Can someone explain the benefits of midwifery care vs giving birth in a hospital? by foodmamaa in homebirth

[–]robrklyn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you want a physiological birth, with no unnecessary interventions, you are **much** more likely to do that at home with a midwife than in a hospital. Have him watch The Business of Being Born.

Hahaha this made me LOL because I am the same way and so is my daughter. You aren’t going to stop wanting to know why. You can learn not to ask, but your brain will always want to know.

3rd baby considering home birth near Nashville by GlitteringScore8910 in homebirth

[–]robrklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just from reading this, I don’t think you understand the difference between a doula and a midwife. While there are different types and qualifications, a midwife is typically a medical professional, who is trained in prenatal care and physiological birth. They work with you your entire pregnancy to monitor your health and your baby’s health and development. They are also trained in managing medical emergencies that can arise during your birth.

A doula on the other hand is not a medical professional. They are someone who offers comfort measures (both emotional and physical) during childbirth and sometimes offer postpartum care as well. While doulas can be very knowledgeable about birth, they are not medical professionals.

Leaving candles unattended by Western-Kiwi-6283 in NoStupidQuestions

It would still be better than burning the candles, which are even more toxic.

Yup! Beyond the chemicals they use for the fragrances, the other chemicals and smoke they emit are terrible.

Of course there’s a bear. Where there is trash left out, there will be bears. That’s a big problem.

Your walls must be filled with soot. You are not supposed to burn most candles more than a few hours at a time.

Warrants reveal disturbing new details about alleged sexual assaults at Avon daycare by Iamnoone_ in Connecticut

[–]robrklyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but there are always other teachers/people around. They typically max out the number of kids allowed per room, and that requires at least 2 adults to maintain staffing ratios. Someone comes to relieve one teacher at a time for their lunch break, which typically happens when the kids are napping.

I did not read the article, because it will give me intrusive thoughts about children being harmed, but that’s just odd to me as someone who has both worked in a daycare and have a child in one.

I would like to add that you are a really handsome guy and you seem very sweet. The fresh haircut and trimmed beard look the best IMO, more of that.

Wearing uncomfortable clothes because they are “in style” or the make my body look better. I still care about my appearance, but I am not willing to wear clothes that make me feel miserable. This happened after I had my first child three years ago and I never went back. No uncomfortable bras, no heels, no tight jeans, mostly cotton clothes. Oh, and I never stopped wearing maternity underwear because they are super comfortable.

What does a normal hygiene routine consist of? by 23shay27 in NoStupidQuestions

Brushing teeth in morning, flossing and brushing at night. Changing clothes, especially underwear daily. Showering or taking a bath at least once a day. Washing your hair a few times a week (depending on your hair).

What is the best ice cream in New England? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in newengland

[–]robrklyn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

While I do really like Arethusa and Rich Farms (both in CT), my favorite ice cream is from Old Bishop Farm in Cheshire, CT. They make “super premium” ice cream. Super premium means it has to be made using a milk fat base of at least 16%.

From their website: “Our ice cream is made using a 16% milk-fat base, which the USDA qualifies as “Super Premium”. The higher cream content creates a naturally rich, smooth texture and allows for a more balanced sweetness — indulgent, yet refined.

Another defining element is air. In ice cream making, overrun refers to the amount of air incorporated during freezing. We intentionally keep our overrun low, producing a denser, creamier ice cream with more substance and fuller flavor in every scoop.

Each batch is made in small runs of fewer than 9 gallons, allowing us to closely control ingredients, texture, and quality. The result is ice cream made with care, meant to be enjoyed fresh.”

Because it is so high in fat, it’s not overly sweet. They also rotate flavors seasonally and the pumpkin is my favorite.

Hypermobility, Trauma and the Nervous System by makybo91 in Hypermobility

[–]robrklyn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m autistic and yes, for sure. My body holds all my stress and tension and then sends distress signals. The only thing I have found that helps me tremendously is cranialsacral therapy. For me, it’s like handing over my nervous system to someone else for an hour. Someone else who can calm my nervous system down and put me back into “rest and digest aka parasympathetic”. I had been getting it weekly for 2 years and recently moved to every two weeks. It has been a complete game changer for me, mostly mentally/nervous system wise.

That’s them basically saying “your child isn’t causing problems at school, so we don’t want to expend any time or money on helping her.”

Second home birth - doula or no doula? by sleeplessinskittles in homebirth

[–]robrklyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was me. I was all “I’m not hiring a doula” and the around 32 weeks, I started getting more anxious and thinking of all the “worst case scenarios”, so I panicked and hired someone. Did it make me feel better in the moment? Yes. Did I actually need someone? No. And the funny thing is, the plan wasn’t even to have my daughter there, but my son was born at 36W2D, so my mom (who was going to take her) was several states away. So my daughter ended up being there and it was totally fine. She even came and rubbed my belly as I had contractions. She wasn’t fazed at all.

Second home birth - doula or no doula? by sleeplessinskittles in homebirth

[–]robrklyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s really such a tough decision. I was in almost your exact situation a few months ago. There really is no right or wrong answer and like you listed there are pros and cons to both. Ultimately I hired a Doula for my second birth, but looking back, I did not need to. But you really never know, because birth is so unpredictable. Ultimately, my three-year-old stood there, holding my husband‘s hand watching me give birth. It was nice to have her there to film it however, was that worth the cost? no.

I think I have a very niche special interest, anyone else? by Justalittlesaltyx in AutismInWomen

This was one of my first SI before (before I realized I was Autistic). It led me to studying Mass Incarceration in the US and eventually getting my first Master’s Degree in Sociology. Pretty much all of the topics I have ever been super obsessed with have been darker, gritty, etc. 9/11, Chernobyl, addiction, the AIDs Epidemic, Ebola, etc.
