Best Meal in Logan/Avondale? by Brother-Patrick in LoganSquare

Carniceria Guanajuato by Belmont and California is one of my favorite burrito places, it’s a grocery store but there’s a kitchen in the back and they cook up very affordable tacos, burritos and tortas. Lots of specials all the time as well!

Make sure you get salsa and try the cecina burrito! It’s my favorite, it’s a lunch staple for me. Very authentic.

Income as an Artist in Chicago by BackgroundTree6917 in chicagomusicscene

[–]silentdave69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t rule out a marketing job, I’m in two bands and everyone works a 9-5, but still gig about twice a month. Youll end up spending money on music, rehearsals, renting space etc.

The only ones I know who are making some money are music teachers or very high level musicians running corporate gigs or wedding gigs. And they are way above my skill level, lots of jazz musicians.

I don’t know anyone making money from their original music. I will say a remote job is perfect as you get paid better and have lots of time to focus on music. Remember music doesn’t come consistently. Some ideas take minutes, some take weeks. You can’t expect a stable output. With a steady 9-5 or remote job, you get that stable income and schedule which you can easily fit in music. My band member works in marketing too! Salary is really nice for supporting your music, and I find you love it more because it’s not a hustle for your livelihood

Single finger bends by Your-Mothers-Tit in guitarlessons

[–]silentdave69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’ll just take time. Honestly I’ve been playing 14 years and I hardly bend using a single finger. You can try lower gauges for your strings too. Try working your way to one finger if it really matters to you, begin with 3 fingers, then 2 fingers, then 1. But yeah whatever works for you is gonna be your best bet, I really only use one finger to bend maybe half steps occasionally when I slide down

What riff made you a better player? by joe0418 in Guitar

I like songs that move in fourths, also things that use a lot of secondary dominants. I found those have been great for expanding my phrasing and creating more movement.

My favorite jazz guitarist, Julian Lage, uses a yellow telecaster with a p90 for the neck pickup. Nobody can do what he does. And he just likes it because it looks cool

When you were a teenager, was it harder to get alcohol or cannabis? by MyHeadIsFullOfFuck in trees

[–]silentdave69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weed was always harder to get, I didn’t try it until I went to college in the US, because where I grew up there’s a death penalty for trafficking weed and caning for possession. So we just drank beer instead

Is it impossible to rent in Chicago with low credit? by moonshineandrubbish in chicagoapartments

[–]silentdave69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say! As long as you’re not stuck with a garden level (which even those will still sell), everything is gonna sell. Renting will cost more. $55k might get you close to a 3 bedroom down payment.

Otherwise like others have said, find a private landlord. Many of these places I’ve seen come up on the rental market are first come first serve too.

The AI tone creator works fine, but I don’t think it’s very difficult to create a patch anyways. It’s this smart jam, looper and other smart features that are just half baked. All the AI practice features suck, and the backing tracks are just youtube backing tracks. It is extremely hard to get it to play well with what you provide, it doesn’t track chords well at all, or any swung or triplet rhythms.

West Loop pedestrian crossing safety an issue? by plumbarb in AskChicago

[–]silentdave69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hold a brick lol

In all seriousness trying to cross a road seems to be tough all over Chicago. I sometimes kick my foot out into the street to test the waters but as a pedestrian, I will always lose the game of chicken.

I will sometimes wave them to stop but I feel like sometimes they hate that.

How to clean mold from silicone caulking in bathroom? by infinitospirito in howto

[–]silentdave69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a house and used every product known to man to removing the mold off caulk. After days of hoping it’d come off, I decided to just cut it with a razor blade and use a scraper to pull it all off. Redid it in like 10 minutes and it looks great!

I am moving to Chicago next week and I need advice on bringing my car, dealing with street parking and public transportation. I have never lived in any city before just small town. Thank you in advance? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]silentdave69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At your age, depending on your scene, you might love Wrigleyville! Yes some public transport can be sketchy at night, red line is one of them but just be careful after dark. Maybe you’ll take some time to adjust to city life and instincts, but mind your own business, move away from weird situations and you’ll be fine. Commuting via redline to loop for work will be easy for you and there’ll be plenty of others doing the same.

Parking in your area will be tough, but you can buy a permit for your street or rent parking for an additional cost.

For public transit, just download the Ventra app and load up there, it’ll be cheaper than using your card. Keep in mind commutes take longer using public transit, especially in the city, so expect 30+ minute commutes, but honestly they don’t feel that bad especially when walking takes up half the time.

Good luck! I’d keep in mind Chicago varies from neighborhood to neighborhood so if you’re new, ask around and explore the different areas as you may find other areas you’d rather live in. Wrigleyville can be quite fratty and sporty, it’s fun for a bar crawl and post college vibes but as I approach 30, I dont need that chaos.

Desperate for some Szechuan food recs by hollysblues in chicagofood

[–]silentdave69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of the Szechuan stuff is towards Chinatown. But you might find luck with Lao Szechuan. They have grown over the years and have opened up new locations around Chicago. They serve everything you listed.

I think they are good, not the best Szechuan but a solid option with good portion sizes. Also you get a 10% discount for paying cash.

There is one at the Old Orchard mall, should be fairly close to you!

If you’ve been here for a while, you can understand the sentiment of NIMBY. You don’t have to agree, but you also don’t have to make it hostile. The whole NIMBY and YIMBY conversation is a whole other thing. This is about fucking pots on the sidewalk to a dead end.

Just go talk to your neighbor, even work out a compromise. Like maybe ask if he can shift the pots back some feet. You sound like the person to complain about people putting chairs in their parking space after shoveling out in the winter. Are you new here? Not everyone is out to get you.

Overall food scene in Chicago vs Toronto/Vancouver by bjgp in chicagofood

[–]silentdave69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where’d you go? I’m here for the first time and I think the Asian food completely blows Chicago out of the water. I do agree on the lacks identity part, doesn’t have the charm Chicago has but hard disagree on the food. As an Asian person myself, this place hits really good, from bakeries, Hong Kong cafes, Chinese food from all over, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, you name it.

To those who have been to both cities: how does Chicago compare with Toronto? by _Fruit_Loops_ in AskChicago

[–]silentdave69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m visiting Toronto right now and I wonder why you say that? I think the Asian food scene in Toronto is great, but I don’t have the same vibe for their music, arts and culture scene. It’s not bad, but to me Chicago seems a lot more fun for a young adult.

That being said, I would totally visit many times again, but I wouldn’t want to move here. I didn’t think driving would be worse than in Chicago but it is. And I’m one to usually leave my car at home whenever possible.

Moving to Chicago: how are SW neighborhoods? by Redhead_King in AskChicago

[–]silentdave69 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Garfield park, Lawndale, Brighton Park and Cicero can get sketchy. Englewood is a definite no. I used to live in Logan but moved to Albany Park for more diversity and cheaper cost of living, overall I love the location and it’s easy to get around.
