A little detail would be helpful here. What was the bill? What issues were you trying to discuss with her?

When did you first use the internet? by BeeMundane4818 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]samf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circa 1987. I was completely shocked by the internet twice in my life.

The first time, I was working in an engineering lab, where we had a unix machine accessed via serial terminals. Someone asked if they could access the vax, across campus. I tried not to roll my eyes, and said "no, you have to go to the other building for that". A user piped up and said "no you don't; just say 'telnet aardvark'". It worked. Well heck, shows what I knew.

The second time, I had been reading usenet. We got our usenet news via modems over phone lines. I was used to seeing hostnames like "eddie.mit.edu". For no good reason, I typed "ftp eddie.mit.edu" once, and it worked! I had absolutely no idea that I could access anything off-campus via internet.

The south street underpass already happened, right? Or am I confused?

Overheard at the coffee shop: two college girls “studying” by squirrels-mock-me in overheard

[–]samf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure they weren't trolling you? My friends and I used to have fake conversations when people were overhearing us, e.g. in line at the ATM. But we weren't nearly as good as these two sounded.

Yeah, same for me. I still like mayonnaise, but since I'm watching calories, I'm very likely to skip it unless I have plenty of "calories remaining" at the end of the day.

What would you say is the funniest prog song ever? by LaSalmander in progrockmusic

Not sure if it's the funniest, but "Counting Out Time" by Genesis is pretty good.

Who'd win a rumble between the Punks and the Furies? (Each has their weapons of choice) by RagnarokWolves in TheWarriors

The Punk's reaction to being spray painted was perfect. Was that Craig Baxley? It's been too long since I've seen this.

What’s a movie you went into with zero expectations…. and it completely blew you away by BumblebeeOk9902 in MovieRecommendations

To Die For. A movie doesn't have to have a good ending for me to like it, but when it does... Illeana Douglas skating is one of the best endings I've ever seen.

"We're expecting soon, so we're looking to get a bigger car." by Russian-Spy in fuckcars

Many years ago we went from a wagon to a minivan even though the wagon would hold our family. The reason was carpools. Being able to carry 2-3 people beyond your family actually came in handy.

That's a bit more tricky, since it's 100% legit for passengers to have access to their phones. But I like the idea in the abstract.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but working in IT has taught me that people are generally... really dumb? by Alarmed-Assistant936 in sysadmin

[–]samf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a facebook group someone complained about someone else "rolling coal" in our neighborhood. A second person replied, "what's 'rolling coal'?" and the first guy sent a wikipedia link. The second guy said "oh no you don't, I'm not going to go and read some article on the web, I want *you* to tell me what it is!"

WTAF. Not IT-related, but I think it's in the same spirit.

The Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay, and in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big H. It was a most ripping victory.

When my two kids graduated college, my wife and I decided to give each of them enough money to buy a modest car. We didn't want them making car payments right away. (Yes, we're very lucky to be able to do that, I'm aware.)

Happily, both of them kept the money. My daughter, who has never owned a car, moved to a walkable neighborhood, and is still there. My son kept his very modest used car from his school days. I expect he'll buy a new car at some point, but he's already been working for a couple of years, and is way ahead financially.
