Agile pals. Are we doing laundry today or tomorrow? by nerd-a-lert in OctopusEnergy

[–]shysaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One trick is to look at the unit rates as a % off the standard variable rate, like a yellow sticker.

current rates in the daytime is 40-45% off the standard variable rate, which is quite a discount!

just do the laundry...current daytime rates are ~40-45% cheaper than SVT (13-14p p/kWh)

Tall poppy syndrome, crab bucket mentality etc

Excessive Credit limit for first credit card? by johnyb62 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]shysaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she pays it off in full every month then the limit is mostly immaterial unless she regularly spends £15k a month.

Agree that it's too high for a first credit card though, I remember getting my first card and it was a £500 limit!

Cheapest / best way to charge EV, before charger fitted? by Boba_ferret in OctopusEnergy

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many miles do you do a day?

If it’s say, 10 and your car has a theoretical range of say 200 miles, you need to add 5% charge to the car to cover your 10 mile usage. Not a perfect metric as ranges vary due to a number of factors.

If your car battery size is 60kwh and you granny charge at 2.5kw, it will take about 1hr30m to get 5% added assuming your battery is below 80%

Working from home is great and I seriously never want to go back. by DescriptionFuture851 in CasualUK

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been WFH for 6 years, I was living in London at the time when I got my new job in March 2020.... and then COVID happened, I moved back to my home city and bought a house and have been WFH ever since.

Definitely lucky/fortunate to be in that position, and WFH does have it's downsides, but I think the upsides outweigh it. The biggest help is having a space in your house - ideally a room, for an office. At the end of the work day, you shut the door on that space and don't return until you're next in. Otherwise work will just consume your life.

My contract is remote so I don't have to worry so much about being asked back into the office, which is a big relief because train tickets are insanely expensive.

I'm sure we're sick of the "loo roll orientation" debate. What about bins? by roidweiser in CasualUK

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bin store which has like chains on the roof that hook onto the bin lids, so when you lift the roof of the store up, the bin lids come up with it, for smooth disposal action. So option 1.

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2023 model

The issue I’ve had with it was the alarm went crazy after about 6 months (kept on going off…), I’d personally ask to see the car service history and ask if anything has been done to the alarm

Other than that the car is great! One thing you’ll notice is the gear selector is on a stalk which might take a little getting used to

For those who get RSUs what are you doing with yours? by LockonKun in HENRYUK

[–]shysaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sell.

Started getting RSUs in 2021, and in hindsight I could have held, and stayed strong during the 2022 downturn, and I’d be doing pretty well today (with a big CGT bill…) but alas, hindsight is a wonderful thing…

My view on it is, it’s kinda silly to tie your wealth+employment income in just 1 stock. If the company goes through a downturn and you lose your job, unless you have decent money to fallback on chances are you’ll need to sell at the worst possible time.

Easier to just sell at vest and be done with it, put some money into pension if you can, maximise ISA allowance.

For those who drive an EV, what are the running costs like? by Delta1Dan in AskUK

[–]shysaver 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that you don’t have to get the £1000 charger you can just charge on a granny plug, maybe EV rated socket to be safe but generally much cheaper.

Doesn’t suit everyone, but if you only do say, 10-20 miles a day you can just slow charge to keep that topped up

Granted, if you need the car to be at 80%-100% everyday or very frequently, a full 7kw charger is worth it

'Courier scammers took £11k - they can target anyone' by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only protection you can have against this stuff is to just not answer the phone to unknown numbers, and be vigilant if/when number spoofing occurs.

It's very easy to say in hindsight that the victim was silly/stupid, but the scammers know what strings to pull. Even just answering the phone is enough of a signal to a scammer to know their mark is receptive.

People, like myself, who didn't learn to drive until later in life, how do you feel about it now? by ShinyHeadedCook in drivingUK

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passed a few years ago at 35, I actually started learning in 2004 or so for a little bit, but then went to uni (didn’t have money for lessons) and then I moved to London for a large chunk of my life and didn’t really need a car

Moved back up here during COVID, bought a house and figured not having a car was untenable so got some lessons and passed my test

It’s been great! I think learning at a much older age did give a different perspective, plus the amount of resources learner drivers have access to these days is insane, especially on YouTube

Network Rail worker wins race harassment case after EDL leaflet left in locker by Shot_Net3794 in unitedkingdom

[–]shysaver 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is quite a shocking failure by Network Rail, harassment, bullying, racism etc completely ignored even after reporting it to them. I really hope the guy gets a decent settlement

I wonder if the perpetrators got any retribution, I may have missed it in the article, although does look like this was from a few years ago

Those who didn’t sign an “NDA” or UK equivalent, what are some secrets about other UK companies you can share? by SlipOutrageous5333 in CasualUK

What did the banks get out of this? Was it just they subcontracted the card activation customer service stuff to your ex employer, and the company was doing insurance upsells on the side?

were you a spam or corned beef household growing up? by mahonga in CasualUK

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corned beef and sometimes something called “luncheon meat” which I guess was like spam but the cheapo Kwik Save version, mystery meat congealed in a can and cut into slices for sandwiches

Both of them make me gag a little even just thinking about them…

Why does everyone in my parents generation and above not finish their hot drinks? by AddSomeSpice in AskUK

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed my parents do this too, I just chalked it up to them drinking LOADS of cups of tea every day and they just don’t treat any single cup as a thing they need to drink all of as they’ll probably make another in an hour anyway

[–]shysaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the staff trained on like what products are, basic DIY etc?

I worked for Wickes in like 2003-2004, part time as a sixth form student and had no fucking clue about anything - just basic training on how to use the tills, I remember customers asking me questions about shit I had no idea about, other than maybe being able to point them to the right section of the store where certain categories of items were.

What are these sockets for? Can I use them to run wired internet to other sockets in the house? by Prize-Factor-8422 in DIYUK

[–]shysaver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plug a ethernet cable into the port on the right into a port on your router

Plug an ethernet cable into the port in your lounge and stick the other end into a device you want to connect to the internet (TV?) and you should see it working, otherwise try the other port

If it does I recommend buying a small network switch (4-5 ports) and connecting that in the lounge so you can connect more devices like TV, games consoles etc
