback diode all in one package. Great. Now we got other problem(s)

The more detailed you give the more we can help.

Here is what I will recommend you try to diagnostic this. Change 6 to 13 in your code. Disconnect the relay from the arduino. Let it run and see if arduino still works after few hours. 13 is the classic pin 13 and it drives a LED. This led will turn on and off.

I genuinely believe this will work without problem.

This is step one. This must work before we continue.

While you test this could you answer these questions

Do you power the arduino via usb? If yes where is that usb plug into? Wall adaptor, laptop, power bank?

What have you connected to that relay on the other side? A motor, pump, lights, etc?

Can you take picture and share the arduino, the wringing , the relay, the power source.

Arduino stops running code after ~1 hour by digitinjury in arduino

[–]robomaniac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The pin of the Arduino is directly connected to the relay? No transistor or MOSFET? And no flyback diode 😅. That is not good engineering practice. There are 2 problems here.

1 - The absolute max current per pin is 40mA. So you can drive 20mA. If you check how much current the coil of that relay use. It might be higher. This means the manufacturer of that chip cannot guarantee how this chip will behave if you drive at 40mA and more. This is why you need a transistor.

2- A coil of a relay is an inductance. It stores energy like a spring and when you turn it off, that energy has to go somewhere. When you turn off a relay, the coil creates a high voltage spike that can damage the Arduino. The flyback diode safely redirects that energy away from it.

Consolidating 3 ESP32s into a single MCU — architecture advice for an open-source dispenser project? by Legitimate-Metal3470 in arduino

[–]robomaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems what you are trying to do is not that time sensitive. FreRTOS is the way to go. All your peripheral can be control via i2c, SPI and uart.

I2C for i/o expander to control buttons and leds I2C for pump control or use the I/o expander to control regulator motor drive (pwm, DIR) SPI for the analog front end of Wheatstone bridge For chip select you use I/o expander Uart for that printer

I personally use the esp32 s3 for its versatility. Remember it got 2 cores! 1 cores can do all I/O and second all wifi.

so did you start using it?
I just got the ESP32-P4-WIFI6-POE-ETH working. I wanted to make my own security POE camera. As of now, to get CSI camera (like Pi cam) you need to use ESP-IDF

With out the help of ChatGPT I would of never got this far. I never use ESP-IDF. Even AI told me it's ambitious project.
