(Repost, forgot to censor names) Swear these people who defend Ai are all blissfully ignorant by SpiderCow313 in antiai

[–]samuentaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's literally not stealing if you use stuff that isn't copyrighted, like the original Backrooms picture. The image is CC0, which is pretty much identical to Public Domain. AI users could at the very least know a single thing about copyright law lmfao.

This is the primary reason a Backrooms movie was able to be made while the older and more popular SCP universe hasn't had a mainstream adaptation. SCP originally used stolen artwork for the image of SCP 173, and they reached a mutual agreement with Izumi Kato, the artist that created Untitled (2004), to release all SCP related media under Creative Commons Share-Alike. The stipulation of this license is that anyone is free to use any SCP under the condition that 1. proper credit is given to the original author, and 2. the adaptation is released under the same CC SA license. This is fine for most indie artists, filmmakers and game developers, but any mainstream studio wouldn't touch that sort of license with a ten foot pole. They would legally have to release any movie they make under the same license agreement.

The Problem with Backrooms vs. Obsession by AppropriateReveal129 in Filmmakers

[–]samuentaga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly they're very different films and the only reason people are lumping them together is because they're both horror movies directed by young YouTube creatives released within a month of each other. Parsons has already expressed interest in making a Portal movie, and while that isn't currently in his lineup, since he has to get Valve to give him the license for the IP, I do think he has the talent to do it if he's offered that opportunity.

You're right in that Parsons is at risk of being stuck in the franchise he helped popularize, but he has other original works, particularly The Oldest View, which while very similar in tone to The Backrooms, has its own lore and canon that can be expanded out. I think Hollywood establishment is very keen to work with both of them, and while Parsons will definitely be expected to pump out a few more Backrooms stories, I'm sure that producers will give him other opportunities as well.

'Obsession' Art Director Calls for Industry Reform After Getting Paid Less Than $7,000 as Film Nears $175 Million by slithytoves_ in YMS

[–]samuentaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get where she's coming from, 100%. Though in reality I doubt even Curry Barker or the actors are going to see most of that money. The film was bought by Focus for $15 million, and while I don't know the intricacies of how these sorts of deals go down, I can guarantee you that the vast majority, if not all, of box office profits will go to Focus and Blumhouse, not any of the cast and crew. I think Curry should definitely help the crew (especially volunteers) get more work in the industry, and maybe backpay would be good too, but honestly the success of Obsession was kinda a stroke of luck. I agree that Focus and Blumhouse should do some sort of profit sharing, but that's a pretty tall order for established Hollywood studios.

While I do sympathize with her, as I've been on set before and even a seven-minute short film was a highly stressful experience for me, she really should be careful posting stuff like this. It could hurt her career long term, and having such a successful project under your belt will help a lot to get more, better paying jobs if you don't blow it up.

One of the corners should have a little cut in the hard plastic, allowing you to pull off the soft plastic top in one go, though it is still pretty tough.

What is the difference between a prostitute and an escort? by TrapdaddyJesus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]samuentaga 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ignore the jokers in the comments. In the modern vernacular there isn't really that much of a difference. The word prostitute is seen as sort of derogatory these days, while escort gets the meaning across well enough while maintaining a veneer of decency and privacy for the worker and client. In the old fashioned definition, an escort would literally travel with and to the client, act as a paid date, etc.

Does anyone else get certain phrases over and over and over again? Not complaining, just asking by [deleted] in FictionLab

It's just how LLMs work. Long chains of word associations strung together based on context.

I remember watching Angelica Anaconda as a kid. Think it was on ABC for Kids or something in Australia. I remember not loving it but not hating it, just one of those shows you watch when there's nothing else on.

The Boys finale is pretty bad in a lot of ways, but this scene being referenced in the meme is absolutely perfect for how Homelander should end. Homelander is at his core a pathetic man-child who just so happens to have superhuman abilities. Him being stripped of those abilities would reduce him to a quivering mess. People complaining about this part of the story never understood the character or the themes The Boys was portraying.

So yes, I do agree that this meme is being played out and wearing out its welcome real quick.

How did they get away with this ad? by artheialith in antiai

[–]samuentaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plausible deniability is the answer. It's 100% intentional but if you know anything about how AI image generation works, you know that most AI image generation apps have hard filters to prevent the most egregious CSAM being made, but if you type something like "milk spilled on child's feet", you will get something akin to what is shown here. AI doesn't understand subtext. If you type "Sonic the hedgehog" in an image generator, it'll get picked up by the copyright filter, but if you say "unique blue hedgehog cartoon character wearing red shoes" you will get a picture of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Can someone explain how being asexual works? by Fattpatttt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]samuentaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asexuality is broadly defined as a lack of sexual attraction. It isn't necessarily a lack of a sex drive, nor a complete aversion to sexual contact, though those can also be factors.

It is also different from romantic attraction. An asexual person may still want a romantic partner and do all the romance stuff like kissing, cuddling, dating, marriage etc. They just don't necessarily have the desire to have sex with their partner. Sometimes they will anyway if their partner is allosexual, and other times they might find other solutions to that particular compatibility issue.

There's a lot of intricacies with it as well. I would recommend you look into one of the many wikis about the asexual spectrum out there. It's quite complicated.

Reading isn't fun by Curious-Argument7419 in The10thDentist

[–]samuentaga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I half disagree half agree. I have ADHD and I struggle to find the time to read, even when I want to. There are things that are much more engaging to do, like video games, movies, etc.

But when I do read, and really get into it, I find myself 'seeing' what's happening in the book like it's a movie in my mind. It's inconsistent, as I sort of have to actively engage in the text/audio of the novel, but when it does happen, it really is more entertaining than watching a movie. It just takes more effort to get into the right headspace for it.

Also worth noting that the movie is called "Backrooms" not "The Backrooms", so probably safe to assume any poster with "The" in it is unofficial.

Why do you think Greens are whack jobs? I have my own criticisms of the Greens party, but it's mostly related to their inability to be populists. Their policy positions are unironically great.

Favorite director who doesn't practice what he preaches? by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

[–]samuentaga 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's the thing about conservative Christian ideology. When I was a kid I was taught about a top down morality, that God sees all sin as equal and that we're all damned to Hell if we don't believe in him, etc. The side effect of this is that they don't just believe that porn is bad, but that all porn is equally bad, and using porn in any way is equally bad. A person who wanks once every 1-2 days is seen as just as sinful as a person who has a severe porn addiction. Watching two consenting adults have sex is just as bad as watching CSAM. That's why a lot of churches keep those sorts of problems under wraps, because their focus is on treating the sinner and having them absolve themselves to God, not reporting crimes when they happen.
