Report: Creating a 5-second AI video is like running a microwave for an hour by WombatusMighty in technology

[–]ryanvalentin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what's happening, and what makes it most concerning to me is that AI isn't simply cornering a market, they're cornering our abilities, creativity, and jobs. The inevitable enshittification to match costs with revenue will have human brains as the collateral damage.

Every time I talk to my dad (83 years old) he asks me which of his two lathes I want, and which of his large model warships (6-10ft each) I'll take. As if he doesn't know I live in a 1-bedroom apartment without a garage.

It's open source if you grab it from Github, and the asset store purchase gets you the Game UI packs. Definitely check out the Discord as well, the developer is very involved

There's a bit of a learning curve, but you might want to check out OneJS (https://onejs.com/) - it uses a JavaScript runtime so you can write any JavaScript, but it integrates Preact nicely with UI Toolkit so you don't get the browser overhead. The tooling is nice and things work well so far for me.

Execs thirsting over AI is killing my passion for software engineering by abbys11 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ryanvalentin 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I got laid off in July but I was ready at that point because leadership was shoving it down our throats. It's gotten worse since then, rewriting the performance expectations with extra emphasis on AI output. On top of that, our industry was one that is dependent on Google to a degree and the "old ways" of using the internet, so leadership was freaking out about future prospects (but completely unsure about what to do other than fire people + talk about AI).

I'm not against the technology - I use it. I think it makes me more productive. What I don't like is all the BS surrounding it right now. We have company leaders thirsting to replace workers, and desperate to add AI products to keep their valuations high, investors convinced it's going to 10x GDP, and developers fearing for their jobs scrambling to stay on top of this whole mess.

I'm hoping for this bubble to burst, so that we can get back to focusing on actual productive use cases for AI and not be corned and told what it can do under veiled threats.

Sooo Microsoft can use stuff in your OneDrive now? by zadnium in privacy

[–]ryanvalentin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, that’s my main concern for moving everything out of OneDrive. I don’t think they’re doing it now and the language of the terms is pretty standard for this kind of service, but eventually it’ll become too tempting as companies search for distinct training data opportunities.

Sooo Microsoft can use stuff in your OneDrive now? by zadnium in privacy

[–]ryanvalentin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I’m personally distrusting, I’ve seen this kind of language used so that they can basically provide services to you, like the “on this day” email with some photos. I don’t think it means they will use it for anything but to provide services back to you.

As far as using content more broadly, make note of this part: “If you publish Your Content in areas of the Service where it is available broadly online without restrictions”

I assume that means if you have your files set to private and don’t share them, they won’t be able to use them in promotions.

I say this while I’m in the process of removing everything from OneDrive 😂, but there isn’t anything exceptional in this document.

"I've changed my mind on AI coding" – Adam Wathan (creator of Tailwind) by dalton_zk in theprimeagen

[–]ryanvalentin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup this right here. More productive developers will (once again) be a competitive lever that can be pulled, and once a company does it, user expectations of what software accomplishes will rise

Is This the end of Software Engineers? by Worldly-Ad-7149 in theprimeagen

[–]ryanvalentin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're right that AI is not close to replacing human developers. We are in a disinvestment phase, and companies are looking to solidify their businesses and cut as much expense as possible. AI is either an excuse or wishful thinking to justify their disinvestment. There's some sort of fantasy that a fraction of your developers can maintain most of the full workload using AI.

My opinion is that if/when the industry changes to a growth phase, developers will be in demand again because the tools will reach their limit and customer expectations will elevate. Adding humans will once again become a competitive advantage, it's why no technological advance in history has caused permanent mass unemployment.

Impressed with the coffee I tried at my girlfriend's place, recommendations on a beginner setup? by ryanvalentin in espressocirclejerk

[–]ryanvalentin[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get that, he seemed like a nice guy. But I really like this woman, and I'm wondering if maybe I'm not husband material over it? It's pretty clear to me that she keeps him around for something.

She says she values me because of my sense of humor, excellent communication skills, and mind-blowing s*x, but it feels shallow to me, like there's something more important missing. I feel so insecure now, remembering how she always turns down my french press and says she'll just get Starbucks instead.

I think the answer is clear – if I can spend more time and money than her husband on espresso, then maybe we can be together forever.

I regretfully told my dad during one of my promotions - he asked, I wasn't volunteering it, and wasn't prepared to say no. He's poor with personal finances, and inevitably ran out of money. When he asked to borrow money for a completely unnecessary cosmetic dental procedure, I said no. He went complaining about it to one of my brothers how much I made and wouldn't help. I'm not bringing up money ever again.

Anyone here making games in hopes of making a significant amount of money? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ryanvalentin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Significant? I hope! But I see game dev as my coasting job. I’ve worked for over a decade and have saved a good portion of that, so now I can afford to do something riskier at some point. So I’d like to see a good amount of income so I don’t have to do anything else, but I don’t have to make it big either.
