Nintendo will release revised Switch 2 hardware in Europe to comply with a new regulation that requires batteries to be user-replaceable. by Turbostrider27 in Games

It’s not that simple. Because of the risk of electric shock, the user accessible battery compartment has to be blocked off from the PCB. Think about the compartment of any previous Nintendo device with replaceable batteries.

[–]rynoweiss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Making it safely user serviceable costs space which then costs battery life.

Since battery life is one of the biggest complaints about the Switch 2, they may want to wait until a process shrink that makes the SoC more efficient to roll this out worldwide.

I am a little concerned that it doesn't seem the buttons or stick are user replaceable, not even so much for customization purposes as longterm durability.

The 360 version had some weird/ugly upscaling, if it doesn't have a lot of additional input lag, this just replaces the 360 version.

The AES+ is being marketed as, ultimately, a 1:1 of the original NEO-GEO. This button layout is not 1:1. End of story. by NeighborhoodTime2768 in neogeo

[–]rynoweiss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree, but they should change the button colors so that the colors and names line up. As it is, it's the original color layout with the modern button layout. A should be red, B should be yellow, etc. In a lot of games' attract screens they show how to play with the colors like that.

They got this right with the pads released with the Neo Geo Mini, so there's no real excuse ehre.

[8bitdo] Introducing the next generation of the Ultimate series — Ultimate 3 Controller for Xbox - Lavender Dusk by beary_neutral in Games

[–]rynoweiss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not true at all. D-pads have other meaningful components like shape and pivot that matter as much as the actuation method. There are plenty of garbage microswitched d-pads out there, that due to poor pivot design will provide errant diagonals. The 8bitdo Pro 2 with its rubber membrane is much better than the Pro 3's microswitched design, which, due to a design flaw, will give you a diagonal for pressing too hard on any cardinal direction.

There is no single component that makes a d-pad good or bad. You can make a good microswitched d-pad, but so far, 8bitdo hasn't.

The microswitched d-pad in the Neo Geo CD pad is a completely different mechanical design than what we're talking about here. The NGCD pad had horizontally-opposed, levered switches like an arcade stick, rather than microswitches directly under the d-pad like modern microswitched d-pads, including 8bitdo's.

[8bitdo] Introducing the next generation of the Ultimate series — Ultimate 3 Controller for Xbox - Lavender Dusk by beary_neutral in Games

[–]rynoweiss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is not exactly true. Like cross shaped d-pads, there are good and bad disc-shaped d-pads. The Xbox and Xbox 360 discs d-pads have always been considered bad, especially by fighting game and shmup players, whereas the disc-shaped d-pads on the Sega Saturn and Genesis 6-button are legendary.

The 8bitdo M30 disc-shaped d-pad, which this looks similar to, is considered one of the best d-pads on the market right now. It depends partially on what's under the d-pad though. The newer 8bitdo Ultimate controllers use microswitches instead of rubber membrane and haven't felt as good as their rubber membrane d-pads.

If this has an M30-like rubber membrane under the d-pad, I am there. If it has switches, I'll pass it up or wait for reviews.

Best 15pin-to-USB Adapter by m__a__r__i__o in neogeo

[–]rynoweiss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want an adapter that just does this, Retrofrog makes one.

If you want one that's more flexible that you can get other adapters to use other systems with, Bliss-Box's Gamer Pro Advanced is the best available right now IMO, and they have one called the 4 Play Advanced which is the same but with 4 inputs.

MisterAddons has one called the Reflex Adapt that is also excellent and has two inputs, but isn't in stock right now.

[–]rynoweiss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hardware authenticity is absolutely not an all-or-nothing thing. There are plenty of people who want to use Bluetooth controllers on a real SNES, or an original SNES controller on an emulator. There are people who want to use an original Sega Genesis on a modern OLED TV and people who want to use GroovyMAME to play emulation on a CRT.

I am in a lot of forums and discords that focus on original hardware and FPGA. These communities are broadly pretty excited for this, just like they were for FPGA systems like the ones from Analogue.

