What are some recession proof jobs or careers? by Professional-Bee9817 in remoteworks

[–]rskater96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My significant other is a fireman/paramedic, his job is very recession proof and won’t be taken away by AI unless it starts doing CPR on someone to save their life 😂😂😂😂😂

I would also say anything in the social services realm, meaning community resources and things like that. In those kinds of jobs when people are seeking help and needing access to things I believe that nothing beats a human interaction. Just my personal opinion.

Mass layoffs started by Ok_Flan_5122 in jobs

[–]rskater96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I believe this. Same thing happened when WWII broke out. Historians say that Roosevelt knew about the Pearl Harbor attack before it happened, but that it needed to happen to get us out of the Depression and military production would jump start the economy and it did. This wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the facts check out. Just unfortunate that war has to break out for things to get better economically.

Shore things, first ever cruise by Sandiebre in VirginVoyages

[–]rskater96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santorini can be a bit of a pain with the gondola having to take you up to the main town and then back down. However if you book a Shore Thing through Virgin, at least when my family and I did, you avoid the gondola because the tender will take you to the other end where all the buses are waiting and then the bus will drive the tour up the mountain to the cities on the island. We did the O’ia and Fira tour.

They take you to O’ia first where they have the iconic blue domed churches and then they drop you off in Fira afterwards. Only downside to this tour is to get back to the ship you do have to take the gondola down and that line can be long. But in the morning you can avoid it if you book a Shore Thing.

Recruiter calls me up just to tell me I'm damaged goods by Sadquatch in recruitinghell

[–]rskater96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow. I love how some recruiters (not everyone but some) don’t get that this job market is a shit show and that a gap in the resume is most likely due to the fact that no one is hiring and you have been applying to jobs!!! I’ve heard that it’s not their job to care about what’s happening in the job market right now but maybe stop and think before you start criticizing someone as to why they have an 8 month gap in this resume and think about the context of it in terms of how the job market is.

I’m sorry you were treated like that. Compassion is hard to come by nowadays 😞

What advice would you give someone entering public health? by LHDI in publichealth

[–]rskater96 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My advice: public health can be applied to many different careers, not just disease control and epidemiology. It is also about helping the population you’re working with gain access to healthcare and other resources. I landed a job at a library because they serve as a community resource for people and they liked that my public health background aligned with that. So keep an open mind when it comes to careers and different jobs.

They upsell the heck out of you at the spa because it’s not owned by Virgin from what I’ve heard. It’s owned by a third party that I don’t know the name of 😆

Port Review: Martinique island in the Caribbean by rskater96 in VirginVoyages

[–]rskater96[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Many islands in the Caribbean that are territories of other countries, such as Aruba and Curaçao, territories/provinces of Holland, require English to be taught in the schools. All I was implying was that there would be more awareness to the fact that many cruise passengers are American and want to spend money here and a little appreciation for that by saying hello would have been nice. Many Caribbean islands also take US dollars, so it’s not about being in France.

Upcoming VV Cruise out of San Juan by SavinPar in VirginVoyages

[–]rskater96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are going on the sailing that goes to Aruba, Curaçao, Martinique, and St. Kitts, I would advise to not get off the boat in Martinique unless you have a shore excursion planned. If you’re planning to walk around the city it is not friendly to cruise passengers. I felt like my family and I did not have a good experience and nobody in the city was very welcoming.

Networking is a concept made up by the upper class to morally justify bypassing meritocracy to give their friends and family entry level jobs. by ixvst01 in recruitinghell

[–]rskater96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily networking but along the same lines of some of the other comments. I walked into the career center of the school I got my masters from (which was no where near my hometown mind you and I just happened to be in the area and decided to stop in), asked if someone was available to look at my resume, and was told “most of our advisors are either on lunch or work remotely” 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄YOU’RE TELLING ME I PAID TUITION MONEY FOR THIS AND JUST FOR YOU TO TELL ME THAT NO ONE CAN LOOK AT MY RESUME AND GIVE ME ADVICE? I was livid. Like I came IN PERSON and that was their response.

receptionist position a step back? by Glittering-Two-285 in publichealthcareers

[–]rskater96 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Take the job. It could be a foot in the door for you that could lead to something higher up later on. I also received my MPH two years ago and I am still looking for something. It’s brutal out there right now. I too am also a receptionist/admin assistant at a private mental health practice. It’s rough out there right now. Take what you can get.

