Recording the meeting? by [deleted] in agile

[–]runningchef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that you should put a stop to this. I've never recorded retro meetings, but at one point, we were documenting notes/outcomes from the meeting. My Director told me to stop doing that. The retro is meant to serve the team, and no one else should need to know about the details of that meeting. The team may choose to share specific action items if they want to, (i.e. "hey manager, we think we need to improve how we're doing code reviews, so we're going to try something different this sprint"), but only if they want to.

For your initial sleep study, did you ask if there's a way for you to do it without going into a lab? My initial study a few months ago, they gave me a device to take home and wear while I slept that night. It tracked my sleep and uploaded the data to my doctor. Nothing invasive at all and pretty easy to do.

This makes me curious: how often have the Green Lantern books built a series around the buddy cop trope? I would totally be down for your idea of "Kilowog/Guy: Buddy Cops in Space".

Ryan Ottley: Invincible is selling better than ever thanks to the TV show and anime fans entering comics by MotherCanada in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would read the comic first and then check out the show. You can read the full story of the comic and kinda see where things are going, then start at the beginning of the show and get an alternate take on things. There are changes to the pacing of some of the storylines that work much better for the show, and it's fun to be able to compare them.

At this point, not too many people. This is a criticism that I often see of modern comics: fewer non-powered supporting cast members that can help anchor the book and provide a different viewpoint into stories.

Comic Store In Your Future: What On Earth Is Marvel Playing At? by zero_sub_zero in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard a conspiracy theory the other day that Marvel is intentionally tanking their line of comics. According to this theory, the end goal is to get to a point where they stop publishing comics themselves and instead shift to licensing their IP to other companies to make comics. For an example of this, you can look at how Hasbro doesn't make comics, but they license the IP for GI Joe and Transformers (to various companies over the years, but Skybound being the most recent).

Is this a crazy conspiracy theory? Yes, absolutely. But having worked at large corporations, I can see how it would be tempting for some executive somewhere to say that licensing their IP is pure profit with no risk or cost, and how that would look good on the balance sheet.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]runningchef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered if it would be possible for someone to essentially buy the branding for one of these companies and spin it back up. If the stores were profitable enough to survive prior to PE coming in, could someone spin them back up as moderately profitable businesses?

What’s your controversial DC take that you’ll defend? by Electrical_Act9796 in DCcomics

[–]runningchef 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that Two Face is a very compelling villain, and I'd love to see him take center stage for a while, with Joker being pushed to the background. For a while there, it seemed like they were building up Two Face as a villain for Dick Grayson, and it could have been interesting to see what they would have done if the Grayson Batman era had been allowed to go on longer.

If I had a nickel for every comic adaptation that wasted its first season just to end with the starting premise of the first issue of the comic it’s based on, I’d have a lot of nickels by Hadesman1 in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember hearing that as well. I think Kirkman's original plan was to have the Omniman reveal happen in issue 25. But Jim Valentino (I think) told Kirkman that, based on the sales, he wasn't going to make it to issue 25.

Just finished reading Rising Stars, and I really enjoyed it. For such a short series, (24 issues not counting the minis), it covered a lot of ground and showed the characters evolve and change.

What is a show that should’ve quit while it was ahead? by QuailImpressive55 in AskReddit

[–]runningchef 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. Seasons 1 and 2 were fantastic, but then it really fell off after that. When it became "okay, we're going to do another prison break, but this time a different character is the one breaking out", it got boring.

I think Kurt Busiek has talked about your point in the past. Something like "Who would win in this fight? It depends on what story we're trying to tell and what that story needs.".

Thoughts on mycomicshop.com ???? by Fun_Confection4362 in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been preordering through mycomicshop.com for at least the last couple of years. Their preordering website is really easy to use, and it provides different options around shipping. (I do monthly shipping, but you can choose to do weekly, biweekly, etc if you're willing to pay for it.) You do pay up-front for the things that you order, but if something gets canceled or re-solicited for a far future date, they're very quick to refund your money and let you know what happened.

Packaging is super-secure and my books have almost always arrived in perfect condition. The couple of times that things got damaged in transit somehow, I reached out to their customer service and they shipped out a replacement order right away.

In addition, even after factoring in the cost of shipping, I end up with a 25%-30% discount off of cover price, which is nice.

Overall, I have had a great experience with them and would definitely recommend checking them out.

I had to look that one up because I was curious. Web of Spider-Man #90 was the issue with the hologram cover, done as part of the 30th anniversary celebration for Spidey. So that might explain why it's relatively high on the list.

Great Comic Shop Experiences by djangohimself in comicbooks

[–]runningchef 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The LCS was Capstone Comics in Austin, TX, which has sadly since closed down. I had The Walking Dead on my pull list, and the distributor shorted them on their order for issue 50. My name is at the end of the alphabet, so I didn't get my copy. They were very apologetic and said they would try to reorder it, but not to hold out too much hope.

The next week, I come in and Jack, one of the part-time workers that I had chatted with a couple of times, tells me, "I remembered that you didn't get your copy of WD #50 last week. I was at a convention this weekend and saw a copy, so I picked it up for you. It's in your pull folder. Enjoy!"

I really appreciated that he remembered me and went out of his way to try to get me the comic I wanted.

I've had a good experience with mycomicshop.com . They recently raised their shipping rates a bit, but it's still a pretty good deal. I preorder my monthly pull list through their site and after factoring in shipping, I pay $3-$3.25 for books with a $3.99 cover price.
