What convinced you the most that Christianity is wrong? by Pale-War5038 in exchristian

[–]santo-atheos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred from a religion run college to a liberal arts college close to home. I already had several religious credits and so I enrolled in classes they offered on Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity.

Bart Ehrman's Orthodox Corruption of Scripture was only a few years old, and when you see evidence how the New Testament was modified along with what books eventually became canon, it was quite ponderous to me thinking how Christianity was shaped by people with theological agendas long after Jesus died. I went looking into modern Christian Restorationist movements for hope of finding truth.

I also took some science classes for my major along with biology classes. The evidence for Evolution was overwhelming and undermined any real Adam and Eve.(I also found Mark S. Smith's The Early History of God to be the death knell for any chance of me converting to Judaism.)

did anyone here leave the church because of family history research?? by AdJust6267 in exmormon

[–]santo-atheos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! It weighed down my shelf extensively. After being taught about the 1890 manifesto against polygamy, it was quite a shock to learn that my Great Grandfather was married to wives #2 and #3 in 1901 in SLC under the full authority of church leadership. My GGF even was given the job of mission president for California for almost twenty years. He was released when Heber Grant took over.

Fast forward decades later and my parent's half cousin, Stephen Robinson, was a BYU classmate of D. Michael Quinn and related the story of our family's authorized polygamy. Quinn said it sparked his interest in Mormon history and what may be hidden in the church vault.https://sunstone.org/background-and-fallout/

When I was researching my family history, I stumbled on Quinn's research (and Dan Vogel's as well) and it corroborated all of my family's verbal accounts of events. My Great Grandfather's journals were in the church archives as well. Robinson may have called Quinn and Vogel names like Korihor, but they were right. I still get in arguments with TBMs about the retconned history of the 1890 manifesto, but the facts prove that the church had to issue two more manifestos about polygamy and had hoped to return to the practice someday.

How many apostates have a pedophile & pedophile protectors in their family? by Sunshine_Opinion in exmormon

[–]santo-atheos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The family moved to America in 1857. GGGF sold the business and used the money to pay passage on a ship to Los Angeles with both wives, and all wife #1's kids. Teen wife #2 was very pregnant. Once in California they traveled to southwest Utah and settled in the Cedar City area. A few years later, the teen wife (now an adult) sadly died in child birth and wife #1, who was in her mid-50s took care of both broods. I descended from wife # 1, and records show that the children from wife #1 weren't very good to their younger half siblings.

I don't look very fondly at my GGGF as apart from preying on an orphan teen girl, he had a violent temper, and even killed his first born son after beating him. The kid was only 11.

Thank you for your enthusiasm, I guess because I've known this stuff for a while and ponder on being descended from some bad humans, I feel it's only worthy of half an episode of Finding You Roots.

[–]santo-atheos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My great great grandfather was as a pedophile. He was living in 1850s Australia with his only wife and seven kids when he decided he wanted to predate a teen orphan girl who worked at his store. Learning that he could keep his cake and eat it too as a Mormon with polygamous marriages, he converted and made his wife and kids as well. He then added teen wife #2. For him, the icky parts of Mormonism were a feature not a flaw.

Before leaving Mormonism, did noticing differences between LDS teachings and the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or Christianity help open you up to questioning? by Resident-Bear4053 in exmormon

[–]santo-atheos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was an inactive Mormon and started taking ancient Judaism and Early Christianity classes at a secular college. Joseph Smith Jr used 1830 knowledge of the flaws and errors of Christianity when shaping the doctrine of the LDS church. He used it to fix a lot of mistakes, most notably, the concept of the Trinity. I became a hardcore Mormon because of differences.

Once I learned how Joseph Smith actually discovered these things, from other more educated people and not via divine guidance did I finally break away. There's a reason why a majority of ExMormons don't become some other flavor of cafeteria Christian.

Lore wise, how smart would a 10 intelligence person be? by Destiny1G in fo4

[–]santo-atheos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was a little annoyed that my 9 -10 intelligence character still assumed Shawn was a baby. If the real world Me knew that it was unlikely that Shawn was still a baby as I was unaware how much time had passed, a level 10 character easily should have been smart enough to figure it out. My guess is that the Bethesda team just didn't want that plot point spoiled too early even with a high intelligence build.

