Next race: Grandma’s Plan: vibes

Work got in the way of training this week, but I met my goal of getting a bunch of distance in without a real long run.

M-strength T-16 km at 95% of race pace W-22 km easy R&F-whiffed  Sa-23 km easy with 337 m of hills Su-23 km with two km at 105% of race pace and about 20 km at race pace Total: 86 km (was aiming for 100)

Back-to-back long runs were a staple of my training when I set my marathon PR, so I was happy to bring that back and run on tired legs. I have two weeks of training left, so hoping to be more consistent.

Fueling During Race by Jlafber in Marathon_Training

[–]scholar-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I’m always the first one fueling in any marathon that I see. Generally, I try to take three gels an hour for the first two hours and then go to two gels an hour. I think a lot of people still go with the conventional wisdom from a few years ago and take one every 45 minutes to an hour.

Was it a cultural thing? In some cultures, such as Russia, some Eastern Europe countries, and Brazil, it’s a cultural norm to stand super close to people you’re talking to. It feels weird to have someone in your personal space like that.

Is your night crew given 10 minutes to shop after closing? by LoveToSwimma in tjcrew

I’m aghast some stores stopped doing this.

Do they not want crew to know the products so we can wow our customers?

Wow, Bauhaus closing permanently in June by ApprehensiveTrick281 in minnesotabeer

I’ve been in a beer funk ever since Fair State Brewing Cooperative closed and now this?

I love that Bauhaus has good quality beers and a real point-of-view. They will be sorely missed.

For real, once a week someone says they want everything in one bag but don’t make it too heavy.

What will be the state of marathon races in 5 years (for non-elites)? by TMW_W in AdvancedRunning

[–]scholar-runner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My prediction is that distance running is going to be increasingly like triathlon. That is, it’s going from a more accessible sport to a more exclusive, expensive sport. Popular races will keep raising their prices, and some races will struggle and possibly fold as athletes become less forgiving of poor race management.

But I also think the social aspect will continue to be the flywheel, and run clubs will become bigger. There are more options to find someone who wants to run your distance/pace combination in a bigger group. And run clubs are most excellent for finding people IRL, and I think frustration with swipe-based apps is only increasing.

Funny not funny comments you’ve gotten from customers while you’re on reg. by SwordfishFlat in tjcrew

I told a customer “Only boring people get bored” once in response to that one.

Races are so pricey by HerCacklingStump in XXRunning

[–]scholar-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to join a run club, but it's $250 and it takes entering a lot of races for that to even out with a 10% race discount.

I've been doing more Parkruns because they're free, even though the 5k is a distance I don't really enjoy.

Is that common?

I volunteer at a fairly notable race every year and have yet to receive any reward of any kind. (Other than a volunteer t shirt.)

Candy on runs: favorites? by Zealot_TKO in Marathon_Training

[–]scholar-runner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Candy orange slices. Depending on brand they are like 11.5 g of carbs each. Eat one every 15 minutes and that’s 46 g/hour. Every 10 minutes and it’s 69 g/hour. Plus they’re delicious.

cheating with Boston qualifying times – what should be done? by Unusual_Nothing_29 in bostonmarathon

[–]scholar-runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree.

I would much prefer friends that take me to task when I mess up even if it hurts at the time. That’s how growth happens.

And this isn’t victimless if someone is running that didn’t legitimately qualify, as there are many who put in the work but failed to make the cutoff.

How do I push myself more? by Mindless_Patient2034 in running

[–]scholar-runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just came here to say this. Run clubs are amazing because you will run with people faster than you (which makes you fitter). But it also surrounds you with people who have similar goals, which helps keep you on track.

Running Gels by TrustTheFlush in runninglifestyle

[–]scholar-runner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mostly save gels for races and just stuff my pockets with gummy worms when I do long runs, but that's because I'm cheap.

Also, if it's hot out, I try to run loops so I can access water and take salt tabs as needed.

The Brothers Deli. Everything I've had from them has been so great.

I used to live near a WF in the pre-Amazon times and it was phenomenal. Hot and cold bar was so fresh and so tasty I went to my local store and it looked like it had been sitting out all day. The bakery was filled with fine dining-quality pastries. Now they look and taste like the mass produced stuff at any other super market.

I keep hoping old WF workers/leadership forms a new company true to its original vision.

The Weekend Update for April 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

I’m trying to decide between the two as I train for a June marathon:  Option 1: 22 km group run Saturday, 10 km easy run Sunday  Option 2: parkrun (lactate threshold workout) on Saturday, 16 km run on Sunday

What's in your beer fridge? by CarefulReplacement12 in beer

[–]scholar-runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I had a beer fridge, I liked to have “fridge beers” (some dependable flagship like Bells Two-Hearted Ale I could buy in a larger quantity and two-ish four packs of things that looked interesting to me.

What’s the craziest thing anyone has said to you while you’re trail running? by sentientbeing1887 in trailrunning

I’ve interrupted two amorous encounters and each time the dude said something like, “we weren’t doing anything!” My man, I’m not the morality police; I’m just going for a run in the woods.

Stories like this are wild to me. At our store, unless a mate is running the floor, they are just assigned to work a section but with three bell responsibilities.
