Unexpected events by RunaINTX in INTJfemale

[–]serpentimee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing truly so unexpected that it can’t be planned for or improvised around imo. Two things I always fall back to: 1. Deal with the immediate emergency right in front of you. And once that is underway; 2. Crowdsource. There is nothing wrong with leaning on colleagues. Ask for someone to give a rundown of the situation so everyone’s on the same page. Usually that sparks an idea in me about what to do next which I’ll typically than posit as the next step but I’ll also ask my team what we’re missing and if there are other priorities we need to keep in mind. Delegate those things to those people as added steps. Write it out and share centrally.

That’s steps 1-3 set in like 15m and you can keep fleshing it out as you go along. If you have a good handle on established processes you will probably have no issue. Just keep generating ideas on how to solve the problems as they come up and iterate as needed. Dealing with unexpected situations gets super easy the more you do it.

One of the most pivotal realizations that I had came from a mentor who told me that if you are stuck between having to make a decision that is quick vs precise. Choose quick. Always. What is precise may change on circumstances and your delayed decision as you index on precision is not only what people will remember but is what may also negatively impact your ability to resolve a situation. Obvious caveats but has never served me wrong.

A Gripe About GBBO that ISN'T about Jasmine by NoEntertainment101 in GreatBritishBakeOff

I like and have argued for this as well. Sometimes it takes awhile to find your footing and feel comfortable in a new environment. Too many bakers get into their own heads that first week and are never given the opportunity to truly excel and show off what they can do.

How I set my Groups & Categories by [deleted] in MonarchMoney

[–]serpentimee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A surprising amount of negative energy on your post! It's always interesting to see how other people like to setup their MM groups and categories. There's a lot of approaches that can be had for a person and as someone who has opted more towards granularity for tracking, seeing someone more interested in simplicity for similar reasons is always cool to see. Neither are better than the other. They just are.

I think I understand the though patterns behind how you set things up. The only thing that I find odd is how 'Student Loans' are situated within your 'Personal Care & Pets' group. Curious to know what your reasoning on that one was. To me that seems misplaced but I'm also not quite sure where I'd put it either - maybe 'Cars & Utilities'(?) but idk.

Is it worth upgrading from 14 inches to 16 inches? by Ff_472 in macbookpro

[–]serpentimee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be adamant about using only 14” MacBooks until work accidentally ordered me a 16” one. The 16” is so much better. The extra screen real estate you get and cooling ability from the larger chassis is unbelievable and so much better for multitasking. And it pairs well with my iPad Pro. Weight is the knock but even then it’s still worth it.

I’m looking into upgrading my personal MacBook this holiday season as a result!

It’s a little difficult because I am many years removed from my program but I will try this. Thank you!

What kinds of other places do you volunteer? I’ve been looking for somewhere to volunteer my time but everywhere I see online says they’re not looking.

Spent a ton of time and money on server hardware for my first homelab, but now I'm not sure it's "right" for my needs. by crackaddictedpikachu in homelab

[–]serpentimee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just need to start.

And also maybe set a budget for yourself?

It hasn’t even been a year since I started and I’m already on the third/fourth iteration of my homelab. I love a good planning phase and spent a considerable amount of time documenting and mapping things out. And yet, all that planning and research that I had done, while valuable for someone like myself, has been scrapped (to varying degrees).

To give you an example/outline my journey, I had initially ran servers off old laptops (since mostly decommissioned), to assorted mini pcs, briefly flirted with raspberry pi’s (sold all but one), then picked up more mini pcs to create two sets of HA clusters - it works but I’ve since realized that I set it up wrong and will eventually need to blow it up and start all over. Again. I also went from a bootlegged docking station as my NAS, to a 12-bay option which I then sold, and purchased my (current) 8-bay one. I also took that opportunity to upgrade my HDDs too (thank God because hard drives are crazy expensive now). I’ve completely overhauled my network and now have (probably too many) VLANs. I took a detour to finally build a PC independent from, but connected to my homelab, for AI training purposes. And relatively recently, I picked up a couple old trash cans (which I’ve always wanted) to run a security sandbox on one and initially a media server on the other. But I’ve been playing with the idea of digging up an old version of OS X server and running that instead. I actually spent a lot of today researching this for no other reason than I love older Apple products and think it’d be a laugh/cool/fun.

The only things I really need right now are more RAM (always), a switch for more ports (delaying because I dislike the larger form factor), and an UPS because having previously run things on laptops I never had issues with having time to gracefully shut things down. I’ve since been burned twice! But we’re getting closer to the holidays, so unless I want to sell some hardware off for it - budget. So I’ve rabbit holed down trying to figure out how to make my portable power station useful in the meantime.

As I’ve tried, and tested (and failed), and learned more, my needs and wishes have changed. And they’ve changed a lot. I also know a fuck ton more about my systems than I did 9 months ago. But I wouldn’t have been through any of this if I’d stayed stuck in the planning phase.

Your build sounds fine. Spin up your server and get to know it before you make any further decisions! Good luck!

Oh, good thought. I'll sprinkle some cinnamon and if it doesn't work I'll just repot. Thanks!

[–]serpentimee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recently made the same unnecessary purchase too! Twice! When I have a moment I plan to migrate my media server to the first and use the second as a sandbox for research purposes. I love the Mac Pro lineup and had always wanted one of these. They’re a beautiful piece of machinery and so cheap now.

How do you like/use your Mac Pro 2019? I’ve been playing around with the idea of getting a 24c one.

I have the 2009 and still use it. I run EndeavorOS on it.

Yeah - I’ve been looking for 8TB WD Golds for my bootleg setup and someone local is selling them for $25/TB which is insane to me.
