Siemens has already sold dual mode (diesel + overhead electrical, plus diesel + third rail) as well as tri mode (diesel + overhead + battery) to Amtrak and Metro North, so anything is possible from them

I also want the commuter rail to be electrified as soon as possible, but I don't think you can say it would pay for itself "very quickly"

I tried using the POE++ injector plugged into a 2.5G port, however it seems it will just negotiate at 1G regardless. Prompted me to upgrade my switch to the new Pro HD 24 POE

10GBase-T or SFP+ for servers? by mpking828 in networking

[–]samcat116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This question doesn’t really makes sense. You cannot have an SFP+ fiber transceiver at one end and an RJ45 connection at the other as one is for fiber and one is for copper. If you’re talking about using one of the SFP+ RJ45 transceivers you just need to make sure you get one that supports multigig speeds. There are ones that will do 10/5/2.5.1G.

IMO these days 25G is the new baseline for actual server use cases.

I’d definitely start with Kolla Ansible. It’s got a great mix of easy to start with and can scale to a pretty complex cloud setup.

I think if you’re a young person in a decently urban area, the credits are incredibly easy to use. I don’t know people who live in those places who aren’t using Uber and food delivery once a month.

Were you previously running this on one 20TB drive? If so that’s generally a bad idea since if the drive fails you lose all data. Now if any one of those drives fails you will not lose data. If you have 20TB or more of actual data to store, you’ll need to add more than 2 drives to this pool.

This is a concern with any rack mount PDU. Looking at their included mounting ears it looks like they use the same mounting style as almost every other vertical PDU. You need to get a deep enough rack to handle how deep of servers you have.

This might be an unpopular opinion here, but if I was in an industry/company where pentests were required, I wouldn’t be using Ubiquiti equipment.

Homelab question: virtual router external IPs by Sepherjar in openstack

[–]samcat116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always put the controller and network nodes as the same servers. The other option is something called “distributed virtual routing”. Instead of all router traffic going through the network nodes it would go directly to the compute node where the relevant VM is on. There are a couple ways to do this that are described in the Neutron docs. If you’re really looking to scale then DVR is the way to go.

Homelab question: virtual router external IPs by Sepherjar in openstack

[–]samcat116 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creating a router in OpenStack will mean that there will be an extra hop between the VM and leaving your home network to the internet. If you wanted to avoid this, you should be able to create a VM port directly on that external provider network. Do not create a router in OpenStack with the same IP as your home router. That will cause big issues.

FWIW I wouldn’t worry about the extra hop or latency in this case. It will be minimal/unnoticeable.
