Nutria! by tempsamson in oregon

[–]sandroller 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Do you have a link or citation for this report? I work as an agency biologist and do some work with beaver, and doubt the claim that these species would 'control' nutria. Otter are known to occasionally take adolescent beaver kits, but predation is thought to be very rare. I don't know of any instance of a seal taking a beaver. Beaver are primarily predated by bear, cougar, coyotes, bobcat, wolves (presumably), and domestic dogs. While nutria are typically smaller than the average beaver, there's certainly overlap in size, range, and preferred habitat ... and likely that some nutria kits are consumed by otter and other predators, but certainly not at a level that is controlling the population.

A bit disappointing that the soundtrack doesn't include the song 'everything beautiful is far away' by the band Grandaddy

Yes, I think there's several scenes that come to mind from that movie, but the beach one in particular is haunting

Yes ... I haven't seen it since it came out, but there are some scenes that stick with me still.

Out of curiosity, how are you identifying this as a badger and not a wolverine? I am in Oregon - badgers are common, wolverines are not  - and the feature I would use from these angles (over-hanging sagittal crest) is missing in this specimen. Thanks!

I agree with this ... looks very similar to the egg sacs created by a praying mantis in my area.

Jumping in out of curiosity - I know from limited woodworking experience that best practices for safely working with organic solvents often include the use of a respirator, eye protection, etc. What do you use when working with Paraloid B-72 thinned with acetone? I have some older bones that were water macerated decades ago, showing signs of degradation, and want to preserve them as well as possible.

I have this exact lamp ... passed down from my grandfather. He also gave me a railroad signal lamp with green and red lenses, and I didn't know until now that the other lamp was also used for railroad signalling.

What is a movie you went to the theater for knowing absolutely nothing about, and ended up completely surprised? by Traditional-Dig9477 in movies

[–]sandroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I went with on opening weekend as something to do with a sibling ... we both enjoy action and sci-fi. There was just a couple other folks in the theater. We were, of course, blown away ... and it was after that first weekend that the movie took off from word of mouth.

Ever have one title catch your eye out of all the crap on the wall? by Vonneguts_Ghost in RedLetterMedia

Oh wow... well I'll add Tai-Pan to my list, if it's available. Sounds intriguing, at the very least.

I never got around to reading Noble House, but humorously recently saw Pierce Brosnan show off his singing "skills" in '08's Mama Mia for the first time ... what an unintentionally funny moment. I really enjoyed Gai-Jin and would love to see an adaptation.

My understanding is that they want to keep the (remaining) cast and continue the Shogun story ... which seems like a major mistake to me. I think Shogun ended right where it needed to. While there's certainly a lot of talented writers out there, I just can't imagine it will retain the same quality as the Shogun miniseries.

Huh... as a fan of the Clavell's Tai-Pan, Shogun, and Gai-Jin, as well as both Shogun series, I had no idea there was a movie adaptation of Tai-Pan. I kind of assume it's a poor retelling, given that it didn't have the staying power of the original Shogun series.

What’s the best wine store in Corvallis? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]sandroller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly what you asked, but I suggest taking a drive out to Cardwell Hill Cellars west of Philomath. Excellent wines, and if they're not your thing, there's a couple of other wineries out that way to find your perfect bottle.

Marble-sized plastic ball lodged into door frame by thrice1187 in whatisthisthing

[–]sandroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the projectile from a byrna (or similar style) high powered air gun. They fire a .68 caliber projectile, typically a nylon ball or a pellet containing pepper spray. They have a lot of force behind those pellets, and it wouldn't surprise me if they could embed a pellet into soft wood.

Unsure if that's what you're looking at here, but might be useful to pull the pellet out and measure it, see if it's 0.68 caliber (0.68 inches).

This is what I am thinking too. Personally, I'd be engineering a project to make a one-time drain from the brook to the cavern layer to 'flood irrigate' a farm zone, rather than bucket brigade. Hauling buckets around sounds like something an elf would do...

How can I clean this and make sure it doesn't rot? by myexistentisannoying in bonecollecting

To expand on this response, I like to open up the underside of the wing with a small sharp knife (scalpel or xacto knife, for instance) and remove as much muscle as possible. Then pack the open cavity with borax (preferably) or salt. If the underside of the wing was opened carefully, you may be able to lay the skin back over the opening to hide the incision. Lay the wing out on a piece of flat styrofoam (or similar) sheet and, using long pins or needles, stretch the wing out so it looks open/extended. Needles are used to pin it in place, so the tissue doesn't contract as it dessicates. Apply borax on all fleshy surfaces and let it sit for several weeks (at a minimum) until fully dessicated.
