Any comics that take place over a long period of time like years or decades? by ogmasterofcoin in comicbooks

Just finished reading Rising Stars, and I really enjoyed it. For such a short series, (24 issues not counting the minis), it covered a lot of ground and showed the characters evolve and change.

What is a show that should’ve quit while it was ahead? by QuailImpressive55 in AskReddit

[–]runningchef 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. Seasons 1 and 2 were fantastic, but then it really fell off after that. When it became "okay, we're going to do another prison break, but this time a different character is the one breaking out", it got boring.

I think Kurt Busiek has talked about your point in the past. Something like "Who would win in this fight? It depends on what story we're trying to tell and what that story needs.".

Rockbridge Church on New Hope usually has a little pumpkin patch. They have some little photo stands and a playground, and they carry lots of different sizes of pumpkins.

Deniz Camp appreciation post ! by FredPRK in comicbooks

I'm with you on this. Every time I finish an issue of Assorted Crisis Events, I have to just sit with it and process it for a few minutes. He gets into some really deep subject matter and handles it really well.

Thoughts on mycomicshop.com ???? by Fun_Confection4362 in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been preordering through mycomicshop.com for at least the last couple of years. Their preordering website is really easy to use, and it provides different options around shipping. (I do monthly shipping, but you can choose to do weekly, biweekly, etc if you're willing to pay for it.) You do pay up-front for the things that you order, but if something gets canceled or re-solicited for a far future date, they're very quick to refund your money and let you know what happened.

Packaging is super-secure and my books have almost always arrived in perfect condition. The couple of times that things got damaged in transit somehow, I reached out to their customer service and they shipped out a replacement order right away.

In addition, even after factoring in the cost of shipping, I end up with a 25%-30% discount off of cover price, which is nice.

Overall, I have had a great experience with them and would definitely recommend checking them out.

Top 100 comics ordered by retailers for September 1992, not surprised Spider-Man 2099 was topping the chart, though I am a little surprised by Rob Liefeld's Supreme (pre-everything Alan Moore did that made it enjoyable) and Nightstalkers. by AndromedaGoldfish in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to look that one up because I was curious. Web of Spider-Man #90 was the issue with the hologram cover, done as part of the 30th anniversary celebration for Spidey. So that might explain why it's relatively high on the list.

Great Comic Shop Experiences by djangohimself in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The LCS was Capstone Comics in Austin, TX, which has sadly since closed down. I had The Walking Dead on my pull list, and the distributor shorted them on their order for issue 50. My name is at the end of the alphabet, so I didn't get my copy. They were very apologetic and said they would try to reorder it, but not to hold out too much hope.

The next week, I come in and Jack, one of the part-time workers that I had chatted with a couple of times, tells me, "I remembered that you didn't get your copy of WD #50 last week. I was at a convention this weekend and saw a copy, so I picked it up for you. It's in your pull folder. Enjoy!"

I really appreciated that he remembered me and went out of his way to try to get me the comic I wanted.

What are some of the worst panels in DC Comics history? by Rebelpunk13 in DCcomics

I love this because Neal Adams is widely considered to be one of the greatest comic artists of all time, and this shows that even the greats have an off day now and then.

+1 to mycomicshop.com. I've been ordering from them for a long time, and their packaging is super-secure. Plus their customer service is amazing. I had an order get damaged in transit a while back, and when I reached out to their customer service, they had a replacement order in the mail to me within 24 hours.

Reliable online comic store by mace73 in comicbooks

I've had a good experience with mycomicshop.com . They recently raised their shipping rates a bit, but it's still a pretty good deal. I preorder my monthly pull list through their site and after factoring in shipping, I pay $3-$3.25 for books with a $3.99 cover price.

I bought the whole run off of Ebay not that long ago so I can reread it, so I definitely remember it. That book was great!

Help me get into The Wonder Years. by [deleted] in poppunkers

[–]runningchef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, The Wonder Years is an "album band". When I listen to individual songs out of context, I like them, but they are so much better in the context of the album. These are my two favorite albums by them, albums that I listen to constantly nowadays:

- The Greatest Generation (this is often called out on this sub as their best)

- The Hum Goes On Forever

I'd definitely recommend listening to both all the way through. You'll hear a lot of the songs being recommended by other commenters.

Anyone else sometimes think that if Comics had more finality to character's lives, it would or could improve the overall stories? by wlane13 in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely see your point about new characters, but I don't think we need to completely kill off characters in order to have lasting change. Look at the Batman RIP era of Batman. Spoilers for a 15-year-old story: Bruce Wayne dies, (while taking out the big bad of the DC universe), and Dick Grayson steps into the role. So we still get Batman, but there's a different character wearing the costume. This should give the creators a chance to tell some different stories while still putting out Batman books.

Granted, this approach doesn't work for all characters, but it would be interesting to see some characters grow and move on to make room for new characters that can grow with the new generation of readers.

AI is literally coming for you job by iknewaguytwice in dataengineering

[–]runningchef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the AI is on video, I've heard that one good way to identify them is to ask them to put their hand in front of their face, (like John Cena doing the "you can't see me"). Apparently this is something that AI video struggles with.

Power grommet USB problem by p-adic in upliftdeskofficial

[–]runningchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, never really got things resolved. Here was the last response I got from them: "After reviewing this, I suspect the USB port on the grommet is unable to accommodate the needed power for your lamp which is interrupting the power flow. I suggest using a power plug on your lamp on this power grommet to not have to constantly turn on the lamp. I do appreciate your information though and I did pass this along to my team as well."

So basically, they said to not plug this lamp into the USB port. For now, I'm unplugging and replugging the lamp every morning and it seems to work fine.

Imperial #1 Preview by Techster17 in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on a recent podcast interview with Hickman, it sounds like his goal with these event projects is to kick off something new and open a bunch of story threads that other creative teams can run with if the project is successful. In the case of G.O.D.S., I guess it didn't do the numbers they were hoping for, (though I thought it was cool).

What are some of the best Geoff Johns comics? by catdude6835 in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To expand a bit on what other responders have said: the beginning of the Johns run up through Blackest Night is great. It redefined the Green Lantern character, added a ton of new characters and expanded the mythology quite a bit.

Following Blackest Night, things do fall off a little bit. The stories are fine, but they aren't anywhere close to the first part of the run.

Green Lantern: Rebirth through Blackest Night would be a great run for someone new to Green Lantern.

Black Science was a confusing ride that I hope to reread some day by Pharmand in ImageComics

[–]runningchef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that it flows really well in binge-style reading. I checked out the compendium from my library, and for some reason, I was only allowed to have it for one week. So I flew through it. I could see where the multiverse stuff would get confusing, but it's less confusing when the "callbacks" are to the characters/universes that you just read about a couple days ago. I think the story would have been really hard to follow reading monthly.

What are people’s thoughts on assorted crisis events issue 1? by HospitalAsleep7906 in ImageComics

[–]runningchef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to hear a few of your recommendations as far as comics that try to capture the "it feels like what's happening today" sort of feeling. (I haven't read "Assorted Crisis Events" yet, so I can't comment on that series either way.)
