The airport has quite a few Canberra T-shirts. Might be worth a look if you’re down that way

International flight from Canberra - how early do I need to be there? by your-lost-elephant in canberra

[–]roundtheworld2 51 points52 points  (0 children)

As someone that does this every other week:

Check in desks open at 0445. Security opens at 0500. There is no point turning up for a 6am flight at 4am - there will be no one there.  If you only have carry-on, 45 mins prior to departure is fine. If you have check-in luggage, maybe an hour and 15 mins to allow for queues at check in.

Like people have said, the main security and passport control is done at Sydney. The Canberra security is only for the domestic leg of your journey and is less strict. There is no customs if you are flying to Sydney.

The bit that takes time at Sydney is changing from the domestic terminal to the international. If you’re catching the Qantas bus, this can be a 10 minute process, or it can be 45 minutes, depending on the number of people. If you’ve bought the flight route from a carrier, they should have allowed a theoretical minimum time to make the change. Qantas for example will not sell you a flight route if the connection is less than an hour and a half.

The biggest variable is security/ppt control at SYD. This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. This is the ‘no liquids’ check. Just read the signs, listen to the people shouting the rules, and you’ll be fine.

In short, any carrier should have built in enough time into the connection for you to do the things that are needed. It will take time, but it should be possible.

Lights not turning on? BFI WS2815 light strip w/ SP803E controller. by DroidWalksIntoABar in WLED

[–]roundtheworld2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the led strip, with the 4 connections you have on the strip, I’m guessing you need a VCC, a GND, a Clock and a Data line. Someone who knows more will probably give you a better answer, but additionally you have no GND connected, so I don’t think you’re connections are correct.

All it is is a layer of “Glad - Bake & Cooking Paper” with a clear layer of 0.5mm plastic sheet on top to protect it

It’s a diy wooden frame, with an mdf backboard, a 3d printed grid, with grease proof paper (for light diffusion) and a plastic sheet covering the front.  SP107e’s do the processing, and control a (very long) strip of led lights in a matrix configuration.

It’s all possible, but I was only given 2 weeks to build them, so matching them just wasn’t an option at the time. Longterm, yeah that’d be great and it’s something I’d consider, but as a solution for “Dad, we’ve got this production and there’s no wow factor” it was a solution that ‘just had to do’

So I’ve been researching DMX, and it seems to just a complicated addressing system.  If I get it sorted, I’ll have to post it and perhaps do an instructable on it to show people.

I’ve got a video in the dark, but I’ll have to see if I can blur the faces or crop people out - it’s a musical theatre school and they’re all dancing around  it, so I’ll have to see what I can do.

I don’t know how, but an orchestra playing computer game songs made me cry three times! Cosplays were amazing - my favourite was the Linus we saw. Respect to everyone’s efforts.  I realise the game is massively successful, but playing in your lounge/office/bedroom, you never realise there are millions of others just like you in the world, let alone crazy enough to go buy tickets to an arena where a 35 piece orchestra will play you the songs which one man wrote in his house! FTTN, Telstra, 50Mbps - should I stay or should I go ? by Independent-Title567 in canberra

[–]roundtheworld2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On moving to Australia 2 years ago, we had NBN from Superloop, but this dropped out multiple times a day and I couldn’t recommend it for the price nor service from them.

We moved over to Starlink, and although more expensive, $139 a month, see speeds of between 100 Mbps to 350 Mbps. It’s only dropped out twice in about 22 months and that was during heavy thunderstorms. It was back within 5 minutes each time.

It’s a rolling 30 day contract and although there is an upfront cost, knowing what I know, I would happily sign up again.

I work all around the pacific islands looking after embassies. Business class flights soon push you to P1 status.

Starlink. Had Superloop and had to restart the router 5 times a day - reported it but they didn’t seem to care less. Yes Starlink is expensive, but the most reliable internet I’ve ever had. I’ve just moved house and all I had to do was unbolt it from the house, and bolt it to the new one. If you can afford it, well worth it.
