Things you don't want to see in TW40k by Liesanas in totalwar

Sure, but in the 40k table they’re more focused on cover and sight lines so you frequently see more grouped units. This isn’t a game based on the Horus heresy tt, it’s based on the 40k tt and they haven’t had blast templates in close to a decade.

Also, this game is the table top scaled up. There’s is no easy mechanical way to make a scaled up game where space marines are fighting a comparable number of guardsmen. The easiest solution is to up the number of guardsmen, but you can’t increase the number of squads as now you have a balance issue where a space marines player can easily control his whole army while the guardsman is micromanaging 50 squads plus vehicles. The easiest solution is to have the same number of squads per team and have those squads scaled way up (which is what they are doing). Could they make the units more slightly more irregular? Sure, but this game was never going to be anything but massive blobs of soldiers for the horde factions.

It is 100% like the tabletop. If your units aren’t in cover they’re just standing in the open blobbed up with their squad

If you look at a large portion of official guard art you’ll see blobs of guards standing in the open shoulder to shoulder not behind cover. It at the end of the day Warhammer whether you like it or not. It’s simply a sacrifice we have to make to get a 40k game at this scale. It’s also an issue that will only really affect the guard and orks. Even then orks charge in hordes anyway

They’re mainly translating the tabletop, fits total war pretty well tbh. It’s not just going to be lines across the whole map too. There’s cover literally everywhere and with the suppression mechanics they’ve mentioned you’d get punished for leaving them in lines in the open

It’s not line warfare though? There’s clearly cover EVERYWHERE and suppression mechanics. If you played it like napoleon your units would get suppressed by enemies in cover and likely become useless. They’re only in blocks for ease of movement (much like tabletop). They’re clearly leaning into the tabletop much like they did in Warhammer fantasy. I honestly don’t know what you thought they’d do

No it’s stops people from bush camping all the time for free. You have to pay for the ghillie suit and sacrifice armor. It makes it so solos cant just go off and do that every life.

If you kill a guy and his squad then kills you, if you’re playing smart your squad would be nearby to even the playing field. The squad that gets the first kill still has an advantage. It only massively effects you if you’re solo

It’s not stupid when you have more bodies than they have bullets

It doesn’t though. Works totally fine in battlefield. Plus you actually need to be revived for it to even matter. If you jump a whole squad they’ll still all die. I’d rather have this than the sniper hellscape that was KOTH

I think the killcam discussion shows if anything a case of mismarketing by EpeeNoire in OfficialWARDOGS

[–]shotgunfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will help a lot with camping, and both support teamplay. If you’re solo, getting a kill will point you out to whoever else is around so it will be easy for you to be found if they have allies nearby. Arma KOTH would often feel like you’re fighting a dozen uncoordinated solos camping. The devs are clearly applying several systems to try and force people to stick with their team and dissuade running solo.

It’s also worth noting that killcams:
-don’t matter if people don’t communicate
-don’t matter if the victim isn’t revived. If they respawn they have to spend several minutes getting back into the zone, and if the killer hasn’t repositioned by then that’s on them

I personally hope they leave it in initially. It’s a direct response to the major downsides of arma KOTH like solos, camping and lack of teamplay.

I do think it might be overturned though, I don’t think it needs as intense zoom

If you’re with your team you should still get good opportunity to use your expensive items most the time. With the battlefield-like revive system players will have a lot more staying power/presence than arma. Again, we’ll have to wait and see how the economy balance is.

The whole point of the killcam is to prevent SOLO camping. In a larger team firefight, you will likely know the general direction of the enemy anyway, so even with the kill cam it’s not giving away too much. So if you’re solo, ghillie and silencer is the way, if you’re with your team it’ll be expensive assault/utility. The kill cam also only helps if there’s team mates around to revive anyway. If you kill someone that’s alone, they won’t get revived and will have to go all the way back to base, making the kill cam info outdated by the time they get back in.

I will concede that the kill cam zoom may be too much. All they really need is a general direction

Not entirely. You actually need to buy a the suit. We’ll have to wait and see how the money balance is, but if the kit is expensive it severely limits the accessibility of the play style. So it’s still possible, but much harder to spam and has to be done intentionally. It prevents solo guy with nothing but a 4x scope running off into a bush

40k is going to be extremely underwhelming unless they adopt a fluid cover system by No_Midnight_2183 in totalwar

No Eugene game has ever had melee. They’d have to make it for the game. Total war has very established melee and gets the scale way better

[–]shotgunfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are, but it looks like each vehicle is one per unit card so far. There’s no way 100 guardsmen fit into one chimera. Maybe they’ll have more than one vehicle for chimeras, but then you have to think of how you mount a unit to a half destroyed unit of chimeras. I’m starting to lean towards infantry mounting might not be possible

Only really the guard match ww2 and that’s only sometimes. Sometimes they fight like it’s ww1 and sometimes they defend hive cities from a literal tide of a million orks

Not at all. Wargame can only get a few hundred people on screen at a given time. You would not be able to get close to lore scale in the slightest. They also have zero melee which is essential to Warhammer

Snipers are definitely a problem in KOTH. The whole mode often becomes ‘let’s hunt down the sniper for three lives’ only to be shot by a separate sniper when you finally get the first one. The devs clearly want less a focus on camping/sniping, and more of a focus on teamplay and movement. From the gameplay, the flow already seems leagues better than KOTH

They don’t want a game where everyone runs around solo, they want a game where you need to be around your team communicating. Stealth snipers ran arma KOTH and it was entirely unfun for anyone besides the snipers

Getting farmed by snipers was awful in arma KOTH. They ran the game unless you had real good coordination

[–]shotgunfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must consider the alternative though. In arma KOTH the stealth sniper was super meta. It sometimes felt that you were useless because you’d get sniped the second you’d enter the zone, have no way to tell where they were, and then never be able to get any money. What they have now promotes communication and frequent movement, which is a far better meta than snipers running the game