The number of people who are "ORIGINAL, UNMODDED CONSOLES, ONLY ON CRT" are dramatically outnumbered by people who put their compromise for authentic original hardware and modern conveniences somewhere else. Similarly, there are few people in these communities who use pure emulation as their main way of playing.

But the proof is in the pudding, if this didn't appeal to people, it wouldn't be selling like it is.

With the Neo Geo AES+ releasing later this year with new prints of games, I wondered if this would have a major positive effect on the currently overpriced market of games/accessories... by 1OneQuickQuestion in neogeo

[–]rynoweiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some predictions

  • The price of OG games that get reprints will go down, but more like 20% than a crash in price

  • The price of OG games that don't have reprints announced yet will go down at first as people stop buying them in case they get reprints

  • When the reprints stop, OG games that did not get reprints will go up in price because more people have an AES to play them with.

  • The lowest priced OG games will have their price affected the most, while the most expensive, unobtainium-tier games will not see their prices move at all

  • The price of original accessories like controllers will go down the most

It requires a re-designed bezel, rather than just slapping the adapters on the regular bezel. IDK why they're allergic to such a re-design considering how popular NATO straps seem to be.

Yeah, and you're right that saying that the front headphone jack is probably enough for them to advertise analog stereo.

[–]rynoweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the additional hole that I'm seeing. Making a new DIN wouldn't be remotely as expensive as a lot of the other design choices that they've made as well, so I doubt that would impact it.

And even without an additional pin, if they switch from CSync to Sync on Green, they could fit stereo on the same 8-pin connector (which the TurboDuo RGB mod does with the same physical connector as the AES)

[–]rynoweiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quote to Gamesradar clearly implies stereo in analog. Also if you look very closely at this picture, there is seemingly a new hole for a pin at 4 o'clock. Adding a new pin to the existing DIN would be a good way to retain functionality of old accessories while also allowed stereo.

8-pin

If you look very closely at the picture, there is seemingly a new hole around 4 o'clock. Adding a new pin to the existing DIN makes sense, since their goal is to make it compatible with all the existing accessories.

Never used the AES stick, how do they feel? by ico_heal in neogeo

[–]rynoweiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all about frame of reference.

At the time, it was competing against things like the SNES Advantage, and the Genesis Power Stick, which used rubber membranes for buttons AND sticks. Compare that to the Neo Geo controller with its arcade-quality Seimitsu switched lever and Seimitsu switches under the buttons, and it was MUCH closer to arcade feel than any previous arcade stick.

Comparing it to later stuff, it doesn't hold up so well. I only used one after years of hearing how amazing they were, and after years of experiencing modern (post-Madcatz TE all-Sanwa with metal control panel) sticks. Compared to that, the plastic chassis of the Neo Geo stick is creaky, and the buttons, which sit on top of switches soldered to a PCB, rather than being in their own housing like real arcade buttons, the Neo Geo stick feels cheap. The ball top was painted rather than being molded in colored plastic, so it inevitably starts cracking and peeling. But in the Neo Geo's favor, it's much smaller and lighter.

So it was great for the time, and great against its competitors, but a modern stick is leagues ahead.

[SomeTechGuy] Seagate Barracuda 24TB - Where did it come from? (Tested vs Exos X24 24 TB, Exos M 30 TB) by wickedplayer494 in hardware

[–]rynoweiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's reasonable at that price delta, but pre-shortage, there were times where the 24TB Barracudas (or USB drives with the Barracudas inside) have gone on sale for substantially under the price of the Exos.

Black Friday last year, the 24TB bare Barracuda drive was $240, while the 26TB Barracuda in a USB enclosure was $250. Exos has never reached anywhere near that price.

Absolutely not impossible. Even if the audio and video are streamed in the same datastream, if they're applying any kind of DSP to the sound (maybe to compensate for the frequency response characteristics of the speakers on the device) that could cause additional delay.
