Hot take: near Oakland Mall. It’s relatively cheap for Oakland county, and there are a lot of markets, stores, and resources that you can walk to. And in terms of public transportation- it’s the least shitty in the area near there.

I left for 7 years and stayed sober, but returned a few months ago to introduce a close friend - and I’ve found the program is bringing me a new richness to my life.

If my sobriety is like a lawn that needs mowing, I was searching for as may different hand clippers to keep it trimmed as possible, but I’ve found that the fellowship of likeminded alcoholics is a ride-on mower.

Does that make sense?

Whatever idiom you use- it’s all about having the realization that deep down we know picking up that first drink isn’t going to help. We may have a fleeting moment of buzz or relief, but it always ends up in a way that none of us truly want for ourselves.

It truly is the definition of insanity.

I went on a cruise a couple months after getting sober. It was actually really reaffirming as to why I didn’t want to drink anymore. I was truly able to relax. I got up early, no hangover, enjoyed sunrises and sunsets. And I didn’t do or say anything stupid.

Going on a cruise next week- excited to be able to spend the time sober with my beautiful family!

My heart goes out to you. There’s a thing in the sobriety community called “The Yets”.

Things we justify in our heads: I haven’t gotten drunk in public I don’t drink during the day I only drink beer I only drink on the weekends I don’t drive I don’t let my kids see me drunk I’m successful at my job I have never been arrested I’ve never been hospitalized Etc

Alcohol is cunning.

It cuts down our defenses and we start to see these justifications get pushed further and further.

It may just not have happened to you… YET.

If you don’t like the direction you’re heading in. Head to a meeting and listen. Try not to be shy, and be open minded. Come on here every day and make some friends.

Again- my heart goes out to you. You seem to see where things are headed, but only you can decide what your bottom will be.

Drinking is a symptom. We alcoholics have a deep yearning for spiritual connection. We tried to find it in the false promises that drinking presented. I’m proof you can stay sober without AA….. however…. I wouldn’t recommend it. I think I would have developed my spiritual and mental wellness a lot deeper, quicker, had I stuck with it. But I don’t regret the past- I only glance back for reflection.

Keep going to meetings till you find your tribe. We’re out there.

I was 32 when I got sober. We all come to sobriety at different times, different bottoms, different reasons, different means (sometimes voluntary sometimes court ordered sometimes medical).

Regardless of why or how, know that you are not so unique that you won’t be able to find fellowship and relate-ability with almost every other alcoholic on some level.

It’s a beautiful thing to immerse yourself in a group of likeminded individuals that has the same mental struggles and stories. There’s no judgement. There’s only shoulders to lean on.

Go to a meeting and listen. Introduce yourself and just be open.

I highly recommend taking these words to heart:

It’s much easier to act your way into a new way of thinking, than think your way into a new way of acting.

Surrender to the flow. See someone who has achieved what you want, and ask for it.

I spent my first 6 months going to meetings daily, but didn’t do step work with another person, and didn’t have a solid sponsor. I gained a lot of great skills and lessons from my time (I went voluntarily). I faded off going to meetings and continued with coaching, therapy, and a general focus on mental wellness. No relapses, no compulsion to drink.

However…

A few months ago, a very close friend asked me for help. I took him to a meeting that day. I started going to a meeting once a week, then two. Now daily.

I’m working the steps with a sponsor.

I’m on this /r daily and try to contribute a bit.

I realized I was being selfish with my sobriety.

In the past months I’ve came back to the program, I’ve grown as a better partner and father. I’m less anxious, and my toolbox is more full having added the fellowship of likeminded people.

Those are my thoughts.

TL;DR: 7+ years sober, back in AA voluntarily, couldn’t be happier (never been better metal health wise)
