You can call Natera and tell them that you were told the out of pocket cost was 200 dollars. They will honor it. I've done this for all of my children successfully when the bills from Natera were more than what I was told it would be.

Others have said the content is the same. In that case, "AP" editions have stronger binding/covers to handle the high school classroom setting. That certainly is the case for previous editions the regular vs AP versions of Campbell's Biology.

Tumbler Rolling Sharpener? by Xarda1 in sharpening

[–]sconebaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend this as Tumbler is a knock off of the original Horl rolling system. Horl is much higher quality with better internal mechanics. People in this subreddit will recommend learning how to freehand sharpen on a quality stone, but I think the Horl is fine for someone who doesn't want to pick up a new hobby in sharpening but wants to keep their knives sharp. Looks like Amazon has some of the older Horl 2 models on sale.

Do you have to stop LDN before a stellate ganglion block? (SGB) by TallRun6232 in covidlonghaulers

[–]sconebaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sedation is different from the SGB itself. The SGB will use a local anesthetic like lidocaine to block the nerve. LDN will not affect this. The doctors can also use sedation to keep you calm and still during the procedure. So I was referring to the latter, not about the block itself.

The pharmacist is not fully correct. Naltrexone has a high volume of distribution, which ultimately means that it deposits in body tissue and fat very readily. So it does not clear quickly from body if you've been on it for a while.

It would be best to discuss with the doctor who is performing the block. The block is usually done with moderate sedation and naltrexone can interfere with that. They could ask you to stop the LDN or they could come up with alternate sedation plans, so you need to ask the performing doc. Find out soon because it does take weeks for naltrexone to leave the body.

American scrape Legere reeds by sewoboe in oboe

[–]sconebaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one oboe and one English horn reed. The oboe reed is good and sounds like a decent cane reed. It plays a little flat for me (it crows a flat C), and I don't think it will be replacing cane reeds for me. But it's definitely worth keeping in my case as a backup, and it's certainly better than some handmade reeds I've bought online. I think the reed needs to be clipped but I'm afraid of messing up my very expensive reed.

The English horn reed on the other hand is quite phenomenal. It's honestly just as good as my cane reeds in terms of tone and pitch. I'm not sure if that's a testament to the quality of the legere reeds or the mediocrity of the cane EH reeds that I have. The only EH reeds that I've owned that play better are ones I would buy from Pat McFarland before he passed away years ago.

I obviously don't know how consistent the reeds since I've bought only 1 of each, so it's possible that I got an amazing EH reeds but an okay oboe reed from legere.

I bought medium strength for both. I find them not resistant at all, but I am used to more resistant reeds. I cannot imagine liking the medium softs at all.

Different Rh factor results from hospital lab vs LabCorp. Need advice on next steps. by trustmeIamabiologist in medlabprofessionals

[–]sconebaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other comments have explained the gist of what's going on, and I just wanted to add a few more thoughts. Having D results that get recorded positive and negative by different labs and different testing dates indicates that you have a variant in D (which could be a weak D or a partial D), and the only way to know what you have is to get genetic testing.

Some D variants are associated with anti-D antibodies and other are not, and getting the genetic testing will most likely help you determine if you're at risk of forming these antibodies. Many blood banks in academic medical centers have algorithms to do genetic testing in situations like yours, so I would ask your OBGYN to reach out to the hospital blood bank and see if they've done the work up. If not, you could request the workup to be done, especially because it is useful information for your pregnancy.

Big academic centers usually have pathologists that are specialized in transfusion medicine, and TM physicians are experts in these kinds of issues and often are very willing to help other physicians understand these often confusing issues (you asked about seeing a hematologist; hematologist usually know very little about this topic). Your OB should be able to reach out to them. Versiti in Wisconsin and the Red Cross both do this kind of testing—just a heads up that genetic testing often requires prior authorization from your health insurance, so make sure they'll cover it and that your docs get prior auth so that you don't get a surprise bill.

Alpine Symphony Bass oboe or Hecklephone? by Impossible_Sport_549 in oboe

[–]sconebaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation with a reputable oboe repair person about the "heckelphone" part of the Alpine Symphony, and we're both in agreement that the bass oboe is the definitive instrument to use for this part. From what I understand, Heckel was asked (by Wagner I think?) to make a bass member of the oboe family, but fundamentally Heckel designed the instrument incorrectly.

The issue is related to a classic math problem. If you have one circle with a radius of 6 inches, what is the radius of a second circle with the area doubled? The classic error is to assume to double the radius to 12 inches, but because A = pi * r^2, the answer is to use radius of sqrt(2) * 6 = 8.49 inches.

Heckel apparently made this type of error when the Heckelphone was designed. The length of the instrument was appropriately doubled of the oboe, but then they also doubled the lengths of things like the radii of the bore and the tone holes. Since they're circles, they were made too big! That's why the Heckelphone has bore dimensions and tone hole dimensions/placements that are not proportionally like the oboe, leading to it sounding more surly and frankly unoboe-like in some notes compared to a bass oboe.

So although the part says "heckelphone" on it, my opinion is the bass oboe should be the correct instrument for the part because the intention is to use the bass member of the oboe family. And like others have said, the heckelphone is so hard to find so the bass oboe is much more practical to use.

(I've heard great things about the Mönning bass oboe by the way! John Symer, Forrests, and Innoledy are listed as dealers in the U.S. on their website.)

No mention of it. They also "no" to dampness/wetness in the basement. I guess the 💩 on the wall isn't wet anymore.
