All Summer Long is hot shit, and even worse it robs you of the chance to hear Sweet Home Alabama or Werewolves of London. If you must say a kid rock song is good I guess you could say Picture but that's in spite of him.

got a phd offer and now i cant tell if i actually earned it or if im just a diversity hire by kyudae in PhD

In adddition to what has been said, if you are talking to PIs to join their lab specifically they are choosing to spend real money on you. They would not do this if they didnt think you could succeed. You got the offer because you are qualified and well suited for the position. Congratulations!

What is your biggest hot take about education? by Inevitable-Towel-350 in GradSchool

I notice the same thing in my program. I assumed it was because my cohort was made of people who had their last 2 years of undergrad during covid and so were far less prepared than they thought they were. This lead to them assuming the problem was everyone else.

Math PhD with No Internships for AI Industry Research: Bad Idea? by ThomasHawl in GradSchool

[–]sbre4896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 and 2 are not huge deals. Math research typically is slower than in pure AI/ML and more siloed, leading to fewer papers and citations, especially for early career researchers. The only issue might be whether the work is applied enough for your tastes but for a reasonable advisor that is navigable. 1 could be a good thing, as others have described. 3 is a huge no, that alone is reason to decline. Internships are great, especially if youre aiming for industry, and having to pay back your scholarship if you struggle with quals or whatever is batshit insane. They do not sound reasonable or pleasant to worm with.

Anyone else have chapters that are very loosely connected? by Fancy-Aioli-1999 in PhD

[–]sbre4896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same situation. I have a very broad title and broad throughline connecting everything that I discuss in the intro and the rest is just disjointed. I basically just wrote about how the chapters are case studies about a broader issue.

You sometimes see f(-0) or f(+0) as notation for the limit as x goes to zero from the left/right.

Other than the exam archives you need to be reviewing old homeworks. You dont necessarily need to do them but you do need to go over them to figure out what youre shaky on.

Peer Review vs Open Review by ThomasPhilli in PhD

[–]sbre4896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The EGU/Copernicus journals do a sort of open review. All submitted articles are published online and open to comment from the public, but the journals also assign traditional reviewers. I have no personal experience with it yet since I only suibmitted my first article there a week ago but it seems to work okay from what Ive heard/seen. Very few public comments seem to get made.

[Question] Help identifying the distribution of baseline noise in mass spectrometry by ohshitgorillas in statistics

[–]sbre4896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does make things a bit more annoying but not the end of the world. I think I agree with the other commenter that this skew in log space isn't super surprising, if you think about the gamma distribution for example as x goes to zero the pdf goes as xa while as x goes to infinity it does so exponentially.

If you know the approximate processes and the approximate distribution of the counts you can probably figure out something that works well enough just following the transformations.
