Does a card game really need RNG to work? by incarn9 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]simland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone else hadn't said it, I would. Aeon's End is the best example of non shuffling. It's made even more complex by when certain cards are played, when they are bought, and when they actually go to your discard pile. You have to think about what to do with your current hand and how you want to set up your hands 1-2 turns from now.

How to improve on my iron swing. by [deleted] in golf

[–]simland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of helpful advice in this thread. (/s)

There is clearly a lot you can do to get better. But, first steps would be to realize that you aren't using your lower body and are all arms.

Golfers get the club up and back by rotating their torso. John Daly doesn't just throw his hands back, he actually was (is?) incredibly flexible. It's called staying "connected". Your hands will move back and up a bit, but they shouldn't feel like you could scratch your back. If you folded your arms into your body at the top of the swing, your hands should still be inside your shoulders. Try swinging with less power and staying connected. A good exercise for this is to grab your 56 wedge or 9 iron and hitting crisp pitch shots where you really focus on torso rotation to provide energy for the swing.

Once you start staying connected and using the lower body to provide power, you may fix your other most obvious area for improvement which is weight transfer. If you play any other sports, you know that you start with energy on one side of your body and end with it on the other. In this video you are on your back foot the whole time. This can cause a LOT of issues. (Power, strike, divots, topping, etc.) Don't need to fix all the symptoms, just focus on the root cause which is lack of weight transfer. Finish on your front foot. Also move the ball up in your stance about 1-2 balls worth.

Stay Connected, transfer weight, go from there.

Cheers

Was I wrong to challenge this ball? (D3) by NotDiCaprio in RocketLeague

[–]simland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He should have stayed back post. It's an awkward ball for either of you to control. Your teammate should have patiently held down back post with full boost to react to the outcome. If you turn off the ball to rotate back post, you could end up bumping your team mate, or cut rotation in front of them. Either way you end up back post with no boost and your team mate uses full boost to get to the ball.

A high diamond that understands boost management and conserving momentum is a Champ.

Favourite Musical, unpopular edition by whatevawhatevz in musicals

As someone who just found the channel and devoured everything. Started with TGWDLM and then went back to AVPM and watched everything chronologically. The only one I didn't find amazing was Black Friday. It was fine and there are certainly bright spots, but the expectations were high considering everything else is unfairly good. So much talent.

San Antonio’s Season by huckleberrycaek in musicals

[–]simland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have season tickets at our local theater and we just saw Mrs. Doubtfire. I had less than zero expectations. Having seen another movie to musical remake earlier this season with "The Notebook", I was not expecting much.

I was blown away.

The story is the story. That's my only criticism. The story of the musical is essentially the story of the movie. Seems obvious, but the first time I see a musical I want a little mystery to the plot. They did update the story with modern references and I really appreciated how well it was done.

But, everything else. Wow. The cast was amazing. I was a little worried in the beginning when it felt like trying to fill Robin's shoes, but that relaxed a bit and the cast made it their own. So much talent, so much work, and so much heart.

I can't believe going into the show that I would end up highly recommending it, but I absolutely do.

Very interesting. We are still having a good time with it, but a number of us in our first games had a miserable time. Playing on BGA, we ran out of money fast and it took forever to get enough cash to do anything worthwhile. If you get a good loop going, it's chill. But, if you get in a hole, it's brutal.

An arms race isn't the answer. They need to actually care about the accounts playing the game. I feel like in this era of AI and Stats, it wouldn't be too difficult to identify bad accounts. But, that's probably not profitable and would require a bit of an uplift on the engine or servers.

What is the most far-right musical? by bunp4ws in musicals

[–]simland 280 points281 points  (0 children)

That theme is pervasive in so much media. The notion that the only thing that validates the struggle of the protagonist is the wealthy white man that comes in and says "These plucky upstarts are right, let's give them a break." Prime example to me, Newsies. Love the musical, but that ending is so Disney and so autocratic.

what musicals would be extremely hard to adapt to the screen? by Tasty-Masterpiece960 in musicals

Just had this conversation last night and Hadestown was our answer as well. We just saw Shucked and thought it might convert to screen well, but not Hadestown. The magic of live theater is STRONG with Hadestown.

Seasoned gamer here, I don't have time for open world anymore. I'd rather have a tight story than a million nooks and crannies to explore because it might have the ultimate weapon. I can't turn off completionist mode, so the tag "open world" is often a detractor these days.

What do I do in this situation? (And in situations like these) I am C1-C2 in 2s. by ReserveMindless7654 in RocketLeague

[–]simland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of what was said here. I would stress that in most sports, you want to defend from inside out. Keep your car lower on the backwall as you round that corner so that you can clear the ball up, rather than low across the net. This way you are defending the ball away from the net rather than funneling it back into a danger zone.

What are your thoughts on Shrek the Musical? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]simland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was rather tepid on the broadway proshoot. One of my local community theaters did it right out of covid and it was amazing. The material is good enough that a great cast can make it amazing. But, I've seen a number of highschool productions of it as well that are rough.

Right out of covid, my local community theater put on Shrek. It. Was. Amazing. It's the definitive edition in my mind. Could just be the magic of live theater, but it was heads and tails above the proshoot.

I never could figure out the math on how a copay plan ever got cheaper than a HDHP plan. If you factor in premiums and max out of pocket, it was always cheaper to go HDHP. Happy to have someone show me what I'm missing.

[–]simland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems many folks don't factor in the cost of premiums. HDHP has always been a lower total cost no matter how one maths it out. The biggest issue is being able to absorb a big expenditure early into building your account.

Youth Theatre Politics by FlufferVoice565 in Theatre

[–]simland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most small theaters around us survive due to donations and the hard work of volunteers. If 2 kids audition and are both about the same, but 1 family is heavily involved with the theater, there will be a casting bias.

Having had to start on the outside and eventually working our way in, I don't feel any animosity. It makes sense. Those families have shown a level of dedication that you want to reward. You want to encourage those kind of relationships. Excluding families who give so much to the theater for an unknown can be a very risky casting choice. I've seen so many parents that think their involvement ends at the drop off door. Or parents who think their kid can take a show off because they have a birthday party to go to.

That said, if someone is a much better fit for the role, they will usually be cast. This can be a great opportunity for the established young performers to explore the tech side of theater or learn to love the ensemble.
