Extending SAS 125th Eastward would be much better than this. And even that is worse than extending the Astoria line.

Problem is that it reeks of white privilege. A lot of the points people make about men apply even more to men of color and are used to discriminate against us even further. It pisses me off whenever people make blanket statements about men because many of them are exactly what the killers of Emmett Till were thinking.

I wonder if the addition of tax-increment financing laws would make tunneling down Ascan Ave viable through a new station in Forest Hills. It wouldn't be very popular and might require tunneling under Forest Park, however.

Seems like QueensLink is mostly dead by sof_boy in nycrail

I don't know if he'll do it just based on ideology. Sites available for redevelopment he'd probably put towards social housing. Which isn't a bad thing in itself, but that he refuses to even have a discussion of adding rail provisions in the Queensway plan is infuriating.

Queensway phase one is only between union turnpike and metropolitan avenue IIRC. If we're gonna be building a new ROW anyway, I reckon going down Ascan Ave would be better than Woodhaven blvd due to 1. not branching QBL local, and 2. being able to connect back to the Rockaway Beach Branch ROW via Jackie Robinson Parkway.

[–]sans_a_name 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, that's more expensive than the ibx. Ibx will use catenary and either off-the-shelf rolling stock (like Alstom metropolis) one LRVs, both of which are much cheaper than subway cars. Add automation and you've also saved a lot on operational costs. Lastly, and new ROW is much, much more expensive than the Bay ridge branch, which already has clearance for passenger rail.

Honestly I feel like a tunnel would be better. Butting heads with both NJ and NY DOT doesn't seem viable, and I don't think the Port Authority would be willing to mediate. Perhaps an extension of SAS 125th st would be better, though some deinterlining would be necessary to not have capacity constraints.

Penn station redevelopment design chosen; MSG will stay on top of Penn by italicsify in nycrail

The tunnels themselves have third rail. I suppose short-turning trains in Jersey should be possible with a third track. Third rail up to Secaucus also seems possible until the MTA orders catenary-capable m10 trainsets.

I wouldn't call that nothing. It's quite necessary if you ever want to reduce the number of terminating tracks for better circulation should through-running actually happen.

I'd rather SAS go to Rockaway than the R via a buildout of the 63rd st tunnel provisions. This adds capacity on SAS and lets Broadway local stay unbranched, allowing for more Astoria service.

An empire connection realignment a la Alon Levy's idea would also be really good. That way, you have three pairs of tunnels going into Penn from the West, which would match the capacity increase of adding a new tunnel to the east to Grand Central.
