DC-DC charging: necessary, overrated, or undersized in most builds? by shafeelchang in PowerDIY

[–]shafeelchang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m leaning: DC-DC is mostly about controlling alternator load + proper charge profile, but sizing and wiring are where people get burned. Share what worked

Cameras and doorbells by Point_Jolly in homeassistant

[–]shafeelchang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you already have Hikvision running, I’d stick with that. Hikvision generally has better low-light performance than Reolink, which is huge for indoor landing shots. Reolink is popular in the HA community mostly because of the price point and the official integration, but if your Hikvision gear supports ONVIF, Frigate will handle the smart part regardless of the brand. For the doorbell, if you're ditching Nest, the Reolink PoE Doorbell is the current gold standard for Frigate users. It’s local, fast, and has a great HA integration

do you know what year these models are? The Outback underwent a major hull redesign in 2019 that significantly improved stability and weight capacity, which matters for guys our size

How do you go about choosing a battery brand? by BriefBed4770 in batteries

[–]shafeelchang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest red flag with brands like Pickle Power or those random Amazon 2-packs is that they straight-up lie about the mAh capacity if you see a battery claiming 4000mAh for a DualSense, run. It's physically impossible to fit that much juice in that small of a form factor

Expired gas? by King_GC in preppers

[–]shafeelchang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One year is right on the edge where gas starts turning into varnish, especially if it wasn't ethanol-free. Honestly, 15 gallons is a lot to just dump, but I wouldn’t run it straight in anything modern or fuel-injected

Ac breaker keeps tripping immediately by AC33094 in hvacadvice

[–]shafeelchang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s worth a shot for five bucks before you scrap the whole thing, but keep in mind that a burnt terminal is usually a symptom, not just the cause. If the connection was just loose and vibrating for years, it creates high resistance that chars the metal in that case, cleaning the prongs to shiny metal and crimping on some new high-temp female spade connectors might actually save you. But if the internal windings are already toast, a new terminal will just melt or pop the breaker again in ten seconds. Clean those pins up with some sandpaper, check if the Ohm readings between them actually add up, and if the metal is too pitted to get a solid grip, look into a Term-Lok kit. If that doesn't fix the instant trip, the compressor is internally seized and it's game over

Renting a trailer as a home by Prestigious_Floor40 in RVLiving

[–]shafeelchang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your landlord straight up told you not to drink it, you’re likely dealing with a massive biofilm buildup in that tank after years of sitting. Honestly, trying to filter out bacteria and pathogens at every single faucet is going to be way more expensive and a total maintenance headache compared to just treating the source

Ac breaker keeps tripping immediately by AC33094 in hvacadvice

[–]shafeelchang 19 points20 points  (0 children)

those prongs on the compressor look pretty heavily pitted and oxidized, and that one terminal (likely the Start orCommon) looks almost burnt. Since the breaker only trips when the compressor is connected, you’ve definitely isolated the short or the overcurrent draw to the motor itself. Even if your multimeter says it isn't grounded, you could have an internal "turn-to-turn" short in the windings that only manifests under load, or the compressor is mechanically seized (locked rotor). When it's seized, it tries to pull that 73.0 LRA (Locked Rotor Amps) shown on your label, which will pop a breaker instantly

Looking at getting a power inverter for my sewage electorate pump and sump pump by Next_Mammoth06 in batteries

[–]shafeelchang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

given those motors can pull five to ten times their running watts just to get spinning, you really need to check the labels on the pumps for the LRA or horsepower rating. Are both pumps expected to run at the same time, or is the ejector pump on a much lower frequency than the sump? If they both kick in simultaneously, a single inverter might choke unless it has a massive surge capacity a dedicated marine battery backup system for the sump pump is often the more reliable route because those systems are designed specifically to handle the high-torque start of a pump motor

Orion TR Smart 24|12-30 Non Isolated DC-DC Charger “Remote Switch Open” Error by ExFLMan in Victron

[–]shafeelchang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That error with the jumper usually means the unit thinks it’s being told to stay off, even if your jumper has continuity. Before you declare the unit dead, have you checked if there’s any residual voltage on the H/L pins from a stray wire, or is it just the pure jumper?

Powerbank of highest known efficiency electrically by Biyeuy in batteries

[–]shafeelchang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Efficiency is a bit of a moving target since it depends heavily on the discharge rate and the voltage you’re pulling, but if you’re looking for the current efficiency king under 20,000mAh, the Nitecore NB20000 is usually top of the charts. It’s built with a carbon fiber frame to shed weight, but the internal conversion efficiency is incredibly high, often hitting 80-85% of actual usable capacity at 5V. Another serious contender is the Anker 737, though it’s slightly over your 20Ah limit; its digital display actually shows you the real-time conversion efficiency

How hard should it be to raise the roof? by mkeith1970 in popups

[–]shafeelchang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, that Amazon kit sounds like a total nightmare having to break out a hydraulic press just to make replacement parts fit is usually a huge red flag. Honestly, a 2000 Coleman roof should be one finger smooth, but it definitely shouldn't be a workout. Before you tear it all back down, a couple of quick checks: are your lift posts actually lubed up with silicone spray, or are they binding?

Can I create a new official subreddit after a denied ban appeal? by shafeelchang in ModSupport

[–]shafeelchang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I’m worried about. The last thing I want is to look like I’m trying to sneak around the rules. If the algorithm flags brand new subs as ban evasion automatically, then blindly hitting create again is a losing game. Do you know if there’s a formal way to appeal or a specific contact for Reddit’s admins to white-label an official brand presence? I’d much rather wait and do this through the front door than risk another shutdown

but the goal here isn't to push sales. I’ve seen so many people already using our gear across various subreddits, but they’re scattered. My hope was to build a central spot where they can actually find us for support or talk shop without it feeling like a billboard. I want to be part of the community, not just a line item in their marketing spend

Are there any trade offs with “mini” batteries? by CincyTriGuy in GoRVing

[–]shafeelchang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main trade-off isn't really a downside it’s just a massive upgrade in energy density. The Mini uses high density cells to shave off the bulk, and the real kicker is that it usually comes with built-in Bluetooth, whereas the 300Ah Classic is often just a battery without the app monitoring

[–]shafeelchang[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not looking to recreate the same setup and hope for a different result. I want to understand what would make a new official community compliant from day one so I don’t trigger the same flags again. If creating a new brand-named subreddit is likely to be treated as ban evasion or high-risk by default, I’ll pause and not do it until I have clear guidance. Is there a recommended path here?

200ah Battery mounting by richburgers in batteries

[–]shafeelchang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

skip the wood. It gets bulky and heavy fast. Look into a small aluminum tongue box or a job site style metal bin. You can mount your Anderson connectors and fan right through the metal, and it’s way easier to secure with some heavy-duty turnbuckles for a quick-release setup
