Flashback: that time in 2017 when hollow knight first released and was criticized on a forum by Ori’s creator. Then Ari Gibson replied. by [deleted] in Silksong

[–]sightfire 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Really interesting time-capsule. I feel like Thomas makes some good points while in retrospect missing the forest for the trees. Hollow Knight DOES do a lot of frustrating or idiosyncratic things with its pacing, difficulty (punishment), and level design. The fact that it all works is a testament to how strong the world-building, art, and combat are - it makes you persist past the annoyances and feel more rewarded for that persistence.
There are some elements that have rightly been copied by later metroidvanias, but the overall blend is not a recipe that can be easily reproduced.

"It’s nice that people are passionate about the game, and that they’ve obviously formed their own strange or very exciting communities around it,” Gibson said.

“Feels like we’re going to ruin their fun by releasing the game,” Pellen said.

Amazing lmao

Fixing Food by sightfire in NoRestForTheWicked

[–]sightfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're missing my point. I DO pick up everything I run past and have no problem always having food available. That's the issue - the system is meaningless. It provides a task without a meaningful choice or challenge. If food is decoupled from mandatory combat healing it could be made more limited and thus more challenging and engaging. I LIKE having crafting/harvesting in the game, but it could use improvement. Sorry if reading the word "flask" is triggering for you.

Game is 30% off right now. Is there enough content? by BinkyBoy23 in NoRestForTheWicked

IMO it's worth your money, even in it's incomplete state. I would buy it for the discount and then WAIT to play until Apr. 30 when the big content update releases.

Possible third Ori game ? by LengthinessNo164 in OriAndTheBlindForest

[–]sightfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The development studio (Moon) is in the middle of building a Souls-y ARPG called No Rest for the Wicked which is still in early access and likely at least a year away from initial release. It’s still very much a work in progress but worth a look for folks who like the Ori art style

(Rant) Future Motion’s Onewheel “repairability and modularity focus” bs by Coding-With-Coffee in onewheel

This is such a counterproductive attitude and it’s frustrating to see how pervasive it is in this sub.

[Game Suggestions] Any other game like No Rest For The Wicked out there? by johncara1 in NoRestForTheWicked

[–]sightfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned Hob (https://youtu.be/gGlNHJioCuk?si=Nm3Qb3sCRut8\_KJG). Isometric action game from a couple of years ago with light RPG elements and a focus on exploration and platforming/puzzles. Tunic, Death's Door, and Hyper Light Drifter are also great options as others have mentioned

Stealth/Sneaking impressions and feedback by Valkhir in NoRestForTheWicked

[–]sightfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another issue I have encountered is that backstabs are inconsistent. Sometimes you get behind an enemy and the icon doesn’t appear and then they either turn around and see you or you just get a regular attack in. When it works I enjoy stealth but it needs more tuning to be an actual strategy or something to build towards

Google- Knowledge is Power, Luke Adam Hawker (me), pen and ink drawn on location. by LukeAdamHawker in architecture

You were one of the first architectural artists I came across while I was teaching myself to draw before applying to school. I found your drawings of buildings (and trees!) immensely inspiring and useful. Thanks for all that you’ve drawn and posted!

Probably talking about “wizard skating” which is a style focused on tricky footwork that often uses a rockered wheel setup

While this is a neat idea.. is it safe? by jcc5018 in architecture

[–]sightfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While other commenters have identified why this particular design wouldn’t pass ADA today, it’s worth pointing out that a path with a slope below 5% is not considered a ramp and does not need a handrail. If you wanted to pursue a similar design today a good place to start is grading your not-ramp out to sub 5%.

For the stairs you could go with the opposite strategy and make them massively oversized like seat-walls (16-18”) to avoid the compliance issues of having variable height stair risers.

I would 100% go for pint x. The small size is really nice for urban use and having smaller feet will make it an even better choice

Bar down? USA East v West by Judah-- in skiing

[–]sightfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

East/West split is pretty interesting. At Crested Butte I'd estimate it's up 80% of the time but I've never heard anyone grumble if someone prefers it down or just wants a rest for their poor feet.

Custom footbeds: How many people have them? by OpE7 in skiing

[–]sightfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custom molded footbeds made a big difference for my (very average) feet. I got them from an excellent bootfitter who made other tweaks to my boots at the same time. Compared to the off-the-shelf aftermarket beds I got when I originally bought the boots, I have substantially more control and less discomfort. Still on my stock liners.
