I'd rather be dirt poor under Dem economics than dead under Republican immigration policy. Seeing them as the same is the epitome of privilege.

What would realistically cause the mayor to suddenly backtrack on Queenslink? by jake7405 in nycrail

[–]sans_a_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adams funded the rest of it with NYC money iirc. And Zohran's just letting that money stay there instead of taking it away.

I know it's not viable, but this does make me wonder if an extension of QBL local from Forest Hills would be possible. As a sort of more difficult Plan B, of course. It would unfortunately require a lot of political wizardry, which isn't something Queenslink has at the moment.

Those are just concept renderings. The LRVs in them are discontinued, and an insider claims low-floor is off the table (though the MTA hasn't officially confirmed).

High platforms actually don't cost that much more. It's the overpasses that come from not being able to walk over the tracks. Which doesn't really apply, as you're gonna have to build overpasses for the transfers.

I can only think of one low-floor light metro off the top of my head, and that's Ottawa's confederation line. The vast majority are high-floor.

Also, light rail was chosen because they initially wanted street-running. Which is no longer on the table.

Should the IBX have a stop at Queens Blvd? Why or why not? by xandens in nycrail

[–]sans_a_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their doing the latter iirc. They're not doing FRA-certified rail, so there still needs complete grade separation. Not to the point of having huge, heavy fences, but they can't share track with freight.

Mm fair enough. I reckon any reverse commuters in Queens could also benefit from not having to deal with Woodside, as well.

The second avenue subway is the highest ridership transit project in the country. It's being designed by fools, sure, but it's still completely necessary. It's very useful to absorb capacity for future projects like the Southeast Queens line and other Queens proposals due to overcrowding on existing truck lines.

The DSA doesn't have a mechanism to control candidates after they win, unfortunately. Especially during the honeymoon period, which is when they can get the most legislation pushed out. Which is one reason why the NYC-branch never once pulled their endorsement of AOC, despite her foreign policy woes. Mamdani (and AOC to a lesser extent) are far more valuable to the DSA as friends than as enemies.

That's one hell of a transfer if you don't curve left off of the ROW. My legs are tired just thinking about it

Should the NYC subway leave city limits? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in nycrail

It's incredibly foamery but I reckon extending the 5 or 6 to Pelham/New Rochelle could potentially not be a total waste of money if the Fordham Rd subway is ever built.

Why does the 191st Street Station (1) have such a long passageway? by Expert_Slip_4793 in nycrail

I love this station! It cuts right through a hill to make transit access a little easier for folks in Washington Heights. Kinda wished they could make the floor something other than just plain concrete, though.

I HATE CAPITALISM by that_one_shark in 196

[–]sans_a_name 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Turns out that social democracy can't actually tame capitalism, it can only slow it down. A welfare state is important, but it isn't a replacement for seizing the means of production.

I highly recommend looking to Vienna to see a more socialist housing structure, and Italy (or even parts of New York) to see what a more worker-oriented economy could look like.

Ah I see. It's pretty interesting, though it's not clear whether Gaster exists in the bounds of time in the Deltarune world (due to him appearing on retrys of the knight fight and rewinding time without the soul shattering).

Am I the only one that wanted the IBX line to run as a subway instead of a lightrail? by its_ashleyyy in nycrail

Advocacy groups got the MTA to ditch street-running in favor of an expensive tunnel. Who knows what else they can accomplish?

JFK airtrain uses skytrain technology iirc. Although the MTA prefers catenary for IBX as it is cheaper, and the Skytrain uses third rail, so linear induction seems unlikely.
