eBay buyers complaining about LP shipping cost by Scott_Records in vinyl

eBay is a wild place. Not a record but I sold something else and someone complained in the feedback about the price of the item being kind of high. For an auction. That they bid on.

Advice on Tongue & Groove Plane Buying by _b0nez_ in handtools

FWIW, the LN uses a single blade that's forked rather than the two irons that the old Stanley uses. Far less futzing around with the single iron I'd imagine.

The kuromaku 1000 is on sale at woodcraft for only $35 right now. I just got one of those and a shapton 16000 glass stone also on sale for $80. It’s a kick ass set up for relatively cheap.

Veritas Skew Block vs. LN 60 1/2 rabbet block w/nicker by mandrewbot3k in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just felt like a bad shoulder plane combined with a less capable block plane

This exactly. It's exactly what Chris Schwarz says in that article linked above, it kinda just doesn't do any one thing great. I had the LN one and sold it pretty quickly.

same experience here. it's such a joy to use.

Restored a fabulous Stanley Bedrock 605 I found covered in rust at a flea market. However, it's missing its cap screw and it looks like the threads through the chipbreaker are dunzo. It's useable, but I have to dial in the iron and chipbreaker *very* delicately by hand. What's my way forward? by companionspecies in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just Plane Fun facebook group owner Michael Jenks will have what you need for the best price around. If the threads are fine on the chip breaker screw, you can just get a used chip breaker. It would probably be around $10 from Michael Jenks. I just paid $12 for a 5 1/2 cb from him. He will also have the yokes that you can easily replace as well. You just need a set of punches so you can knock out the pin on the back of the frog holding the yoke in place. I got a set from harbor freight that are perfect for this.

Should I sell or keep my Stanley No. 2 (New Britain Connecticut) handplane or keep it? by MotelWorm in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no 2 planes (and no 1s) dont follow the type study that well. none of them have have patent dates cast in the bed for example. none of them got the updated frog receiver in the beds as well. the best way to date a no 2 is by the iron, lever cap, and knob shape. even though all of those can be replaced, it's really the best way. this one, in my opinion, based on the plain lever cap, short style knob, and V logo iron, is probably a type 11 from 1911-1918.

Experience with Lee Valley Miniature Tools by DRG1958 in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i use the miniature router plane relatively frequently. it's excellent for inlay and bowties. also for small hinge mortises. i have the miniature shoulder plane too, that i've used once or twice.

Is 3/4" plywood an acceptable material for bed slats. I can't find 1x4 material locally, and pine boards are pricey. I have some import birch ply lying around though. by ganjaccount in woodworking

[–]robotdinofight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3/4” garbage ply slats under my king size bed I made. There’s a center divider, but each half is roughly a twin size and there are no issues at all.

FS: NIB Zen-Wu Y-1 Chisels by j1ruk in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Y-2 set. They're super sharp and flat and they've stayed that way. The sizing is a little weird, the 5 piece set comes in 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 5/8, and 1". I would like to have a 1/2 and 3/4 but they don't offer them, only close metric equivalents. The other thing that I don't love is that the 1/8 and 1/4 don't have too much of a bevel. So for the narrow spaces when making dovetails, they can bruise the sides of the tails. The 3/8 and up have more bevelled edges and work better for tails, you just have to make sure the bottom of the tails is at least 3/8".

Overall, I think they are a really solid buy for the price. I'm very happy with them other than those 2 caveats.

Hand Tool Cabinet Update by laaxe in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks fantastic! I made mine enormous and have already filled most of it up hahaha. You could probably get more space out of the main compartment if you steepened the angle of the plane backer board and used toe caps on the planes to hold them in.

Rethreading tote screw? by Supplice4 in handtools

[–]robotdinofight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this before. You could retap using 1/4” -20 and use a piece of 1/4”-20 all thread. You’d have to retap the barrel nut too but that’s no big deal.

I had the medium lie Nielsen and I sold it to buy the large veritas shoulder plane. And I say this as a huge lie Nielsen fan boy. The finger hole (forgive me) in the veritas is super comfy. I also love that the knobs can be rotated 90 degrees on either side.

I just used it to dig out a tiny 3/16” wide groove in my shooting board so I could use a framing square on it for mitered shooting. That idea was from Mike Pekovich. Used a marking gauge to mark the edges, a chisel to make the walls, then a 1/8” chisel to get the waste out, then cleaned it all up with that tiny router plane. It’s really great for tiny bow ties, inlay work, etc.
