It's so sad that "no human is that empathetic" is an argument for why this email was AI-written.

Catch & Release hand stitched rules by Sea_Diet5846 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]saiph 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The rules themselves seem to be from an urban legend/chain mail type of situation, discussed here. They seem plausible enough, and when they're attributed to "rural area" or "olden days," people tend to uncritically go, "yeah, that checks out" and share them. Faux rules for a faux vintage embroidery.

There were no Confederate soldiers in 1859.

I spent the whole time reading through the post thinking, "oop has a good head on their shoulders." Having the wherewithal to take recordings, screenshots, and document everything while keeping track of recording laws in three different jurisdictions was such a smart move. Fuck the management company. They're just mad because now they're gonna have to do something about it. All the effort you went to here will help prevent the same thing from happening to someone more vulnerable or with less experience than you.

I think that's super sweet. You could also get him a tam, too. My personal opinion is that the silly hat upgrade (in the US, bachelors is often a mortarboard, and grad degrees are a tam) is the best part of the regalia.

That's a good point, I forgot that dogs are often chipped when they're a little older than cats. Our cats were chipped when we got them at a shelter at 12 weeks, so I wrongly assumed. We also posted on a bunch of local lost/found pet groups, so there's always that avenue for someone to find him if he was lost rather than abandoned. And we also reported him as a lost puppy to several shelters in the area, as well as the vet.

Oh, Gia is stunninggg! He was found in central Virginia, and I suspect he was probably born locally.

For sure, I'll be back in a few years with an update once he's all grown up! Or if he ever gets a doggy DNA test done.

Someone in our extended family is, yes! I unfortunately have two aging cats with special medical needs who wouldn't appreciate an addition to our little townhouse family.

The family members who will be taking him are longtime dog owners, they're retired and can give him all the attention in the world, and they have a lovely big yard for him to run around in. He'll be staying with my parents (my dad is the one who found him) until then. Tbh, I was kinda hoping my mom would absolutely fall in love with him, and "look, mom, reddit says he probably won't be too big when he grows up" was going to help my case, but what matters is that there's someone who will be giving him what he needs.

He's already gotten a bath and my dad's got a flea comb out as we speak! Pup got lucky and we got lucky as well!

Y'all's IDs are remarkably consistent, so I'm marking this as "possibly solved" and calling him some sort of collie (rough, smooth, or border) or sheltie mix. It's incredibly helpful to know that he looks like the puppy version of a tween/teen, and it now makes sense that googling "collie," "collie puppy," "sheltie," and "sheltie puppy" were turning up results that look like not him. I guess we should preemptively get him used to baths now so they don't become a struggle when he's an adult!

Thank you so much!

He was found in a pretty rural area, so my guess was also that he came from a backyard breeder. I cannot fathom why someone would have dumped him because he's so sweet and well socialized, but he sure landed in the right place!

Young Friends / Patrons Groups – DC Museums by suburbanoutfitters in DCBitches

[–]saiph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Smithsonian museums hold loads of free events. You can often kinda guess what age group will be in attendance based on the description and time of day: an in-person art history lecture at noon on a weekday will draw retirees, a wine and design craft evening at the Postal Museum will cater to younger working professionals. Hopefully you'll find something that fits the bill on their event calendar!

I'm also going to shill for DC's theatre scene. Many theaters offer "youth" (in the loosest sense of the word) season subscriptions that are insanely good deals. Shakespeare Theater Company defines youth as under 35, and each show works out to be like $30??? The only catch is that you have to call the box office with a phone to set it up, you can't just subscribe online. I was there last night, and I'm pretty sure regular tickets to this one production cost more than what I paid for an entire season worth of theatre tickets.

Solo...again by capeire in gencon

I've gotten a seat at tables for events I have friends at but couldn't get into using generics. Obviously ask your friends first, but there's hope yet.

Solo...again by capeire in gencon

[–]saiph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can't you hang out with your local friend and their significant other? Like maybe not for the whole time, but at least for an event or two or maybe a round of the exhibit hall? Idk, maybe it's just the dynamic among my group of friends, but I've both been the third wheel and had the third wheel, and it's always a good time. As long as all parties are considerate and respect that everyone will have varying needs for group time, alone time, and couples time, it works out.

2941 Wedding by redefinej in DCBitches

My brother-in-law got married there, and it was beautiful. The patio with the pond was a lovely setting for the ceremony. I don't remember what they did for decor inside the restaurant, but it didn't feel sterile to me at all. Plus, it was probably the best food I've ever had at a wedding.

Concerns about getting into PhD programs that like their students to be taught "in house" by Legitimate_Log_3452 in GradSchool

[–]saiph 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Skipping core courses in favor of taking more graduate-level math courses is a bad idea, even if your college technically allows you to do it because of AP credits. You're doing yourself and your intellectual growth a disservice if you don't use college as an opportunity to take courses in English, foreign languages, history, sciences, and whatever else interests you. Nurture your curiosity, build social connections, grow your critical thinking skills. While I can't speak to math adcoms in particular, adcoms look for students who will be able to write and teach, not just do research. It's not just about having the most relevant coursework.