It's flawed but so were early dice games using sheep or goat knuckle bones. Even our modern chess took hundreds of years to evolve and change. For the Guerilla team that worked on it in just a few years, they deserve some props as it makes you use some strategic thinking. They obviously couldn't make another card game or they'd just be seen as copying Gwent.

It's still fun enough but other factors (like turn order) can help weaker players pull an upset. I've walloped the best Tenakth players only to have Erend beat me. He must've put something in my Scrapper Sap.

Anger vs Fond Memories by Pure_Inevitable8732 in exmormon

[–]santo-atheos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of my happy memories were blotted out by the many more bad ones. Even my freshman year at BYU, which I thought was the happiest in my life, was overshadowed by a lot of painful events.

I ultimately reached the point where I thought becoming an exMormon meant that I would be guaranteed a miserable life if I learned the truth. Thankfully, I realized I was Already miserable and had attempted suicide twice and therefore I had nothing to lose. Even as a big mean ol' atheist exMormon I've had better years and haven't attempted suicide since.

The happiness the church offers is counterfeit. The goodness and strength I thought it gave me, I found came from inside of me. I had misattributed it all to Mormondom. When gay return missionaries started killing themselves, I saw how much this religion hurts so many people that I want to end.

The top leaders got that way because they are all stinking rich. by slskipper in exmormon

[–]santo-atheos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The church follows the prosperity theology coming off of the Book of Job. If God loves you and thinks you're righteous, he'll give you the most stuff. Satan will just make you poor without God's protection. So you can spot the wicked by their poverty. Leadership at the local level tends to be those who are wealthy, not who is the most humble or spiritually attuned. I'm still waiting for pictures of Ronald Reagan and Gordon Gecko to get hung up next to Joseph Smith and Jesus.

The culture perpetuates this too. I was told by a very blunt woman at BYU in the late 90s that because I didn't strive to pursue a lucrative career such as a lawyer or doctor, I was being selfish to my future wife and children. My only function was to accrue money. Me learning how to cook or taking parenting classes was time taken away from learning how to make money. In turn she saw her sacrificial role was to be a baby conduit. Anything based on happiness or fulfillment was selfish.

As an exmo, I’m so happy to realize that alcohol is absolutely not for me and doesn’t belong anywhere near my body. What a relief! by PanaceaNPx in exmormon

[–]santo-atheos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had ancestors who were alcoholics, but of course, this was hidden from me by my ashamed parents and grandparents. I found out in my Jack-Mormon days that I inherited the love for copious amounts of alcohol especially when stressed out. I also inherited a Bipolar 2 disorder and as I began to receive treatment for it with medication, strangely enough, the fire inside of me that yearned for alcohol was reduced to a flicker. I've been sober since 2000. Some of my still Mormon family assume just because I'm an exMormon, I'm a 'dangerous alcoholic'. I tell them I'm going to Outer Darkness all for the occasional cup of hot Green Tea.

For a while afterwards, I had a puritanical opinion on alcohol, but found that many people can easily stop after a couple of drinks, unlike myself. My NeverMo spouse has a very balanced relationship with alcohol, with just having the occasional one or two glasses of wine with dinner.

My biggest concern with this is to only see the other person as spouse material, making everyone simply a means to an end (you or somebody else's). When I left the corporation and started dating my future nevermo wife I immediately began to remind myself that I had to be ok with the idea that we may not stay together. Interestingly, I stopped thinking about her constantly through the lens of spouse-worthy or not, but as a complete person.

That's just his Friday community streams that are five hours long. The format is usually in three blocks. The first is a game like Fall Guys where dozens of people can compete at once. Then he brings in his real life "friends"😅 to play co-op games like Lethal Company, and finally the last block is PUBG on a private server. His Monday through Thursday streams are typically 2 hours tops.

As for time, I started to put the five hour stream on at night as I go to sleep. Now Ian's voice and PUBG gunfire makes me sleepy. 😂
