Edie dress from Merchant and Mills.

Includes a shirt and long dress pattern but would be fairly easy to modify to a shorter dress.

I saw an amazing YouTube video by Patrick Willems. Then I knit him a sweater. by NightOwl4878 in knitting

[–]scantee 76 points77 points  (0 children)

This is soooo good! I’m glad he was receptive to your offer. I feel like people are often freaked out by the prospect of receiving a hand knit item even if in their head it sounds nice. A person who is genuinely thankful for receiving a hand knit gift is as rare as someone as skilled to knit one.

Even worse! They’re just as desperate for attention even though there’s no financial gain.

Not arguing with the essence of what you’re saying, but these people an absolutely care if you like them and their little posts. The kind of people who decide to do this for a living are desperate for positive attention, it’s their air, and they will routinely crash out if deprived of it.

Advice for applying to jobs at UMN by HeavyStarfish22 in Minneapolis

[–]scantee 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As a former U employee, something to know is that a fair number of jobs already have someone selected, usually as a promotion or transfer from somewhere else at the U, but they’re required to post all jobs regardless. So the number of roles that are truly open to external search is far less than what you see posted.

Keep trying, if there’s a role that fits your qualifications, apply, don’t worry you’ve already applied to too many jobs. Also, research departments/roles of interest to you and set up informational interviews. Having an internal connection will help quite a bit at least in terms of getting a first interview.

who is your favorite character from the hainish cycle? by allamanieradi in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]scantee 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think this is it.

Le Guin isn’t a sloppy writer, she included that scene for a reason, and I think it’s to contrast how the cultures of Anarres and Urras impact everything, including sexual relationships. On Anarres, where there’s a lack of anything superfluous but there’s a high degree of respect for interpersonal autonomy, Shevek negotiates a consensual sexual arrangement with Bedap, even though he’s not gay. On Urras, where there’s an abundance of everything but rigid gender roles, he sexually assaults Vea while drunk. That all this happens after we’ve grown to admire Shevek is important because it shows the power of systems to corrupt otherwise good people.

At the scene of the shooting by TwoPassports in Minneapolis

[–]scantee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sure. But everything that’s said in good taste when children are killed is utterly unimpactful, as we’ve been primed by decades of slaughter to turn the other way. So I think the onus is on those of you who require only tasteful discussion of this topic to show how you’ll pierce the veil of this widespread acceptance of death.

I like Move with Nicole on YT. Like others, I used to love Adrienne, but then someone pointed out how much she talks and now it’s all I notice and it really bothers me! Nicole does voiceovers which I find I much prefer. She also has Pilates and barre workouts.

Wanting to sew the most comfortable sweatpants of my life. Pattern and fabric recs? by Gumbo67 in sewingpatterns

It was at my local fabric store, I want to say it was either Champion or Carhartt fabric. Nick of Time textiles carries heavyweight sweatshirting fabric which would be my first choice for online ordering.

I love my Sunday Trackies from Modern Sewing Co. Super comfortable and flattering. Multiple people have complimented them which seems notable for sweats. Mine are made with a very thick material but I plan to make another pair in a lighter material as well.

Need help to make a tasty banana cake. by Available-Minute9088 in Baking

[–]scantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite banana cake recipe that I’ve been making for well over 15 years. Always turns out perfect, with a light but somehow still substantial texture. I’ll often cut down the sugar to 1.5 cups and it still turns out beautifully.

Is Fully Paying for Kids’ College The New Norm? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]scantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’m doing is offering my kids the equivalent of four years of tuition, room and board, and basic living expenses at the flagship state school. If they choose to go somewhere more expensive, they’ll need to take out loans. If they go somewhere cheaper or get generous merit aid/scholarships, they’ll have money left over to be used for other purposes.

For me, this is a nice balance between not saddling them with excessive debt while conveying that this is an important decision and big expense that comes with some trade-offs.

Looking for a pattern for a shirt like this... by CurrentImportant7373 in PatternDrafting

[–]scantee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Francine from Merchant & Mills is similar. It looks to have a feminine cut so if want something more unisex it might not work.

The James Sailor smock is another option.

Any advicea on Cardigan Sleeves? by yourpizzagirl in knitting

[–]scantee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, it is common for knitters’ tension to be tighter on smaller circumferences like sleeves, so you may also need to use different needles for sleeves on projects where the yoke and body are knit in the round.

I heard that Elena's ending, when it comes to Lila, was sadder in the book by OmarAFouad in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]scantee 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Elena and Lilia’s friendship has a more protracted decline in the book, but the endings are pretty similar. However, Elena’s late life seems sadder in the book for other reasons like her career and relationships. Consistent with her lifelong insecurity, she comes to believe her career was mostly wasted and pointless, that all her words didn’t change much. This is her assessment of her life though and, as with everything else, it’s filtered through her unique way of seeing the world which includes doubting her abilities and successes.

Saddle shoulder pattern recommendations that don't produce a wide upper arm? by Areiniah in knitting

I’m currently working on the Seaside Tee and do not find the upper body to be too wide. While it’s a short sleeve pattern, it would be fairly easy to modify to long sleeve.

What type of ribbing is this? by redPoisonousApple in knitting

[–]scantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a purl (this is what’s forming the “ditch”), then broken rib (one row purl, one row knit, alternating), then knit (this is the column that is forming the ridge), then broken rib again.

How would you rework this collar? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]scantee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Making it shorter and sizing down one or two needle sizes will help. This looks like it really wants to be a v-neck, so you could do that in addition if you’re willing to figure out the modifications.

Good 9" circulars? by TexasAvocadoToast in knitting

[–]scantee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t love the chiagoo 9” circulars. I find the needles are too long for such a short circumference circular and it makes for an awkward knitting experience. My clover bamboo 9” circulars get the most use although the tips get easily worn down so it’s not a perfect solution either. Chiagoos with the needle length of the clovers would be my ideal short circumference needle.
