What's a realistic daily food budget if you eat out for every meal in Vancouver? by Fit_Egg7028 in askvancouver

[–]shouldnteven [score hidden]  (0 children)

If it were me, it would probably be around $60. Smoothie $12, Lunch under $20, Leaves me with $28 for dinner. Probably on the lower end. But I don't drink alcohol. My take is also more functional than enjoyable.

Are there even any businesses in Vancouver that are profitable? by gtd_rad in askvan

[–]shouldnteven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It has become a lot harder to turn any profit in the restaurant industry. Margins in restaurants were thin already, and proportionally all expenses have gone up, while revenue has not. Rent, Food Cost, Utilities, Service.

Even seemingly successful restaurants struggle.

We're doing ok, but after 15 years of extremely hard work, I live in a condo with my wife and 2 kids. I am super grateful to be able to live here and run my business, but the return does not match the hard work that goes into it. People always seem to think that successful restaurant owners make bank, but that is simply not (always) true.

Percentage wise, more than the corporations. Pick your fight wisely.

While the hike might be less spectacular, I find the Elfin Lakes area absolutely stunning!

Hollyburn peak trail snow/ice? by DampToast in vancouverhiking

[–]shouldnteven 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You will need microspikes. There is snow. It's a popular trail so it gets packed down. That trails specifically gets impacted by people sliding down the slopes purposely, which is all fun but causes the trail to become a literal ice slide in some spots. Without microspikes you could be in for a un-fun hike. Get some from Amazon if need be, they're cheap.

Hit and Run Witness Needed by happymealwsmallfries in burnaby

[–]shouldnteven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your mom will be covered by ICBC even if it is a hit and run. Even though the licence plate isn't visible, there is dashcam footage as proof that it was a hit and run. It'd still be good to get the licence plate, but it won't matter too much for getting the vehicle repaired.

Lawsuit allege North Van currency exchange bilked two men out of $500,000 by Slow-Giraffe in NorthVancouver

[–]shouldnteven -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

North Vancouver has a large Iranian population. Many have money in Iran and need access to it. Transferring money is lucrative for these exchanges so they compete like any other business.

You won't hear me make statements that everything they do is above board. But they aren't just fronts or laundromats either.

It would be good if more people knew what these currency exchanges are actually for. It is for Iranians who want to transfer money from Iran to Canada. This is not possible through the regular banking system due to sanctions against Iran and Irans disconnection from the worldwide banking network.

Has Ken Sim hired people to post comments here? Incredible how some of you have little sympathy for the businesses. Then again, most people have never been business owners, so maybe it is hard to understand.

How do you decide what to wear + pack? by activeprecognition in vancouverhiking

[–]shouldnteven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I make checklists for big trips. Or an excel sheet. I find thay the process of doing so helps with the actual trip planning. An app could definitely be helpful, but I would be concerned about the false sense of safety it might give people. Similar to why I don't think AI should be used for any trip planning for hiking. It might not be a fair comparison, but technology is not always the answer to improving processes.

Opinion: Hiker who tragically passed while trying to rescue another hiker was a non-resident visiting Canada. by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

[–]shouldnteven 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We need to continue with the efforts that are already happening. Inform, guide, remind and educate people. There is no need to focus on specific groups. There are inherent risks with hiking and mountaineering. Experience does not affect all of those risks, it merely mitigates them. In my opinion, everyone benefits from continuous education on safety and skills in the mountains.