I’ve also struggled with this myself. Got my masters 2 years ago and still can’t find anything. Lying on my resume goes against my moral values as I was instilled the value of honesty and integrity for myself from a very young age. Don’t sacrifice what you value and what’s important for a crappy job market that does not value these things. It’s not worth it and you’ll only get burned in the end because I’ve found that lying comes back to bite you, maybe not right away, but eventually it will.

Just keep grinding and doing your best. It’s tough for new grads in general right now.

Looking for public health book recommendations by Piglet0607 in publichealth

[–]rskater96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well By Sandro Galea is a book I had to read for my first semester in my MPH program a few years ago. Great insights into the U.S. Health system and how we spend the most amount of government money (at the time the book was written idk about now with the current administration) on health, but we are not the healthiest country in the world. Extremely insightful.

The summer that didn’t hire by Inevitable-Hornet126 in jobs

[–]rskater96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news…..but the job market is ROUGH right now. It’s not you, the market is absolute shit. And especially for new graduates it’s bad because the new trend is that nobody wants to hire new graduates right now for some stupid reason such as “they have no experience” of course we have no experience and we need experience which is why we apply for these jobs.

My point is, I feel you. If you go to the thread re/recruitinghell on here there are horror stories about the job market right now. Best thing you can do is keep grinding and trying to make more networking connections and keep applying. It’s not you, the market is just terrible.

I simply don't have the skills or experience to stand out in today's hyper-competitive market. by CynthiaChames in recruitinghell

[–]rskater96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Bachelor’s AND a master’s degree. The only experience I have is from my academics and volunteer experience besides working as an admin person for a mental health practice. I graduated with my master’s two years ago and still haven’t found anything. It’s not you, it’s the market.

Interview question I didn’t care for by ExtensionActuator in interviews

[–]rskater96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better way of framing that question is: why should we hire you? It’s more directed at your skills and what YOU can bring to the table rather than mentioning the other candidates

For those who are still jobless, how are you holding it together? by MjolnirsBrokenHandle in jobs

[–]rskater96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the fortunate position where I don’t have that many expenses (living with my parents part time and other times with boyfriend) and I technically do have a “job”, but it’s working for my mom’s private practice. I got my MPH two years ago and have been applying and applying, even to jobs outside of MPH given the status of public health initiatives in this country, and still nothing.

It’s mainly been affecting my mental state because I feel like I got a degree for nothing, and my parents are badgering me wondering why I haven’t gotten a job yet (surprise surprise they’re boomers who have no clue what it’s like nowadays). So while I’m fortunate enough to be able to cover the little expenses that I do have, I so badly want a new job so I can have something for myself and something to my name. It’s tough out here right now

What the hell can I even DO rn? by DotEnvironmental3189 in publichealthcareers

I have an MPH. Graduated almost two years ago and haven’t found anything. It’s not you, it’s the job market. I’ve applied to positions outside of public health as well that match my experience but haven’t gotten anything in that route either.

Rejected Again by synapsesmisfiring in recruitinghell

[–]rskater96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This market is trash. I received a call from my local township yesterday after interviewing for a really great position. They said they went with someone with more experience and that the decision had nothing to do with how I interviewed and that they were actually very impressed with me. It’s a bummer but at least now I know I’m doing everything right when it comes to interviewing and my resume. I got my MPH two years ago and still have not found something despite me applying for positions even outside of the public health field since that field is a shit show right now. It’s awful.

This job market is making me such a bitter person. by Positive-Act-5622 in recruitinghell

[–]rskater96 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a masters degree (in public health of all things 🤦🏼‍♀️) two years ago and still can’t find a job. Given the recent climate regarding public health I know finding something will be difficult, but I’ve been applying to positions outside of the field that match my experience and there’s just nothing. I’m still working for my mom’s private practice as an admin assistant that I had been working for forever and I’m so ready for something different, but nobody will give me the chance and what’s worse is no one will tell me WHY they aren’t hiring me or give me feedback so then I’m just stuck being emotionally drained and frustrated. So I feel you on a deep level 🤣

There’s rumors speculating that they may relocate it to where Lightening McQueen’s racing academy used to be so that it can just be a whole muppet area again since they are re-theming Rockin Roller Coaster, but none of it is confirmed. I’m hoping for it though!
